Obama On Economic Fears: 'Not Concerned About A Double-Dip Recession'

Barack Obama Economy Approval Poll

DESMOND BUTLER and NANCY BENAC   06/ 7/11 05:03 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama insisted Tuesday that the country is not at risk of slipping into a double-dip recession, but he conceded he does not know whether a sudden slowdown in job growth is a blip or an indication of a longer, more worrisome trend. The president said the nation is on a solid but uneven path to recovery and the key is to "not panic."

"I am concerned about the fact that the recovery that we're on is not producing jobs as quickly as I want it to happen," Obama said at a joint news conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "Obviously we're experiencing some headwinds."

Obama spoke amid a wave of short-term negative economic news, including a sharp drop in the number of jobs added in America in May after employment growth had shown strong signs for three straight months. Obama said the economy is rebounding well from a disastrous blow dating to 2008 even though millions still endure hard times. He promoted continuing steps already taken, like tax breaks for business investment, and his familiar longer term agenda of debt reduction and spending on education, infrastructure and energy research.

Given the jittery times, a batch of economic data can make people wonder, "Well, are we going to go back this terrible crisis?" Obama said. "And that affects consumer confidence, and it affects business confidence, it affects the capital market. And so our task is to not panic."

The economy is the overarching issue as Obama heads into a 2012 re-election campaign, and a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Tuesday found that disapproval with how Obama is handling the economy and the deficit has reached a new high.

Obama also said he was concerned that a Greek default on its debt could cause enormous complications for the U.S. economy but he signaled that it was a problem for Europe to solve, adding that Germany and other European countries needed to act together to help Greece stabilize its economy. "We think it would be disastrous for us to see an uncontrolled spiral and default in Europe because that could trigger a whole range of other events," he said.

For her part, Merkel weighed in on the United States' own struggles in reducing its debt, saying "I think each and everyone ought to deal with his or her own problems."

"We in Europe have our hands full already with what we need to do," she said. "And I'm absolutely convinced that as we shoulder our responsibility and meet our responsibility, so will the United States of America."

Merkel's visit is her sixth trip to the United States since Obama took office. Later, Obama was to treat Merkel to a night of high pomp at the White House, awarding her the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a black-tie dinner. The gestures appear aimed at boosting a relationship that has seemed more cordial than close.

Obama sought to put to rest any suggestion his relationship with Merkel was in any way strained, praising Merkel's "pragmatic approach to complex issues" and saying that "it's just fun to work together."

Merkel, likewise, depicted a close relationship, although she acknowledged that "sometimes there may be differences of opinion."

Obama and Merkel, for example, have had differences on Libya, after Germany abstained in the U.N. vote that authorized a no-fly zone over Libya and kept its troops out of the NATO-led operation to enforce it.

Obama, without mentioning that, said Germany's deployment of resources in Afghanistan had allowed other NATO allies to increase support for the Libyans, and he stressed that both he and Merkel believe Libyan Leader Moammar Gadhafi has to be removed from power.

Obama said he expects the Germans to play a central role in Libya after Gadhafi is gone.

"There is going to be a lot of work to do when Gadhafi does step down, in terms of getting the Libyan people back on their feet, economic, political work that is going to have to be done," Obama said. "My expectation is going to be that there will be full and robust German support."

On Afghanistan, where Germany has 5,000 troops stationed mostly in the volatile north, Merkel said the two leaders were committed to stabilizing the country not just militarily, but also in terms of bolstering its civil society, adding that "We will not abandon them."

"We wish to go in together, out together," she said of U.S. and German troops. Both leaders face significant opposition to the war from their people at home.

The U.S. has roughly 100,000 troops in Afghanistan, and Obama renewed his pledge to begin a significant drawdown of U.S. troops this summer. Germany hopes to start a gradual troop withdrawal at the end of the year..

On another world trouble spot, Obama said that Iran's nuclear program remains a "very serious concern" for the U.S. and Germany. He threatened greater sanctions against Tehran pending the outcome of a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency this week.

Obama said that if the agency determines again that Iran is continuing to ignore its international obligations, "then we will have no choice but to consider additional steps, including potentially additional sanctions, to intensify the pressure on the Iranian regime."

