FreedomWorks Gives Freshman Republicans Tips For Dealing With Medicare At Town Halls

WASHINGTON -- The conservative group FreedomWorks has a message for freshman Republicans in Congress: Do not shy away from the Medicare fight.

On May 24, the group run by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey convened one of its regular off-the-record meetings with "communicators from limited-government conservative offices in the House and Senate who have a close relationship with the grassroots," according to an email from FreedomWorks' Media Coordinator Jackie Bodnar obtained by The Huffington Post. The email was intended for attendees of the breakfast meeting.

The main topics of discussion, according to notes attached to the email that recapped the meeting, were the debt ceiling and Medicare. The special guest that day was Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), who argued, according to the recap, that the "debt ceiling has become a key bargaining chip that can be used to get the BBA [balanced budget amendment] passed."

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, focused on Medicare and gave the congressional offices tips for dealing with the hot topic in their districts (emphasis added):

  • Get out there and talk to people. Hold town halls at senior centers and other areas where the population is especially concerned about their benefits being cut. Take the lessons of ’94 and ’95 and get out there and explain to people that their immediate benefits will not be affected. Explaining the plan will offset confusion and the Democrats’ negative messaging.
  • We need to dispel the myth that if we leave Medicare alone it will stay the same. It won’t. By reforming them we are saving and strengthening these programs for the current and future generations.
  • Don’t bury your head in the sand. Republicans must not shy away from this issue. Expect Democrats to attack, but not fighting back will only makes it worse. BOLD action is needed.
  • Communicate that Democrats do not have a plan of their own. Hold up a blank piece of paper as a powerful image of their do-nothing approach.
  • Stick to your message.

FreedomWorks spokesman Adam Brandon told The Huffington Post that the main audience for these meetings is communications staffers who work for small-government, conservative, freshman Republicans.

"This is a very important class, and it's very delicate," said Brandon. "This class owes its office to this grassroots movement. They don't owe it to any institution in D.C., and they don't owe it to the party leadership. So as the political process continues, they're going to be put under special pressure. That's why we started getting this together, as a place to exchange ideas."

According to the Associated Press, freshman Republicans have been trading tips on how to manage or avoid tough town hall situations, including the best strategies for defending their vote for Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) controversial budget plan.

Ryan's proposal to turn the current Medicare program into a voucher system has caused Republicans considerable headaches in recent weeks, both within their own party and with constituents.

Democrat Kathy Hochul recently beat Republican Jane Corwin in the NY-26 congressional election, a race in a heavily conservative district that focused on the GOP plan to change Medicare. FreedomWorks' political action committee was invested in the race, airing ads hitting Independent candidate Jack Davis, who was touting himself as the tea party candidate in the campaign.

"With Medicare, when you get into a policy battle, you launch your position," explained Brandon. "The other side pushes back, and you have to push back again. It goes back and forth, back and forth. Often in that first push back, people get scared and run, try and switch the tone to 'let's talk about gas prices,' or something like that. While energy prices are a critical issue, we're in this debate on Medicare, and we're going to have it, and we're going to make sure that the GOP has that debate."

Also at the May 24 meeting, Dean Clancy, FreedomWorks' legislative counsel, discussed the debt ceiling and said the key point for congressional offices was that the "world does not end if the debt ceiling is not raised," according to the notes distributed after the meeting.

"The Democrats' communication strategy is to scare people into thinking that Republicans are going to cut grandma's benefits," read the summary of Clancy's remarks. "We must communicate the truth that if spending is allowed to continue, our children and grandchildren will have no benefits, and grandma is likely to suffer too. We need to take this battle to the states where activists have a focal point to rally around as we head into the 2012 elections."

In addition to its regular meetings, FreedomWorks will also be bringing in more than 100 tea party activists from around the country to Washington, D.C. from June 24-27 for a "comprehensive activist training boot camp."

In the summer of 2009, FreedomWorks was one of several tea party groups active in rallying conservatives to pack Democratic town halls and object to their health care reform plans.

Brandon predicted that the town halls that lawmakers will hold in their districts this August will be worth watching.

"I would expect the August town halls to be the ones that get pretty exciting, in the sense where you're going to have more turnout, and that's mainly because the folks on our side got used to the August town halls," he said. "There's more publicity, they're easier to find. ... The real story on the town halls will be in August."

I'd love for some people at the Town Hall Meetings to bring up what I read in an article by David Sirota called "Fears of a Corporate Police State" that everyone should read. So many of us have posted comments related to corporate takeover but this spells out what is happening across the country in state legislatures.

