Interesting. What I think needs to be focused on and promoted is also the communal aspect of bookstores. No e-reader will replace a gathering site for students, adults groups, kids groups etc. The atmosphere in the bookstore for these activities is vastly superior to most other places. You in essence are selling the surrounding.

Kaplan is horrible...i refuse to support kaplan and its profit college. Which only uses kaplan books which are republished biannually so used textbooks are worthless..
There is the reason kaplan is profitable...
Once again the wealthy dictators figure out a way to steal from the middle class.

Hmm... expanding kid's book sales. Smart move considering most parents would prefer to give a small child a $10 hardcover instead of an $800 iPad.

This guy is amazing. I live in Miami and Mr. Kaplan gives back to the community, really cares about art and literature and education and is in the business because he truly LOVES books. I have had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and, no, he would not remember me, but I was struck by how deeply he believes in the power of the written word and the necessity of providing a venue for writers to interact with their public. He does what he loves and what he believes in and it pays off. Good for him!

It seems like his sense of community is a perfect partner to books. That's what many of the large booksellers lost touch with.
