Naipaul is unquestionably far, far better novelist than Athill.

Sir VSN needs to mind his manners and learn to be nice with those with lesser talents.

After reading a couple of excerpts from his authorized biography; it seems that Naipaul is pretty much a nasty parasite in his treatment of the women in his life. It's hardly surprising that his contempt for women extends to writers as well. He should be laughed at more often, IMO.