Obama didn't commit to making a presidential visit to Berlin anytime soon, but recalled having had "fun" giving a speech there when he ran for president in 2008, and drew adoring throngs. Merkel had refused his request to speak in front of the Brandenburg Gate, a Cold War symbol that previous American presidents have used as a backdrop. He spoke at a nearby monument instead.

Merkel hinted it might be different next time, quipping, "I can promise that the Brandenburg Gate will be standing for some more time."

Obama is using both pomp and quiet moments to strengthen his relationship with Merkel. The two leaders met for a quiet dinner in the city's historic Georgetown neighborhood at an elegant restaurant modeled on a country inn.

Merkel comes at a time when she is suffering a loss of popularity amid problems with her coalition partner and a backlash from Germans upset about their country's large contribution to the European financial bailout of Greece. Her decision this month to halt Germany's nuclear energy production by 2022, however, has given her a small boost in a country that long has had a strong anti-nuclear movement.

Merkel also is in the midst of managing the response to an E. coli outbreak linked to raw vegetables that has killed at least 24 people and sickened more than 2,300, most in Germany.

Though Merkel's trip is not a "state visit," because she is the head of Germany's government, not its head of state, it has almost all the trappings. The only difference was that Merkel received a 19-gun salute during the White House arrival ceremony, while a head of state gets 21.

Obama awarded Merkel the Medal of Freedom last year but did not have an opportunity to present it to her. At the time, Obama spoke about her youth in communist East Germany and her dreams of freedom that were not realized until the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Obama said her story was an inspiration to people around the world.

Our economic problem results from a unique and complex array of financial missteps. Nowhere is there a historic example or experience from which to draw solutions. While the Republicans rail against our problem, and the President and staff try to put the best possible face on it, in reality nobody yet has a clue. The only solid outcome; whatever we did prevented a catastrophic financial meltdown taking us into a major depression where unemployment could have reached as high as 20 percent. Not many folks remember how it was until after World War II. In reality, the Republicans still insist on putting money into rich pockets as happened during the previous administration without a major impact on job growth. We must switch political rhetoric from theory to reality where the best solution is for both parties to get off their duffs, begin cooperating for the benefit of this country, and leave all the political posturing behind. People lie when they say they have a solution to our economic problem. Are we on the right track, maybe? Should we change what we are doing, probably not although there have been hiccups. While the economy bounces up and down, there have been more ups than downs. Our nation has moved into a wholly new generation of very impatient voters used to instant gratification. That could be a weakness, as we do not have a world war to bail us out of our economic problem so whatever solution that emerges will take time.

When Obama came to office, everyone had high hopes...I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He said he needed trillions to "stimulate" the economy and clean up after Bush. We were desperate and gave him a blank check...it ended up by more being pumped into the "economy" than all the years prior Obama combined.....where did it go?...what did it do? The economy is still in the tank and some say in danger of sinking....how much more money can we print? Obama blamed Bush for the bad economy and convinced most (he is very good at that) that it was Bush's fault, even though that was nearly three years ago and four years of a Democratic Congress (the ones who actually appropriate for spending). If Obama gets in for a second term (gasp!!), Bush will still be his scapegoat....nothing that happens during his term will ever be his fault. When will this man take responsibility...scary...our Commander in Chief....thinks nothing of getting us into a civil war (Lybia)...what other civil wars will HE decide we should fight? Obama has proven to be anti-business....each time he "punishes" business, the people end up getting the short end with fewer jobs....and he puts another nail in the coffin of capitalism and business growth...which are the only ones, besides government, that provide jobs! Obama idea of job growth is socialism.....there were other countries that thought that way....

NO, Obama said he had "Fun" speaking with Merkel. Of course Arafat is deceased, I was just using examples. Our Pres. actually awarded the Freedom Medal to Merkel last year, but did not present it until this year. Do you think it was his own idea, I think not. She deserves it, but unfortunately is losing popularity in her own country due to many issues including the bail out of Greece.
Criticing grammer or puncuation does not provide meaningful dialogue.

He should be concerned because we are at the beginning stages of the double dip now that the Federal Reserve has reached its limit on monetary policy.

