China Overtakes U.S. As Top Energy Consumer: Report

China Us Energy Consumption

ROBERT BARR   06/ 8/11 11:15 AM ET   AP

LONDON — Global energy consumption rose in 2010 at the fastest pace since 1973, as fast-growing developing nations led a strong rebound from recession, according to a survey released Wednesday.

The overall 5.6 percent rise in consumption saw gains in all regions and all categories of energy, BP PLC said in its 60th annual Statistical Review of World Energy.

Consumption in the world's richest countries grew by 3.5 percent, the most since 1984, bringing it back to the level of a decade ago, BP said. Consumption in developing countries – particularly resource-hungry ones in Asia and South America – logged a 7.5 percent increase.

"By year-end, economic activity for the world as a whole exceeded pre-crisis levels driven by the so-called developing world," said Christof Ruehl, chief economist for BP.

Last year's surge was led by China, which increased its energy consumption by 11.2 percent, according to BP.

That moved China ahead of the United States as the world's biggest consumer of energy, accounting for 20.3 percent of global demand compared with 19 percent for the U.S., the report said.

The International Energy Agency reported in July that China had become the world's biggest energy consumer, though Chinese officials insisted their country still lagged behind the United States.

China was by far the world's largest consumer of coal, taking 48 percent. The United States had the biggest thirst for oil with 21 percent of global demand, double China's consumption.

OK everybody, stop complaining about the US now and go protest and do "direct actions" in China.

Nice knowing you.

According to the AGW crows, even as China produces more, for less, and becomes the world's leader in finance and production the US is supposed to articially crank up prices to protect against AGW and further cripple the economy

Best of luck to my fellow Americans who are in harm's way due to this fire. For those wishing to score political points due to their situation, go to Hell.

An average American still uses 4.4 as much energy as the average Chinese. We still have no right to condemn until we clean up our own back yard.

It was 95 again today. I thought my brain was going to stop functioning when I went for a walk with the kids, and I was checking them for a pulse every two minutes-just in case.

Drill Baby Drill!

Lets drill more oil wells and double our production and then sell it to China.

Oil and Gas are world wide commodities. The price is determined by total world demand. Dont like $5 gas? Then hold on - Gas prices will continue to rise as the Chinese choose to live like Americans - two cars, living in the burbs, driving to work.

No matter how much oil the US can produce, double or quadruple our production - it will not make one cent of difference in the price at the local pump.

Its a fact. You might not like it, but the law of supply and demand is immutable.

it is so true, gas prices at US$4.50 per gallon it is a great deal, in Brazil is US$1.50 a liter, making a gallon about US$6.... in England it is £1.60 a liter making it over £6 a gallon or US$10.20.... soon the USA will be there....and then maybe they will be not driving big SUV's!

China's industrial complex is devastating their own country. Over farming has left something like 50% of arable land a dustbowl. Their rivers are laden with heavy metals and toxic chemicals. The air is so fouled by industrial emissions that it's dangerous to go outside and many large cities. India is no better, their population is absolutely exploding, sucking up natural resources at an ever increasing pace.

Well...it looks like all those "expert energy analysts" who said China's consumption would surpass our own in five years were about five years off...

Who'd a thunk it.

China's consumption? What do you think those factories are producing? More junk for us to buy. Even though its crossed the ocean, its still our consumption.

Just want to point out to everyone here that the Earth is going to be just fine. The only thing that will be truly harmed by this is the parasite (humanity). Nothing to see here.

Yes, I agree. That is the truly unfortunate aspect of this whole debacle. I am vastly more saddened by the loss of the diversity of species than I am for the fate of ours.

According to biologists, we are already in a human-driven period of mass extinction. At some point we are going to screw up our biosphere and bio-chain so badly that we will witness a collapse in our own natural life support systems. Then insects will rule the world!

The only solution is Al Gore's solution - revenge of the Luddites!

Turn off your elect, park the car, turn off the heat/ac at your house, reduce calorie intake, and pray to your Mother Gaia that she will heal the planet. Ignore that the Chinese are building a new coal power plant every month. Just listen to Al Gore - reduce carbon and live in a cave!
The return of the B.C. society will be soon!

Al Gore lives in a fine home which he weatherizes and powers with wind energy over the grid. I do this too. It's easy to be carbon neutral.

Having witnessed the consequences of an A.D. society, a little bit of B.C. might be good. Hopefully science can show us the ideal blend.
