Severity Of Europe E. Coli Outbreak Stuns Experts

DAVID RISING and MARIA CHENG   05/31/11 07:28 PM ET   AP

BERLIN — The foodborne bacterial outbreak that has hit Germany and other European nations is unlike anything Western experts have seen: 16 dead and more than 1,000 sick, including nearly 400 suffering severe and potentially fatal symptoms. But several days into the health threat, scientists remain unsure what produce – and what country – is responsible.

Investigators across Europe were frantically trying to determine the scope of the contamination by an unusual strain of the common E. coli germ – and where in the long journey from farm to grocery store the contamination occurred. German authorities pointed to a few cucumbers from Spain, but further tests showed that those vegetables, while contaminated, did not cause the outbreak.

In Germany, where the vast majority of deaths and severe illnesses have been reported, officials said that investigations including interviews with patients have shown that people were likely infected by eating raw cucumbers, tomatoes or lettuce. They are warning consumers to avoid those vegetables, and Russia went so far as to ban imports of those vegetables from Spain or Germany.

In its most severe form, the infection can attack the kidneys, sometimes causing seizures, strokes and comas.

It's "extraordinary" to see so many cases of the kidney complication from a foodborne illness, said Dr. Robert Tauxe, a foodborne disease expert at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"There has not been such an outbreak before that we know of in the history of public health," Tauxe said.

He added that the strain of E. coli in the European outbreak has not been seen previously in the United States. The CDC said two cases have been reported in the U.S., and that both people had recently traveled to Hamburg, Germany, where many of the infections occurred. The agency did not say what states the two people are in, but said it was working with state health departments to learn more about the cases and identify others.

There have been several high-profile foodborne outbreaks in the U.S. in recent years, but none with such a high death toll. There's little precedent in Europe, either. In 1996, an E. coli outbreak in the United Kingdom caused 216 cases and 11 deaths.

The CDC said two cases from the latest outbreak have been reported in the U.S., and that both people had recently traveled to Hamburg, Germany, where many of the infections occurred. The agency did not say what states the two people are in, but said it was working with state health departments to learn more about the cases and identify others.

The World Health Organization said 86 percent of those sickened were adults, and two-thirds were women. It said it was unusual that more children weren't affected.

E. coli is found in the digestive systems of humans, cows and other mammals. It has been responsible for a large number of food poisoning outbreaks around the world. In most cases, it simply causes diarrhea and other non-lethal stomach ailments.

But the bacteria involved in the latest outbreak, EHEC, causes more severe symptoms, ranging from bloody diarrhea to hemolytic uremic syndrome – the rare kidney condition that the most seriously ill patients are suffering from. At least 373 people in Germany and 15 in Sweden have come down with the syndrome, which normally kills roughly 5 percent of the patients who get it.

The syndrome is not just a short-term problem: Ten to 20 years after they recover, between 30 percent and half of survivors will have some kidney-caused problem, experts say.

A Swedish woman who died early Tuesday was the first, and so far the only, fatality linked to the outbreak outside Germany.

The latest German death occurred Tuesday in the northwestern city of Paderborn, but German regional officials said they are seeing a sharp drop in the number of new cases.

Total cases, including less severe EHEC infections, top 1,150 in Germany alone. Other infections have been reported in Denmark, France, the Czech Republic, the U.K., the Netherlands and Switzerland. Many patients in those cases had recently traveled to Germany.

The highly politicized mystery deepened with new evidence that German vegetables may have been contaminated by at least two strains of EHEC, or enterohaemorrhagic E. coli.

Authorities in Hamburg said last week that they had detected EHEC on four cucumbers in a market in the northern German city, three imported from Spain and the fourth of unclear origin.

European Union officials said Germany identified cucumbers from the Spanish regions of Almeria and Malaga as possible sources of contamination, and that a third suspect batch, originating either in the Netherlands or in Denmark and sold in Germany, was also under investigation.

On Tuesday, however, officials said they had found a slightly different type of EHEC on the cucumbers than the strain detected in the feces of sick people in Germany. That means those cucumbers did not cause the outbreak, but posed a health risk nonetheless, the German officials said.

