Anthony Weiner Press Conference: Admits Sending Racy Pictures, Refuses To Resign

First Posted: 06/06/11 06:11 PM ET Updated: 08/06/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW YORK -- Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) insisted he’s staying in office Monday, even as a string of embarrassing new revelations and photos emerged that apparently reveal a hidden, lascivious online life.

At first, Weiner vehemently denied that a photo of an underwear-clad erection, sent via Twitter to a 21-year-old woman, had come from him, insisting he’d been hacked.

But conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart and his website Big Government rolled out a series of new pictures Monday, including a shirtless shot that appears to depict Weiner flexing and photographing himself.

Breitbart also claimed to have X-rated pictures of Weiner, and other outlets, including Radar Online and ABC News, reported having more damaging information from women Weiner had purportedly communicated with.

“I am deeply ashamed of my terrible actions,” a tearful Weiner told reporters at a remarkable press conference in New York.

“I came here to accept the full responsibility for what I've done,” he said, apologizing to his wife of one year, Huma Abedin, and reporters and others he lied to about the initial reports. He even said he was sorry to Breitbart, who had commandeered the podium for his own impromptu press event before Weiner spoke.

"I’m here to watch myself be vindicated,” said Breitbart, who had faced criticism for his role in the scandal.

Photo from BigGovernment.com:

Weiner admitted that he had had ongoing online relationships with six women, and said that he talked to his wife about ones that predated their wedding last summer.

But she did not know about the more recent communication, and Abedin only learned Monday morning that Weiner had lied about having tweeted the photo, he said.

Weiner insisted he was staying in office because he felt he was a good legislator, and he vowed to recapture the respect and trust of his Queens and Brooklyn voters, in spite of the lies, embarrassment and ridicule he will likely face.

He also said that although he had lied repeatedly about his lewd behavior, he felt he had violated no laws or ethics rules.

“I don’t see anything in what I did that violated the rules of the House,” Weiner said. “I don’t believe I did anything that violates any law or any rule.”

He didn’t have any explanation for his online habits.

“I don't know what I was thinking,” Weiner said, explaining that he thought his sexting and racy communications were “frivolous.” He also said that he has never met any of the women he communicated with in person. He declined to say if he engaged in phone sex with them, as the latest allegations claim.

“It was something that I did that was just wrong, and I regret it,” Weiner said, adding that he panicked when the first tweets went public, and lied to hide his other X-rated activities.

“I was embarrassed, I was humiliated,” he said. “I was trying to protect myself and my wife.”

He insisted he did not use government equipment, using his own phone and his home computer, to communicate with the women.

People who know Weiner were stunned, having argued as recently as last week that he was too smart to have done what he was accused of.

“Well, apparently he wasn’t,” one told The Huffington Post.

Another said keeping his job may be the least of his worries.

“Forget staying in office. He’s going to get divorced," the person said.

The congressman insisted that his marriage would survive, and said he might seek psychiatric help.

“I'm going to try to handle this, and I have not ruled out seeing someone,” he said. “This is a deep weakness that I have demonstrated, and for that I apologize."

At the Weiner presser, Breitbart takes to the microphone to defend his site's reporting.

"I'm not going to get into how Weiner should respond to this," he says. "I'm here to respond to some basic questions."

"We didn't name the girl," he says, but other sites "attacked the messenger."

"How is this revenge? There was zero premeditation involved in this. This is a legitimate story."

"I'm doing this to save his family" Breitbart says about his decision not to post a photo that the BigGovernment.com site describes as "extremely graphic, and leaves nothing to the imagination."

"I'm trying to do the decent thing here and not release the photo."

ABC News has released an interview with Meagan Broussard, a 26-year-old single mother from Texas who provided ABC with dozens of photos, emails, Facebook messages and cell phone call logs.

During one flirtatious Facebook chat last month, Broussard said, she issued the man on the other end a challenge.

"I asked him to take a picture and write 'me' on it so I would know," Broussard said in an interview.

The reply, she says, came moments later. Email records provided to ABC News by Broussard show that at 3:08 p.m. on May 5th she received a message from anthonyweiner@aol.com, which is listed as an email address for Weiner on one campaign document found online.

The message included an image of a man, who appears to be Weiner, sporting a tie and a wedding band, holding up the message "me" on a piece of white paper.

