Coachella 2012 is branching out over two weekends next year, but that doesn't mean fans are in for an epic 10-day music festival. Instead, the weekend event is simply going to be staged twice; once during April 13-15, and the second during April 20-22.
Here's how the event organizers at Goldenvoice explain it:
In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, COACHELLA 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends. We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.
It's been less than two months since Coachella 2011 wrapped, but tickets for 2012 (which remain at $269 plus fees for the whole weekend) are going on sale later this week. The frenzy will start Friday, June 3rd at 10am PST and end Friday, June 10th at 10pm PST.
Tickets for Coachella 2011 sold out in less than a week when they first went on the market in January of this year, something that surprised Goldenvoice head Paul Tollett. "We maybe would have made the tickets nontransferable" if he could have foreseen the speed at which they sold out, he told the LA Times.Because of how quickly the event sold out, counterfeit tickets or huge markups on scalped passes were a big problem in the months leading up to Coachella 2011. Coachella's organizers acknowledge this in their statement as well:
We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.
The lineup for Coachella 2012 still hasn't been announced. In the past, tickets have gone on sale alongside the music stage schedule.
