Casey Anthony Trial: Caylee Anthony's Grandmother Tells Jury Daughter's Car 'Smelled Pretty Bad' (VIDEO)

Casey Anthony's 52-year-old mother broke down in tears on the witness stand Tuesday as she testified about the foul smell in her daughter's vehicle during the sixth day of her 25-year-old daughter’s trial for the first-degree murder of her daughter, two-year-old Caylee Anthony.

"Casey's purse was on the front seat and Caylee's baby doll, her favorite doll, was in the car seat like it was sitting where Caylee would have sat," Cindy Anthony said, describing the interior of her daughter's Pontiac Sunfire after it was picked up from an Orlando towing company.

"Caylee's doll smelled like the car so I took it out," Anthony continued. "I sat the doll down and I went and got a Clorox wipe and I wiped the face and hands. The body was soft and so it smelled pretty bad ... I sprayed Febreze all through the car thinking that might help the odor ... I used pretty much a whole can of Febreze."

Cindy Anthony was called to the stand by state prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick. The veteran district attorney played several 911 calls for the jury while Anthony was on the stand, including the now infamous call Cindy Anthony placed on July 15, 2008, after being told by her daughter that Caylee had been missing for 31 days.

"There's something wrong. I found my daughter's car today, and it smells like there has been a dead body in the car," Cindy Anthony told the dispatcher.

Anthony, a nurse, testified that she is familiar with the smell of human decomposition and said that the odor in the car "was like something I had never -- it was pretty strong," she said.

A tearful Cindy Anthony became so shaken during her testimony that she had to be escorted out of the courtroom by a deputy sheriff so that she could compose herself.

The jury also heard a recording of a call Casey Anthony made to her parents from the Orange County Jail on July 16, 2008. During the call, Anthony can be heard complaining that her mother did not defend her when she appeared on television with a local news station.

"Nobody in my own family is on my side. They just want Caylee back, that’s all they’re worried about right now," Casey Anthony said.

During cross examination by Casey Anthony's defense attorney, Jose Baez, Cindy Anthony described her daughter as a "very loving, very caring mother," and said that she never saw her mistreat Caylee.

Last week, Baez told the jury Caylee died on June 16, 2008, when she drowned in her family's swimming pool. He also alleged that Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, was the one who found his granddaughter's body. George Anthony has since denied the allegation.

The only other witness called to the stand Tuesday was Casey Anthony's former friend, Amy Huizenga.

Huizenga said she and Anthony met at the end of 2007 and became "very close friends." She described the relationship between Anthony and her mother as turbulent and said that Casey Anthony had once described her mom as crazy.

"It was hard. Her mom was continually agitated with her," Huizenga said. "I remember she told me her mom had told her she was an unfit mother. She was extremely upset about that."

Huizenga also testified about a text she received from Casey Anthony on June 27, 2008, in which she mentioned having car trouble and complained about a dead animal being stuck under her car, causing a bad odor.

Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. If convicted, she could face the death penalty.

The trial continues Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.

The testimony of the first cop to interview Casey Anthony -- who said he didn't smell the terrible odor coming from the car -- teaches us something of great importance: there are times when 10 people may notice something while one person doesn't. The failure of one person to see, hear or smell something doesn't mean that thing wasn't there. It's pretty clear that there was a horrible smell like rotten flesh in the car. Even though some witnesses have reasons to not want to say it was corpse-like, we still get the general idea very convincingly. One person whose contrasting view on something that was so clear to many people does not cast a reasonable doubt on that piece of evidence. There will NEVER be a case in which every single witnesses agrees on every single detail. Here, we see that a person can miss something that others noticed. Maybe this cop is embarrassed over how he didn't report the odor, didn't include it in his written report. Maybe his superiors told him to say he didn't smell anything...so the public wouldn't think the local police ignore things anyone can tell are important. I find this moment in the trial very instructive.

His superiors wouldn't tell him to say he didn't smell anything, because that would be to encourage perjury.

I just read about 12-15 pages of jailhouse letters Casey wrote to a friend (Robyn someone...). Couple of observations:

1. She doesn't write in cursive, but in a consistent, slanted print. She frequently decorated the words and letters with hearts, squiggly lines, flowers, etc. Struck me as immature; what one would expect from a pre-teen girl, passing notes in class.

2. She talks mostly about HERSELF. There are passing references to the friend's issues, her family, and "Cays" (her nickname for Caylee) but the vast majority of subject matter is HER. Her taste in music, what food she likes, tv shows, her hair color, her weight, her boyfriends, over and over again. This also struck me as odd. If this were me, and I were engaged in jailhouse correspondence, I would writing solely about my case. The details, what happened, the investigation, in as minute detail as possible. Not the case here. She writes as if she is away at summer camp, instead of facing the death penalty for the brutal murder of her only childhood.

3. She makes frequent references to God, surrendering to God, support from God, being saved by God. Comes off like a born-again Xtian.

The letters are unsettling. Casey is very often joking and silly...def. NOT depressed or sad very often. She admits to feeling 'super high energy'...'on a sugar high' ...'unable to nap or sleep.' Is this normal?

