Dog Found Thanks To Facebook And Craigslist (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/04/11 05:24 PM ET Updated: 08/03/11 06:12 AM ET

Facebook has been blamed for many hours of procrastination and stalking, but what about finding a lost dog?

The Associated Press reports that Lucy, a golden retriever, went missing in Minnesota. A truck driver found the dog on the side of the road, and picked her up. Nobody knew who she belonged to, and so the truck driver took her along as a travel companion, ending up in Indiana.

Amber Yaw, the owner of Lucy, posted a lost ad on Facebook. At the same time, the man who found the dog posted an ad on Craigslist. A connection was made, and the owners traveled to Indiana and retrieved their lost dog.

As Patti Yaw, the owner's mother says, "Had we not had the internet, had Amber not done what she did, had the person who took her not put it on Craigslist... all of these different things had to work together."

While this story has a happy ending, thousands of other dogs are currently abandoned and living on the streets. There are many opportunities to adopt a pet, including through another dog-saving website, Petfinder.com.

All pets should be chipped. But for faster identification and ability to reconnect, all pets should have a tag with their name, address & PHONE NUMBER.

Make sure the tag is readable and current.

it's heartbreaking to lose a pet.
a friend of mine lost his cat while traveling from florida to kentucky. he stayed at the rest area for hours calling her but she must have bolted into some woods.
poor guy had to leave knowing she was there alone and afraid.

Nice story. Good for hound and owner.
No reason to go fadebook though. There are other, much more acceptable, channels as is pointed out in the article.

Microchipping - registered microchip would have helped solve this problem. If you love them -microchip your pets and REGISTER the microchip!!

I have heard stories of lost animals with a microchip and not one person bothered to scan the dog to find out if he/she was lost, and then some years later the dog ends up in some shelter, and finally someone scans the dog, and the dog is returned to owner 5 years later.

If people find a dog, the best thing to do is take that dog to the vet or shelter and have the dog scanned.

The rabies tag has a ID number and phone number. The issuing town or Vet would have been able to provide the name and address of the owner. I guess the driver just needed a little company on his long drive.

There was a phone number on one of those tags. Why didn't the bus driver call?