Spain's agriculture minister, Rosa Aguilar, seized on the find as evidence that "our cucumbers are not responsible for the situation." Spain exports most of its produce to other countries in Europe.

Denmark said no traces of EHEC bacteria were found in tests of vegetables conducted there over the weekend. Exports of Dutch cucumbers to Germany were halted but authorities said tests of a cucumber grower and a warehouse found no EHEC bacteria there, either.

The northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, which neighbors Hamburg and is one of the worst affected, said tests on 141 samples of food including cucumbers, tomatoes, milk products, zucchini and poultry had found no EHEC. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, another northern state, has been unable to find EHEC in 38 samples so far.

Russia's chief sanitary agency on Monday banned cucumbers, tomatoes and fresh salad from Spain and Germany, and said it may extend the ban to all European Union member nations because of questions about the source of the infection.

hmmm... with all the food regulations in Europe.

Good point! Maybe all the food regulations should be reviewed.

Several possible unsubstantiated theory's for this "new strain". Biological man made? Gadhafi attacks Germany/Europe with new mutation? Fall out from Iceland's Volcanic ash?23%.China's attempt to eradicate the West with Biological weapon? Just a new strain of BActeria which has evolved into what it is today? 7%. A weapon that you could acquire and manufacture unnoticed quite easily then isnt it obvious that a Bio is the weapon of choice of extremists who believe that they are doing the work of Ala and that there demise is only the passing onto the next life. Gadhafi has been forced into a corner were if he so wishes, he can set forth his revenge attack on the West. America know this, they know he has Bio capabilities because they gave him that knowledge. The world leaders know that the globe as a whole needs to eradicate 30.000.000.000 inhabitants for it to survive. Demand of resources has outstripped supply ten fold. There is no quick or long fix for this problem other than eradication. Im sorry that is not quite true? There is a fix, however the fix is one in which the wealthy lose there wealth and the people all become equal human beings. Can you honestly see the wealthy giving there wealth away? The mighty coming down from that mountain to greet the meek? Eradication is a much more viable option as it will get rid of......drift wood as Obama,Bush,Blare, Sarkosy,Cameron put it.

So much for the reporting, how can anyone except having the same words in two different paragraphs as reliable news! Tis a shame.....

It may be that this batch of contaminated foods were not properly prepared and washed, however if that is not the case, I expect this crisis to expand geometrically
10:48 PM on 06/04/2011
It will. The bacteria has changed, the geometric part depends on how long it will take us to figure out where the bacteria comes from . Sometimes this info is never found, so, we will have to wait for some med that will be able to fight the epidemic.
Whatever happens first, in the meantime, it's a good idea to wash fruits and vegetables really well. I would be careful also about eating salads and fruits in restaurants. Just careful. Exercising common-sense.

we all need to stop fertilizing with animal poop!! only then will the e. coli be controlled. the Native Americans used to use dead fish as fertilizer, perhaps they were on to something with that. if we use the guts and cast offs from the fishing industry to fertilize, there may be less risk of e.coli infections. of course, fish carry a host of other problems now a days (thanks to humans), so it may not work. we do need to seriously consider new fertilizing methods though.

To thesilentcrow: You seem to have have no knowledge of agriculture.
Were you born and raised in the city?
Your "fish" story is a joke.

I'm 57 yo and grew up in the country.
We used cow manure and chicken manure as fertilizer all of the time.
If the produce is properly washed, there is no problem.

In fact, I ate peas, beans, and tomatoes straight out of the garden and had no problems.

You seem to have no clue and should stay off these comment boards.
03:41 PM on 06/14/2011
i live in a small town in michigan surrounded by farms. they all use manure to fertilize, however, there have got to be better methods of fertilization out there. all mammals have e.coli bacteria in their colons. washing the food helps, but sometimes you don't get lucky and end up sick. i eat things right out of my garden, but i do not fertilize with manure. i understand the most economical way in the agriculture industry to fertilize is to use manure, but i was stating a possible alternative to the use of manure. to be so obnoxiously insulting by stating i don't have a clue is both rude and inappropriate. i do have a clue and want to see possible e.coli infections eliminated from the food industry someday.

so true, thanks also for reminding all of us of the wisdom of the American Indians.
10:20 PM on 06/02/2011
Just another indication that we must think globally and internationally. Borders have dissolved. We have enough food problems in the U.S. Remember hamburger, jalepeno (sp?) peppers, peanut butter, pistachio nuts, spinach--just a couple of the more recent food recalls? We import almost 40% of our food, and don't have enough FDA and USDA inspectors to take care of imports, much less inspecting our own home-grown food supply. (But, green, seedless grapes from Chile are still the best ever! Even trust shrimp from Thailand more than those from the Gulf of Mexico now.)