Not relevant? Take a look at the number of comments of ANY thread regarding Palin and you libs go CRAZY. Thousands of hits. Bush not relevant? You clueless libs still blame everything on Bush. Typical ztupid lib.

Here is my theory: Casey was getting a lot of heat from her family for her lifestyle and use of them as babysitters so she can party. She uses xzanex to drug her daughter so that she will sleep in the trunk of the car while she visits the clubs. She overdoses the child and comes back to the car to find her daughter dead. She doesn't know what to do, is in a state of denial about the body being in her car and just tries to forget about it. Fluid starts to leak from the nose and mouth so she tapes the orifices. She finally buries the body, then concocts the story about the babysitter.

Could very well be. I thought that she used the trunk as a babysitter and used chloroform to put her to sleep and duct tape to keep her from crying or screaming when she woke up so nobody would know she was in there, but your theory makes a lot of sense, also.
05:45 PM on 06/01/2011
Why would she wrap duct tape into the HAIR of a living child? That would be a real hassle (and very painful) to remove later.

It is so disturbing to see such cases. If you watch Casey you see behavior that is inconsistent with motherly, remorseful (even if it was an accident there would be remorse) behavior. What you see is someone who doesn't have normal feelings. It is very similar to Scott Peterson. It wouldn't surprise me if Casey is a sociopath. She is very good at manipulating people. She managed to keep people at bay for 31 days. That takes some serious dissipative skills. She was able to pretend for 31 days that nothing was wrong.

I feel sorry for her parents. I've seen interviews with them and they really want to believe Casey. They want to defend her but the facts reveal the truth and I bet they are just in so much pain. Now Casey is trying to blame them for her behavior. It's so sad. I really feel for the parents.

This is such a tragedy. At one point while watching the trial on TV, I lost track of the players. This whole Nanny Zanny back story is too bizarre. Crazy thing is Zanny doesn't seem to exist in any one's world but Casey.

the police did investigate all possible zeneida gonzales in florida
one had her house broken into and things stolen
another had a number of traffic violations with no driver's licence.
then of course there is the one who claims her life was ruined by the accusations.
i think casey used the alias zeneida gonzales when she didn't want to identify herself. eg she just got pulled over by the cops for speeding
further a boyfriend (jessie) father created the nickname zanny the nanny so no, this is just a coincidence about xanax and zanny
i have to wonder about how concerned cindy really was about caylee since in 2 years she never met zanny, got her phone number, wanted to tell zanny if there was an emergency when she was looking after caylee to call her or considering cindy had little confidence in casey' ability to mother why would she trust casey's ability to choose an appropriate babysitter.

From the beginning, Jose Baez has been a joke attorney. I am beginning to believe that he knows Casey will be found guilty...and her appeal will be based on "inadequate defense."

As dysfunctional as this family seems to be (and has been), I truly don't believe there is any other explanation for what happened to Caylee. Casey got rid of her, she was in the way of her partying life.

I have been asking myself a couple of questions that I hope will be answered during the course of this trial......(1) if Casey was not working at Universal or Sports Authority for the last 2 years (2007-2008) what was she doing all day (2) how did she make money to support Caylee (even though George and Cindy paid the house expenses, Casey still had money for gas (well not the few times she kept running out of gas),(3) how was it that NO ONE saw or knew this "nanny" that Caylee was supposedly with all day for 2 years ???? So many questions linger.

Casey was at Anthony Lazzaros place between classes. They said she was cooking and doing laundry. Then it came out that her grandparents financially supported Caylee. Then it came out that she stole a friends checkbook and purchased items. Then she would get gas from her dad shed to fill her tank or she would call her firends when she ran out of gas on the road. But I guess that the family never questioned her Zanny or requested her numbe ror asked to meet her cause according to her fmaily they just trusted that she knew what she was doing and had no reason to believe casey was lying about Zanny's existence
06:47 PM on 06/01/2011
This dude has had almost three years to build his case. He gets no sympathy from me and "inadequate defense" shouldn't even be considered.

As far as money, don't forget that Casey was stealing from her parents, her grandparents and her friends. And probably other people that we don't even know about. Also, she told her parents that Zanny (Zani?) was friends with Jeff Hopkins, whom she worked with at Universal. And, of course, she lied. She misled her parents. She constantly had excuses for them about everything.
08:48 AM on 06/01/2011
This happened a couple years ago and Casey has been in jail for quite awhile. If her father was involved don't you think she would have been yelling and screaming to the police about this? I really do feel sorry for the parents.

Not only that, but forensics would have implicated him much earlier than than an accusation right at trial time. This is just the defense trying to distract the jury. How her lawyer can keep a straight face while pushing this lie is beyond me.
06:06 PM on 06/01/2011
Exactly. Even if she was trying to cover up an accident, why didn't she start telling the truth the moment she was charged with murder? Seems like that's what any normal (and innocent) person would do.

I went to visit my sister once and an elderly man was found dead in his house after no one had seen him for three days. It was in the summer time .

My sister lived six house down and believe me, that was a smell that I will never forget.

Human decomposition is unlike any other odor and that odor lingers for quite a while.

I had to go back home because, I couldn't take the smell which settle around the whole neighborhood.
