Running is a great way to stay in shape, meet people and compete. Everyone should sign up for a race, even a 5k, just to have a deadline in front of them. And after they finish said running event they should check out www.myracesticker.com for custom running stickers.

Constant running will damage the knee joints over time. Pick a different sport to stay in shape.

Only because we run with highly unnatural form. The human heel was never meant to strike the ground. A forefoot landing provides more cushioning than any shoe ever made. :-)

I can never understand why, when given the choice, anyone would choose running over bicycling.

On a bicycle, the saddle, seat post, and seat tube support your upper body weight and the pedals prevent your foot from striking the ground. There is very little stress on the knee.

As a bonus you can exercise much longer without fatigue.

Depending on your heart rate, cadence, and wattage, you can burn anywhere from 400 to 1000 calories per hour on a bike ride, covering around 20 miles.

I know many cyclists in their 50's that were once runners who were forced to give it up because of knee injuries. They all seem to really enjoy bicycling and wish they had taken it up earlier.
