Barack Obama Needs More Jobs To Keep His Job

Obama Jobs

BEN FELLER   06/ 4/11 04:04 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama cannot escape one giant vulnerability as he bids to keep his job: Millions of voters still don't have one.

Suddenly, the snapshot of the American economy is depressing again.

Job creation is down. So is consumer confidence. And homes sales, auto sales, construction spending, manufacturing expansion.

The brutal month of May was a reminder of the economy's fragility and the risks for an incumbent president.

Nothing that Obama oversees, not even a success as dramatic as finding and killing Osama bin Laden, will matter as much as his handling of the economy. It is the dominant driver of voter behavior. People hold their president accountable if they can't find work in the richest country in the world.

The weakening recovery is testing the entire foundation of Obama's optimistic economic message, that the nation is getting stronger all the time. As much as the White House says it never dwells on any single jobs report, and Obama never even mentioned the troubling one released Friday, the stakes get higher by the month.

A finally forming field of Republican presidential competitors is maneuvering into the space for the public's attention with this message: Obama has failed.

Election Day 2012 is 17 months away, and Obama's campaign knows incremental job growth won't do. The unemployment rate is 9.1 percent. If it stays anywhere near there, Obama will face re-election with a higher jobless rate than any other post-war president.

In his favor, Obama still has the loudest voice to sell his message that the longer term trends, including job growth every month, are good.

Nearly halfway through a year dominated by foreign events mostly outside his control, he plans to build his next few months around economic events.

So what comes next will be a summer when both sides select the economic facts that best suit their case. It will play against a backdrop of trying to cut a massive deficit while letting the nation borrow more so it doesn't default.

As Obama pushes his economic agenda, his re-election chances bank on more than job growth. They also depend on how well he can remind people that he inherited a recession and that compared with the early days of 2009, the country is in a better place.

"This economy took a big hit," Obama said Friday in Ohio, a pivotal 2012 state. "You know, it's just like if you had a bad illness, if you got hit by a truck, it's going to take a while for you to mend. And that's what's happened to our economy. It's taking a while to mend."

Is progress enough to convince people that he deserves a second term?

If so, he can't afford many setbacks like the new jobs report. Employers in May added just 54,000 jobs, the fewest in eight months. Almost 14 million people are jobless. Analysts suggested the economy could improve this year, but the recovery could be weak for months.

"There are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery," Obama said.

The Republicans hoping to unseat him pounced.

_Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney: "President Obama has failed to pull us out of this economic downturn.

_Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty: "Obama's failure to address the tough challenges" is clear.

_Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich: "The administration's policies are failing."

Obama's political tendency is to take the longer view. An Associated Press-GfK poll less than a month ago, for example, showed rising public optimism about the economy and his stewardship.

The election won't be just a referendum on Obama and the unemployment rate. It also will offer a choice between his economic ideas and his opponent's. Still, just as change worked for him last time, it can be used against him in 2012.

Even 8 percent unemployment, a goal once promoted by the administration, is hard to see now.

Presidents Jimmy Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush all faced unemployment rates higher than 7.5 percent in the final months of their re-election campaigns. Reagan won, and an important factor for him was that the jobless rate was declining at the time. Carter and Bush lost.

Obama, for now, has no reason to engage the politicians trying to win his job. He instead presents himself as the workers' champion who risked his own capital and their money in a successful bid to help Chrysler and General Motors survive and return to profitability.

"I'll tell you what. I'm going to keep betting on you," Obama told workers at a Chrysler plant in Toledo, Ohio.

And hope they'll do the same for him.

I'ts really pathetic. The country that won the cold war and stared down a bigger adversary can't get I'ts act together and cut this debt.We can't afford the upward tragectery in which the entitlements are heading. When this president had both houses of congress he couldn't get a budget passed. The Communist system we fought against for so many decades we seem to embrace.

When i hear a politician talk , it sounds like a toilet flushing . Remember the secret white house bank , where a politician could go in and hand the teller a slip of paper asking for 10 - 20 - or $30,000 , and was given the money . This was supposed to be a loan , which none of them ever paid back . It was theft of taxpayers money by our leaders . At the same teller they could buy pot and crack . This was big news at the time. Clinton closed the bank after it hit the news . These are the caliber of people running our country . And you fools will re-elect them . Then you will blame everybody else for the poor conditions in the country . Re-elect them you fools .