The Republican party's indecisions on what to do about the 1929 great depression, now, is another repeat of not having a plan to prevent this Nation out of another great depression, .
Their same actions and policies against the people are same they took in the 1929 great depression, Manufacturing jobs needed to get our economy and the GDP building back. Their plans are nothing more than creating another disaster, thereby destroying the stability of where we are now.
The total National Debt already at $12.0 trillion dollars. The total National Debt did not cause the 2007 deep recession but it is necessary for the good of this Republic to spend money in preventing the affects of the recession from causing a “great depression.“
The crisis conditions we were in, happened before President Obama took office, At this time, the criticism we hear is “government spending is out of control and where all of the jobs that President Obama promised after his spending? I ask where are the private enterprise sectors who should be stepping up, creating jobs here, without being subsidized. While at the same time, what are the USA consumers doing to help create manufacturing jobs here, while continuing to have a $48.2 billion dollar trade deficit per month with the global corporate monopolies?

tobadgop, thanks for the "Fan."

I cannot accept the "dirty tactics" being used by the opponents of President Obama and apparently trying to put this Republic in another great depression
There is too much misinformation and untruths put out by the opponents of President Obama.
The voters have their work “cut out” for them in the 2012 elections if they are
concerned about the continued recovery of this Republic. It took many years to lose our manufacturing jobs and our middle class and the Republicans apparently are wanting to continue busting the unions and depress the American workers to the
"third world" status.

The crisis conditions were created after he took office. His Stimulus did not create any substantial job increases ... only temporary jobs at a cost of $220,000 per job. The cash for clunkers and first time buyer programs were abject failures that only exacerbated the public debt. You can't take on so much debt that all taxes are used to pay the interest on the debt. See Greece and 9 other countries nearing bankruptcy and insolvency. We are close to that financial disaster. Private enterprise cannot create jobs when that lack confidence in the President's fiscal policies. Manufacturing jobs left because companies could not pay the higher wages, overwhelmed by the restrictions and regulations, and now the job killing Obamacare. It is very alarming that the President does not recognize the double dip inflation and the pending Depression. Some would suggest that a Depression is his objective.

zmanusmc, your denial of the "time line" related to the crisis events does not "match up" with the true facts. What you say has already proven wrong and the voters who care for this Republic are wise to the negative tactics used against President Obama.
Why did you not mention the 2007 deep recession and the the crisis conditions which required Bush/Cheney and Paulson to "beg" for the unfunded $700 billion dollars, in September, 2008 to bail out the fraudulent "private" financial systems, when the total National Debt had already been doubled to $11 trillion dollars and Bush's FY budget and his more than a trillion over budget did not end until the last day of Sept 2009.
To give credit, even.George W. has admitted that conditions were such that if the financial systems had filed it would have "caused a world wide great depression."
Therefore your wishful thinking to blame President Obama for the conditions that were present before he was elected, does not meet the facts.

Reaganite60, "Reaganomics" it certainly did not put this Republic on the "road to prosperity.."
The Republicans and the Tea Party want to take any government control out of private enterprise ways of doing business. Yet, why is it true that when there is not the "proper watch" over the private enterprise systems they have caused this Republic to get into a recession or a great depression? In other words each time the Republicans have been in power, this Republic has been financially and economically destroyed. The last administration was the worst in leaving the total National Debt more than doubled and leaving with the many unfinished crisis issues.
Since the Republicans are always wanting the private enterprise systems to come through for the good of this Republic, then where are they for putting the US people to work? Can you say "global economy"?

Mixed economy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_economy
There is not one single definition for a mixed economy,[2] but the definitions always involve a degree of private economic freedom mixed with a degree of government regulation of markets.

How many of the people on this board have an idea of how far the decrease could go and what the conditions would be when the bottom has possible been reached?
the private capitalist have taken or have not taken along with the leadership of our politicians that have caused or allowed this Republic to go through our latest changes, setting up the conditions we are now having to deal with.

Now that this Republic has been put in the conditions of "class warfare" and on the verge of another "great depression" by the "controlling capitalist and the lobbied congress," every policy tried to prevent the conditions of another great depression, brings out the favorite words of the "guilty." Those words, Socialism/Socialist have become prevalent again, by the people in favor of the forced "class warfare."