"I didn't think it was him," she says. "I thought for sure, 'why would someone in that position be doing this?'"

She says the online relationship started on April 20, 2011.

In a previous post I suggested that the reason Democrats are calling on Wiener to resign is that we have standards and the supporters of Ensign, Vitter, et. al. do not have standards. I am not suggesting that I want Wiener to resign, just rationalizing the dichotomy between the response by Republicans to transgressions from their own, and the response by Democrats to misdeeds by Democratic politicians. I should have said that a greater number of Democrats have standards than do Republicans.

Republicans back up thier own when they are in trouble but democrats always pick on thier own until they have to resign.WHY?? Rep. Weiner is a strong person & always backs his people up,We need lots more of them. Polose was elected to impeach Bush. But did she? NO she could not think of a single thing to impeach him for but if she had a loved one lost in Iraq then I'm sure of lot she could have thought of then. Shes the one one that she resign NOT Weiner. She has no back bone at all.l Weiner is strong. KEEP him as we NEED more like him. Ellen

One word: Standards. We have them, Republicans do not. It isn't expedient or convenient, but it's the correct way to go. Let Republicans be represented by pigs if that is what they are willing to accept. I'm sure we can find a Democrat in Wiener's district who will do his work without the added distractions.

Harold: I respectfully disagree with you & the reason I disagree is because we do have those that have done wrong, in our democratic circles. Remember in the 2000 election when a judge, democrats & republicans where in a LOCKED room & where counting the voted When a loud knock came at the door, the Democrats ran out the back door like a bunch of cockroaches. They had no backbone to stand up for our country. Gore got many more votes then Bush yet they did'nt fight this & let the peoples votes go down the toilet. They still don't have a backbone. Those in congress now have let 41 republicans tell them what to do. No wonder so many voters stayed home in the last election as they were disgusted with the democrats that they had fought so hard for, they did'nt fight for them. They had control of the House,House of Represenatives & the Senate yet they did'nt have the backbone to stand up for their voters. They are a still doing the .samething. .We need ALLthe fighters we can get thats why I want Weiner to stay & fight for us. He has a strong backbone. What he did was wrong but not half as bad as what these democrats with no backbone are doing to our precious country.. Weiner will be alright when he comes out from getting help with his addiction. I will ALWAYS stand by a fighter as we have so very few. Gramma Ellen

are we still going around in circles...............resign, don't resign... who cares...there are so many other issues much more important that wheter or not WEINER lets the world see his weiner on the internet..........bottom line, his wife should be the one that cares... and does she? we are not married to him.... he lied, period... another politician who lies.... should we trust anything he says, believes in...? probabily not.... do i want him in power... NO, I DON'T... if he lied about this, he''ll lie about anything else...! but this has become a vicious circle... we are not going to solve the problem...............bottom line, he's the one who is going to decide what to do,,,!

The thought of Anthony Weiner in "racy" pictures is a bit incongruous. In order to be in "racy" pictures, the object of the pic needs to have a bit of sex appeal - Weiner has none! But there are a few Republican congressmen who have it! :)

What kind of example is this man setting for the youth of America who are already dealing with the temptations of sexting and bullying online? To say he is a poor moral example doesn't begin to cover it!

He lied but at least he wasn't going into bathroom stalls looking for gay sex like some republicans or going after his male interns.....
05:00 PM on 06/09/2011
The bottom line: It wasn't the pictures, or whether he cheated on his wife, or he used Government phones to talk dirty to someone, it is that HE LIED! A politician, like a cop, has NOTHING if they don't have their honesty and integrity!

I love the hypocrisy from the right. I’m not going to judge Anthony Weiner for what he did. As my grandmother use to say, “Every hose has its kinks”. He didn’t break the law (so far). I just wish he would have had the guts to come out and say from the start, “Yes, it’s me. It’s something I like to do in my spare time. Some people like to jog to relief stress, others like to dress up in a diaper and have a Washington call girl take care of them, still others like to hang out in airport bathroom stalls. Me, I just like sexting with consenting adults.” The story is then about the admission and not the lies.

I tend to agree with @tresluv. Kinda crazy that they'd call for Weiner to resign when Vitter's still sitting pretty in the Senate. And honestly how paltry is this scandal compared to those of our European brethren... http://goo.gl/oVjZR