The title of this article is misleading. I think most people realize the GOP caused this and are perpetuating it. To keep his job he needs to stand up for what he says he believes and stay with it. So far he been like a reed blowing in the wind.

4% of the 8 million illegal foreigin nationals working jobs in the USA, illegally ~ work at seasonal-temporary produce harvesting. 8 million x 4% - 320,000 illegal workers

If the U.S. Gov't were to deport the other 7.68 million illlegal workiers in the USA & replace those vacated jobs with U.S. Citizens ~ The May 2011, Unemployment Rate would drop 5% points from
9.1% to 4.1%

The squabble here seems to be personal. Those guys are bad, nuh-huh your guys are worse. If the anonymous people here cant bring something to the table how are our elected officials supposed to?
I for one am of the opinion that punitive tax is the way to prosperity. As was the case in this countries hayday. Either reinvest in the business or be taxed silly. Job creation, strong upwardly mobile middle class. These are some of the things of importance to this American.

Obama has ignored the economy during his entire term. Nothing short of a miracle will help him now. Oh well maybe a bunch of poor candidates from the GOP too.
10:18 PM on 06/06/2011
The Republicans ran on creating new jobs. Instead they choose to make social issues their first priority.

President Obama took office when our Nation was in a steady down fall. He stopped the fall. Yes, things are still rough out there, but at least he had some positive results. So far, the Republicans have only had a negative effect.

This is the message to get out to all voters.

Obama 2012!

Looks to me like Obama is still doing better overall in 2 years than where Bush/Cheney and the GOP/TP left this country in 2008 (and have done nothing since to create jobs since taking the House 4 months ago, despite promising jobs creation):

Here's a unique thought~

Quoting from the same unemployment rate source as everyone else uses

The U.S. Dept of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics?

I guess you don't like the comparison to unemployment under Bush v Obama. I understand. You prefer to look at particular months for a reason. . . .not look at years.

BHO took office January 20, 2009 ~ Unemployment was 7.6%
28 months later, after $787 billion Stimulus Plan ~ May 2011, Unemployment is 9.1%

28 months ~ 1.5% increase of in unemployment = 2.3 million jobs lost

2.3 million / 28 months = 82,000 jobs average lost per month

82,000 jobs lost per month / 30 days/months = 2,733 jobs average lost per day

2,733 jobs lost per day = 1 job lost per every 37 seconded since BHO took office

$393,500.00 average cost of each job lost since BHO's 2009 STIMULUS Plan

You seem to conveniently ignore the fact that compared to where Bush and the GOP/TP left this country in 2008, right now, the trend is downwards in unemployment, from a high of over 10%:

Still waiting for all those job and job creation bills promised during the campaign of 2010 by the GOP/TP and Mr. Boehner, who have yet to propose one job creation or jobs bill!

Where are the jobs Mr. Boehner?

Obama has created more jobs in 2 years than Bush created in 8 years of office, and has brought unemployment down from over the 10%-11% that Bush/Cheney and the GOP/TP left this nation with when they left in disgrace.

Where are those jobs bills and jobs creation bills Mr. Boehner and the GOP/TP?

Obama added more jobs in his 2 years as President than Bush added in his entire 8 years, including the additional 54,000 new jobs this month. So where are those job creation bills and job bills you promised GOP/TP and Boehner? Nary one jobs bill or jobs creation bill in the now 4 months since you were installed.

Don't forget GOP/TP and Mr. Boehner, you campaigned on "job creation" . . .so where are those jobs bills and jobs creation bills?

Barack Obama and Pelosi created more jobs in 1 year than Bush did in 8 and, mind you, even under this last month blip, another 54,000 jobs were created:

I would laugh myself silly if the President came out with a new plan tomorrow to cut all taxes to zero... and challenged the states to follow suit... think that would create a few jobs?? surely, right?
10:24 PM on 06/06/2011
LOL William! Only Republicans believe the lie that tax cuts create jobs. It doesn't matter how often they are proven wrong, they still believe it. I think someone wrote it in a book once.

Obama 2012!
