Target Pressured To Refrain From Political Donations

First Posted: 06/07/11 07:41 PM ET Updated: 08/07/11 06:12 AM ET

There are many fronts in the battle to rein in unlimited corporate spending on political campaigns. One involves using shareholder groups to pressure companies to adopt policies that prohibit such donations.

Activists this week are taking aim at Target Corporation, where shareholders on Wednesday are meeting for the first time since the company became the poster child for political-donation blowback. Facing widespread criticism and calls for a boycott, Target was forced to apologize in August after it donated $150,000 from its treasury to a group that ran an ad for a candidate in the Minnesota governor's race who was an outspoken opponent of gay rights.

Target reviewed and revised its policy on political contributions after that incident. Mike Dean, executive director of Common Cause Minnesota, said the Minneapolis-based company took some positive steps, such as requiring the trade associations to which it contributes not to spend its money on campaign contributions.

But Dean said that the new rules, which still allow spending directly from its corporate treasury, aren't specific enough. "Target has really failed to learn the true lessons from this controversy," he told HuffPost.

As a result, citizens' lobby Common Cause, the United Steelworkers Union and the pro-gay-rights Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh have combined forces to demand at the Target shareholder meeting in the city on Wednesday that the company stop spending any of its corporate funds on political campaigns. And they have brought big gun to Western Pennsylvania: a trustee of a $40 billion public-employee pension fund.

Ever since the Supreme Court's dramatic Citizens United ruling in early 2010 freed companies to spend as much as they want on political advertising, New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, a trustee of the New York City Employee Retirement System, has been lobbying companies to choose to refrain from doing so. He's had success with companies such as Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley.

On Tuesday, de Blasio sent a letter to the New York City comptroller about Target. He suggested that the fund withhold its support from Target directors "in the absence of a change in policy on political spending."

"The company's experience in political spending, and the lack of effective reforms taken by the company after the controversy surrounding the company's 2010 corporate political spending make the company a leading candidate to receive a shareholder resolution regard political spending from the funds," de Blasio wrote.

Dean said activists will be at Wednesday's shareholder meeting in full force. Inside the meeting, which is being held in a new Target store in Pittsburgh, activist shareholders intend to question Target executives about their policies. Outside, there will be a rally. The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET and will be webcast to the public.

Target's policy continues to take a toll, costing the company a sweet deal earlier this year. Pop phenom Lady Gaga decided against an exclusive Target special edition of her latest album on account of the company's continued political activity.

Dean said corporate spending in elections "is bad for our democracy" and he said Target, of all companies, should be aware of "the reputational risk posed by this type of involvement."

Shareholders, he said, should ask: "What is the real reward that Target gets out of making them?" -- and then ask if corporate political donations are worth the possible downsides.

The country would be better off if Lobbyists were prohibited from Washington and big corporations and unions were prohibited from campaign contributions.
All forward their private agendas and those are not necessarily what is good for the American citizen, however their large contributions outweigh the contribution and effort you and I may make.

So what happened at this meeting? Come on HuffPo. Follow up on your story!

We used to do most of our grocery shopping at Target as well as buying kid clothes, home decor items, toys etc. at Target. It would be no exaggeration to say that we spent thousands per year.

Target mgmt. We will start to shop at your stores again when you stop donating money to fascist politicians.

I haven't shopped in Target for nearly a year now. Previously, we visited Target several times a month---and spent thousands of dollars a year. I honestly dont miss it.

This is what happens when you hire "focus on the family" christians to run a once trendy and chic retailer and then bite the hand that fed you. ....

Target ought to put out a statement saying that they'll refrain from political donations when the groups opposing them do the same. What a joke, it would be hilarious were it not so sad.

SCOTUS decision on Citizens United ring a bell? Yeah, so here's a perfect example of why it's one of the biggest blows to democracy in history. I think people didn't get it when it happened (and still don't)

We're owned. Get used to it. And it's only gonna get worse if it's not remedied.

Let's just get rid of all corporate lobbyists on Capitol Hill and not allow corporations to donate to campaigns at all, just private citizens. Wow, then the country would go back to being a government FOR the people BY the people, not a country for corporate interests. Wasn't that what our founding fathers were trying to do, anyway?

I started boycotting Target since last fall when I found out they contributed money to Michelle Bachmann. It has been hard but I actually don't miss going there anymore and I have been trying to buy from local and small retailers.

I do as well. There is no excuse for anyone to support that awful woman and Target knows it. If they want to make deals with the devil that affects me negatively, well then, I don't have to cooperate by shopping with them.

Don't stop shopping there because a bully says for you too.

I have a thought. Let what ever corporation donate as much as they want but the politician or group they donate to has to post very clearly and out loud who gave them money. Say politician Bob Smith is on ABC talking. Underneath in a scrolling fashion it will need to say "Sponsored by......" continually and in legible font size.

Since 1997 Target has given almost $300 Million to community schools in every community that has a Target store. Also, Target donates around 5 percent of its pre-tax operating profit; it gives over $3 million a week to the communities in which it operates.

Target supported a pro-business group that supported Tom Emmer who was interested seeing the corporate tax rate in Minnesota cut to help spur our local economy. Emmer also happens to be against gay-marriage as matter of personal principal (which matches a majority of Minnesotans opinions). While I don't agree with the anti-gay marriage stance I do agree with cutting corporate taxes here to help grow our local economy. Right now Minnesota has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the United States.

Either way, Emmer lost and we got Dayton and Target will still continue to be a pillar of the community.

You heard wrong. Hitler was a socialist leftist -- as far from conservative as one can get. Try not to paint yourself in a corner with your re-writting of history.

One reason I no longer give to my employee PAC. Corporate campaign contributions can be stopped if individuals STOP contributing to their employee PACs. Where do you think corporations get the money to donate?
12:54 PM on 06/08/2011
Great idea protesting Target.

Of course it could never impact the thousands of low and mid-income employees that work for Target, huh?

Great idea, Libs.

Whenever you hear there is a boycott, you can be certain which side is doing the boycotting.

So where are you going to shop.. walmart who donates million to Red (GOP) politicians all the time. Target has been one of the Blue companies for years. Unfortunately one stupid individual who works for Target put money on the wrong guy. This is not the track record of this company.