My thoughts are, Nothing is Free. Do we want to keep Medicare/Medicaid/Soc Sec..ok then, we need REVENUE. Taxes generate REVENUE. A National Medicare Tax. 1 cent on everything you buy. Maybe a $5 donation when you do your income tax. (although some dont pay taxes, they do buy things). Dont know if that would work, but we need suggestions. We're smart, come up with some ideas. The Republicans want our hands tied with NO NEW TAXES. Everybody likes the sound of that but then we lose exactly what we are fighting for. Taxes = Revenue = Medicare/Medicaid/Soc Sec. Think of a solution beside killing them.....

how about raising taxes on the rich, closing tax loopholes on the corporations that dont pay any taxes in spite of their huge profits, stop subsidizing oil, and coal companies, and spending money on other countries, cut back in defense, and if corporationsthat do business here send jobs abroad, they should have to pay more penality taxes; and give credits instead for those who keep jobs in the USA. There is abundant ways to fix the deficit that would not be on the backs of the poor or the elderly or children or women, or the average person!
The GOP plan is outrageously deceptive, disgusting and unfair to the american people, and if they manage to sell it to the american people, then they(the american people) are really stupid and deserve it.

They have foolishly underestimated the popularity of Medicare, and the people who depend on it. Grandma and Grandpa won't be impressed or swayed with their attempts at misdirection. The voucher program is ridiculous, impossible and benefits only the insurance companies. Voters will remember that all House Republican's (except four) voted for the Ryan budget.

I see. Listen to your tea party parents and grandparents -- when they said they were acting the way they do because they didn't want the burden of the debt to fall on you, they were kidding -- they are really plotting to make sure it does not fall on them.

Dick Armey--it is like he could not make it as elected representative of the people so he became a hired gunslinger instead. I guess this job has no expectations of truth.
He started the lies about death panels and now lies about no medicare no problem. Isn't he the same one who told seniors that health care reform was taking away their medicare when it wasn't Does anyone other than his hired help still believe him?

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' wife reportedly worked for Dick Armey when she was younger. As she ramps up her tea party activities, it's pretty clear that she still believes him.

"Communicate that Democrats do not have a plan of their own. Hold up a blank piece of paper as a powerful image of their do-nothing approach."

Democrats do have a plan, it's called Medicare. Yes, it may need to be reformed, but vouchers are not the way. You're going to give $15,000 voucher to a person 56 years old with all kinds of medical problems and what expect a for profit insurance company to cover them. HA! That's insane, asinine, sophomoric, ridiculous!

If you ask me I think healthcare should be left to "we the people," and that means our government. Not some corporation trying to make more profits for a greedy board of directors or greedy investors who could care less if we live or die, they care about making more money or being more cost efficient. Which means cutting corners on care, we have already paid into the system.

Vouchers are crap!

"Hold up a blank piece of paper as a powerful image of their do-nothing approach."

LOL. And who's supposed to fall for that? Are they really thinking that people have forgotten about Health Care Reform last year which will extend the life of Medicare to 2030?

Pathetic

Unfortunately much of the general population does indeed have that short of a memory when it comes to legislation. Or politics. Or health care.

It is a sad commentary when a class on how to lie to the voters must be taken. Do they give a certificate at the end of the class, or is it an actual degree?
05:04 PM on 06/02/2011
Silly, Jillian. Degrees are for Liberals! :)

So, it is a certificate program...LOL!

It's getting to the point that these GOP bagger fascists feel that the average tax paying American is a burden to the country. Maybe its time to remind them they are not in control?

and they are only 1% of the population and we are the rest, if we mobilize and stay informed , we should be able to reverse their trend, by not voting Republican at all !
The problem is voters are misinformed duped and lied to and dont bother to check the facts for themselves and then like sheep vote republican and fall to the slaughter!
Dont be too lazy to check facts,,,,not with Fox news or any of their propaganda, not even talk shows on tv, but I reccoment reading experts like Jonathan Cohn, Paul Krugman, Ezra Klein, Matthew Iglesias, for they are not "bought" politicians but serious experts on these subjects and the only few, ones that can be trusted to know the bottom line of what these issues really mean for us, the people. Stay informed with facts not lies.
12:29 PM on 06/02/2011
Staying informed is the best way to deflect the fear and hate the GOP has been running on.

Dick Armey should not have the kind of control he has over the elected Republican party. This is disturbing to me and it should be to most Americans. Dick Armey does not hold an elected office, yet he is crafting legislation and forcing Republicans to try and pass that legislation.

of course! They pay him to do their bidding. These changes will be very bad dfor people and seniors but great for for profit insurance companies! Do you like how insurance companies gouge you and treat you? Well then dont vote republican or else thats what you will be looking forward too, uncontrollable HC costs. Medicare is the only reason it was affordable ...so dont fall for their lies. They dont care, they, politicians, have free medicare for life themselves for life! So they can screw you and collect the benefits from the insurance companies! get it ?

An American-Canadian psychology prof spend years observing and surveying people to work that out. It's got to do partly with living in tightly-knit communities and congregations that become right-wing echo chambers and partly with fundamentalist religions that train people to believe rather than think.