AFrosty1, Yes, it would be very nice if Pesident Obama had the money to fight through his opposition to his doing anything to stabilize all of the crisis conditions that this country is in.
The "jobs situation" has gotten really complicated since the US has gotten into the global economy and you should already be aware of the negative effects this has caused on our manufacturing middle class workers.
What are the private global corporate monopolies and the US consumers doing to recreate jobs here in the US to prevent another great depression?
We already know what the president's opponents are doing to hinder the needed recovery. After the eight years of the last administration's more than doubling the total National Debt to $12.0 trillion dollars, they now want to suddenly shut off the "big government's" necessy spending tor stabilizing the 2007 deep recession and helping get the "private sectors" to bring their manufacturing plants back into the USA.

Obama has no clue and feels none of the pain that we as Americans do. He continues to live the good life spending as much as he can on himself and Michelle. The way he constantly talks about giving billions to other countries and how we need to nation build everywhere else but here in America shows he has a major disconnect, Mr President we are beyond broke we are busted in debt up to our and our children's eyeballs. Wake up sir Gas has more than doubled since you took office just 2 and a half years ago and it is killing America. But then you did say "Under My plan the price of energy will necessarily skyrocket". This is one time you kept your word among all the other lies you have spouted. You sir don't deserve another term you in fact don't deserve the term you are serving. Politicians--all of them--lie every day. They want votes. You know it. I know it. The American people know it. And they all live the good life. They went for the job , in large part, for the good life. That doesn't mean SOME of them don't feel the pain we feel. Believe me, Boehner and Cantor et al are worth much more (in personal assets) than Mr. Obama and as far as I can see, they feel nothing, care nothing about the working poor. Their biggest concern right now is those tax breaks they get, and please, Lord, don't let anyone take them away. I need a new yacht and promised my kids a bigger swimming pool at our vacation home in Hawaii.

You can sit with blinders on or open up your eyes to the real killers of the American Dream. That my friend would be the CEO's of all the Fortune 500 companies that have for the past 40 years taken their companies out of the USA and set up shop in the 3rd world countries for cheap labor and fast dollars. Regan thought that the Mom & Pop businesses were going to be the saving grace of the country. Guess what? It didn't work! These small businesses could not afford to pay living wages to help Americans buy homes or keep food on the table. Most of us found ourselves working 2 and 3 jobs just trying to make ends meet. All the talking heads on TV and in the news refuse to even address this thought. Untill we as Americans whole these CEO's accountable and demand changes nothing is going to get any better. Right now is a time for us to strike! Japan has been hit with a devesting blow and may be more years than anybody expect before they can bring their country back to economic power. Automobile production has stopped over there. We need to step up production in the country to meet the demand. That alone could produce thousands of jobs. Not just to the Auto industry but to all the businesses that service the auto industry.

okay... so help me out here. You have people saying over and over again on here that 9.1 is a horrible national unemployment level. Hey, I won't argue that it's not desirable. It isn't. However, when they say it's worse than the Great Depression, where much of the thirties and the opening years of the forties, in the US, saw unemployment in the 20% range, you really have to wonder how they consider these arguments to be valid. Can anyone tell why 9% now is worse than 20+% then?

I assure you the current figures are really much higher and more in line with the 20 to 25% range. Add that to the 25 percent that has never worked and has always lived off our backs and the real unemployment rate is closer to 45 to 50%. Millions of People have just given up looking and are not even reported anymore. Our country can not survive much longer like this and Obama doesn't know which way is up or down and doesn't seem to care.

Well, Captainad seems to have all the stats. Maybe he has the inside score. I'll give him this--the unemployment numbers ARE higher than reported but I think 50% is a tad exaggerated. Now, if the wealthy would REALLY create jobs instead of saying they are, or will as soon as the "uncertainty" of the economy is certain, we might see a different picture. These CEOs are holding their money close to the vest while, at the same time, their customer service has dropped to an all-time low because there just aren't enough workers in their stores (or on the phone lines) to offer the service that customers want and need. Ergo, long-time customers don't patronize their stores. Sales drop, and oh my, they ask, "Why did we have such a lousy quarter?"
