Alex Burrows Bites Patrice Bergeron? Canuck Denies Biting Bruins Center (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/02/11 09:26 AM ET Updated: 08/02/11 06:12 AM ET

Alex Burrows Patrice Bergeron

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals took a bizarre turn at the end of the first period when Vancouver's Alex Burrows appeared to bite Bruins center Patrice Bergeron.

A big scrum broke out behind the Bruins net and replays showed Bergeron's right index finger enter Burrows' mouth. The Canucks winger looked as if he bit down on Bergeron's finger before they were separated.

Burrows received a double-minor penalty for roughing and Bergeron was given a roughing minor.

"Oh yeah, he did. He cut me a little bit on my finger," Bergeron said after the game. "I'm not going to be here and complain about it. I'll let the league do its job, but he sure did."

Burrows, however, denied biting his opponent.

"I don't think so. I think he had his finger in my mouth. I don't think I bit him," Burrows said. "He put his hand up, he put it in the other guy's face, and a finger got in my mouth. That's what happened."

Scroll down to watch the incident.

Used hockey gloves are gross. Having one of those in his mouth was punishment enough for Burrows.

Really-is that all you have. I remember reading all the Vancouver fans here and on other sites complaining how the refs were giving the Bruins all the breaks. You want to see a whiner-look in the mirror.

Did Bergeron give Burrows a face wash and stick his finger in Burrows' mouth? I'd bite it too.

You know, this is a tough sport, but BITING, come on...that is just LOW. Canucks can feel the cup slipping away and this is what they resort to....

Slipping away...hmmm...

Canucks 4, Hawks 3
Canucks 4, Preds 2
Canucks 4, Sharks 1

Going from strength to strength. A sweep in 4 would keep that nice little pattern going.

Yup, and they one that game 4 with the hawks by the SKIN of their teeth, by luck. Don't be too proud---they WORKEDpretty hard to beat the Hawks--and it almost WASN'T. FYI
12:31 PM on 06/03/2011
As I recall, they won game 4 against the Sharks on a bad icing call, well they tied it up with 4 seconds to go on the bad call and won in overtime on a fluke goal. Now, I realize that the game is 60 minutes long and the Sharks had plenty of time to win, but to lose a game in that fashion, and a playoff game at that, is wrong. Hey NHL! got review?

The cowardly little girl got away with the bite. Another black mark on a sport known for inconsistent punishment.

Even MMA has a no fish-hooking rule. Bergeron doesn't want his finger bitten- don't stick it in another man's mouth. Real simple.
Speaking of inconsistent punishment, didn't the NHL claim it was going to get serious about headshots? And yet Krejci cross-checks a fallen opponent, in the head, possibly knocking him out of game 2, and gets no suspension. Miraculously you don't have a problem with that.

What's wrong cry baby? Can't use Campbell as an excuse?
If a Bruins was the one to bite, and not get suspended, you would be ALL OVER IT,
You Bruins haters are pathetic!

I thought of Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield's ear at that moment. He should get 25 games for that.

Holyfield didn't stick his ear in Tyson's mouth so it's a false analogy.

This incident aside, this year is the first time I have seen repeated flops to get penalty calls in the NHL. I hope this does not go the way of soccer and the nba. If you watch Kessler you will see a guy who gets fouled constantly but still manages to score in the crease without resorting to theatrics. When the refs look for blood on a high sticking to decide if its a 2 or 4 minute penalty, how long until guys go all WWF and cut themselves?

No suspension!

Maybe they figured whatever bite was applied or not applied was through the guy's glove, so maybe they figured it wasn't a big deal.

He got the double minor - that was enough. I'd even go for a fine, but not a suspension. The NHL needs some consistency on discipline issues.

Most of what gets disciplined happens on the ice. When you take it off the ice and into the stands, it should be more strictly disciplined. Yet when Horton (Bruin) sprays a fan in the Tampa series, he gets no suspension when in the reg season he would have been gone for 1-2 games. So if you're not taking Horton out because of the playoffs, you can't take Burrows out either.

Hopefully Shanahan will bring some sense of consistency to the league now.

Bergeron sticks his glove in Burrow's mouth and Alex clamps down. Fine, he got the extra two minutes - that's all it deserves. That's what penalties are for - to penalize during the game.

Has anyone on this board actually TRIED biting through a hockey glove. Good Luck if you can manage to do it, AND cut a finger, AND draw blood.

I'm not saying he didn't bite down, I'm disputing the blood aspect. I haven't seen it on any of the reviews. The only thing I've seen is Bergeron complaining to the refs.
03:13 PM on 06/02/2011
No blood no foul and now we know no suspension. If you shove you hand in some face, things happen, that why you where glove.