Not to worry! The GOTP wants to decrease funding for FDA and USDA, to help keep government out of our business.

They're still not willing to get out of our bedrooms and private lives, though.

The Europeans can learn a lot from Americans in terms of many things, including food safety.
10:50 PM on 06/02/2011
Haha, that's funny. Did you know that you can eat raw pork in Germany because the feed that they give their pigs kills the trichinosis? In addition, you can still eat raw; it is called Steak tartare and was first served in French restaurants in the early 20th century. The reason it isn't common is that it is expensive and is because of the process that it has to go through while alive as well as the after slaughtered. This is why your many restraunts won't serve a rare burger. It's just because they are buying crappy meat. Of course that goes for fruits and vegetables as well. The more care you take, the higher to cost. So, we hire a bunch of illegals to piss and dedicate on our food because everyone wants cheap food and voilà! you have tainted spinach. Now days we can barely eat anything without risking your health. That said, I am not one of those people that run around thinking that Europe has everything right as I disagree with their socialist ways and I'm not going to insult you or be a butt-head about this but will politely ask that you consider what you are going to say before making arbitrary statements like this one. Europeans are not dumb and/or backwards. A little to liberal for my taste but hardly dumb or backwards.

it's all GMO's fault. Oh wait.....GMO food is mostly outlawed in Europe. I guess all that GMO banning to keep the food "healthy" has worked out well for Europe hasn't it.

Well, perhpas the thing to test is the fertilizer or recycable water that this produce may be supported by, because this may the methodology used by a terrorist to affect that many nations; and all it would take is a "Few Bad Men" to "Slip A Mickey" into systems simultaneously - to catch the officials off-gurad and guessing for answers while people are dying.

Experts have been warning our own FDA and the World Health community in general that this type of antibiotic resistant bacterial "superbug) was something that was likely to happen at any time due to our incredible overuse of anti-biotics, not only to fight colds (against which antibiotics are worthless anyway, since over 90% of them are caused by viruses), but also pumping livestock full of antibiotics. Of course the FDA (and its European Counterparts) have done nothing and now all of us will be paying the price in the coming years, with many peoples lives at risk. Bacteria have a process called conjugation where they can "exchange" DNA with other bacteria. It happens all the time and with more and more antibiotic resistant bacteria it's only a matter of time before something really horrible emerges that will kill thousands if not tens of thousands or millions of people.

Has anyone put any thought that this could be an act of terrorism. Bombs aren't the only way to get to terrorize the populice. Think about it, food is a great place to scare the crap out of any one.
05:37 PM on 06/02/2011
Hey bud....I just read everyone's blogs, and you're the only one that is on the same page as I am.
The bacterium, has 3 genes that resist antibiotics......that's not how mother nature works.....when a gene is extra or is in the process of evolving, it got there from nature...when the old gene is gone, and there is no evolutionary evidence, it would seem that it was replaced. I have stock in a company that removed the gene silkworms have, and replaced it with the corresponding silk gene from a spider......the "silk" by mass, is the strongest substance on the planet......the first product will be micro structures for medical use like repairing damaged organs, to strengthen weak bones in some cases instead of artificial replacement.
This genetic procedure is known in many countries, even though this particular company is a patent holder......besides, what al Qaeda thug and his operatives cares about patent infringement.....BYW, China has a few gene splicing companies.
To put a % on this, honestly, it looks like, given all the available info, when added to the when and where this all happened, that it's biological terrorism.....and in the recent past, there was salmonella contaminated fruit in So. America, and various foods with it and e.Coli here in our country.......Islamic terrorists are already well known for having "test runs" for skyjackings.
