'Tim Burton' Exhibition Opens At LACMA

First Posted: 05/31/11 07:09 PM ET   Updated: 07/31/11 06:12 AM ET

This weekend the "Tim Burton" exhibit opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Previously at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the exhibit's Los Angeles opening was a star studded event including Winona Ryder, Slash, Danny Elfman and Burton himself. The exhibit is quite large, and serves as a retrospective on Burton's career.

Comprised of some 700 hundred objects, the pieces show range from drawings to mobiles. The works give an idea of who Tim Burton was before he became the well-known movie director he is today, including sketches from his time as an artist and his stint as a Disney animator. There are numerous sketches that chronicle Burton's feelings on loneliness and alienation while growing up in Southern California.

Tim Burton fans will rejoice at being able to see props and sketches from all his works, both obscure and well-known. The exhibition also shows Burton's wide-ranging influences from Hieronymus Bosch to German Expressionism. Currently, Burton is working on feature film versions of "Frankenweenie" and "Dark Shadows," the latter staring his frequent collaborator Johnny Depp in the lead role.

"Tim Burton" will be on view through October 31st, though LACMA is closed on Wednesdays.

I think there's something offensive about a billionaire doing "alternative art"--the kind of thing that's been around since the '70s. Also, don't you wonder who actually made these things? Surely not Burton, but rather an army of assistants. But then again, I don't think his movies are very good either

If it gets more people to the museum, then that's a good thing. Not a fan of Burton's work. I'll leave it at that.

This guy is a confirmed lunatic. It shows in his art. It shows in his movies. I have, and always will see everything he does. I can't wait to see this show.

Slide 33: "General view of atmosphere at the opening party for Tim Burton at LACMA on May 28, 2011 in Los Angeles, California." ... and it shows a completely empty room with the gaping mouth, as though the whole crowd have just been devoured!

If that isn't a Burton-esque mistake of captioning, I don't know what is.

I saw this show when it was on in MOMA and it was AMAZING. If you're anywhere near there, don't miss it. Do, however, wait til the initial rush dies down - it was unbearably packed in NYC. It's very hard to mooch over and back to the artworks when there's a mob of people shuffling around you on all sides.

And....it reallly helps if you are a 'member' of the museum...that way, you get up extra close to the videos that can't be understood unless you are really close. This is a good reason to join the museum. Like Silverwing mentioned...this exhibit 'is AMAZING.'

A word to the haters: I think the man has done a great deal of very good work (Pee Wee, Scissorshands, Wood, Batman, etc.) that the sniping is inappropriate.

No matter where you go, no matter what you do , there will ALWAYS be awful remarks...
Gandhi, Mother Teresa were not immune from it either. It is a sad and horrible fact that a number of people will always transfer the misery within them toward wonderful things that people do.
They have the insatiable need to attempt to tear things down in order to feel better about the darkness they reside in. Feel fortunate that we are not one of THOSE people.
How awful it must be to be so hateful, thank goodness I will never know...

"Currently, Burton is working on feature film versions of 'Frankenweenie' and 'Dark Shadows,' the latter staring his frequent collaborator Johnny Depp in the lead role."

Tim Burton is doing a hack remake of a preexisting franchise starring Johnny Depp? Who could have guessed!?!?!?

Hacks.

No, I am not a fan. Burton takes established franchises and then remakes them through the filter of a bad acid trip. This isn't genius. This is formulaic nonsense.

seems to really like working with the same folks, like depp. wasn't so sure of that in alice in wonderland. maybe an idiosyncrasy.
