Violent Thunderstorms in Montpelier, Vt., Carve Out Giant Sinkhole (PHOTOS)

Intense thunderstorms wreaked havoc in the Northeast over the weekend, ripping up streets, flooding neighborhoods and forcing schools to close.

In Montpelier, Vt., this amazing photo was taken Friday outside the Buy Right Auto. That day, 150 residents in Barre, Montpelier and Berlin spent the night at three local shelters, according to the Associated Press.

Montpelier got 3.89 inches of rain Friday. Plainfield, a town east, got 5.22 inches.

Sinkholes indeed can be quite large -- and quite dangerous.

On Sunday, in Morganton, N.C., a teenager found himself three-feet under while playing soccer at the Catawba Meadows Soccer Complex.

But this two-foot-wide ditch was nothing compared to the 200-foot deep gaping sinkhole in Guatemala that swallowed an entire three-story building in 2010.

"A lot of us who study sinkholes look at this and go, 'wow,' it does seem a little bit bizarre," Randall C. Orndorff, a program coordinator with the U.S. Geological Survey, told ABC News.
