Buff, Smith & Hensman For Sale

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/02/11 01:21 PM ET   Updated: 08/02/11 06:12 AM ET

This 1996 Buff, Smith & Hensman designed home has been listed for $1.79 million. Located in Altadena, CA with views of the San Gabriel Valley and the LA basin. The mid-century modern aesthetic is enhanced by teak cabinets, slate floors, and stainless steel appliances throughout. With 3,345 square feet of living space, the four bedroom and three bathroom property also features an expansive saltwater swimming pool.

Buff, Smith & Hensman are known for many homes in the Los Angeles area- primarily those of 1950's Post and Beam architecture. The Buff, Smith, and Hensman style changed over decades and in the 1970's their designs reflected the Mass, Shade, and Shadow mode. Later homes, such as this, blend different eras.

I know most of the comments here compare this home to an office building, but I really like it for some reason. A salt water pool sounds wonderfully refreshing, too!

Since 1996 doesn't fall within the years defined as mid-century, I would assume the page editor meant to say it was 'inspired' by the mid-century modern period.

What wasted space in that bathroom. That counter is ridiculously long. Overall, the house looks like an office building or a library. That front entryway...? No. Just... no.

Well then I guess we should all leave our homes and join them. Congratulations for profound musings.

I lied. I have more to pontificate. I just espied the living room. I happen to be a pianist. A green pianist, a pianist who can occasionally find middle C, but only if it is in tune. In a room like that, one is paying the big bucks to keep it heated and in the meantime it is my guess that the strings in that piano are doing the boing boing every time the temperature changes in LA. Does it change in LA? That I don't know. I do know grandiloquence that mocks energy conservation, modesty, common sense. That poor little piano, left alone in that cavern. The acoustics probably suck, and the chances are that all it ever gets to do is a few measure of Fuer Elise.

It is typically between 60 and 70 degrees at all times in LA.

Boy. Gee Whiz. Well, let's get started.

1. How about the nuanced homage to the post and lintel system. Are we thinking Greek Temple Brute here? Do the owners wear togas starched into stark white angles, maybe white mortarboard hats to fit in?

2. It's International Mercy Day, so 2 is the last, just a tip of the hat to the pic of the view, LA at max smoggy. Somebody is having fun.

Although it's nice and contemporary, the overly high ceilings make it look like a converted bank.
