A Pennsylvania man faces animal cruelty charges in Illinois after allegedly drugging a Siberian husky at a DuPage County dog show.

Ralph Ullum, 67, allegedly gave the dog human pills because he wanted to help his girlfriend's dog win last year's American Kennel Club show, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Ullum, who was seen petting the dog before the drugs were discovered in its system, denies the charges. His attorney told the Associated Press that his client had no reason to hurt the husky, because his girlfriend's dog had already won the competition.

“It’s a very highly competitive world," the lawyer told the Sun-Times. "Emotions were flying high that day."

Ullum could be sentenced to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine if convicted.
