Elephants Invade Indian Town, Chaos Ensues (PHOTOS)

Wild elephants apparently went on a deadly rampage in southern India, killing a man, damaging property, and injuring others.

The pachyderms "attacked" the city of Mysore in India's Karnataka state, but were eventually tranquillized according to the AP. Hundreds are apparently killed every year in India when these animals wander into urban areas.

Footage of the elephant goring a man was broadcast on New Delhi Television, according to the AP. There are photos of the incident in the slideshow below.

The two elephants were eventually tranquilized and chained to other elephants in order to keep them from freeing themselves and continuing their rampage.

India Elephant Rampage

A wild elephant attacks a vehicle on a street in Mysore, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Wednesday, June 8, 2011. News reports say two wild elephants have gone on a rampage and government officials are trying to tranquilize the animals. Every year hundreds of people across India die when wild animals wander into cities as their natural habitats shrink and they have to range farther for food. (AP Photo)

Elephants "invade" town? "Humans Suffocate Elephant Habitat; Elephants Fight Back" would be more appropriate.

1 billion Indians and counting. How many elephants are there? You could fit all the elephants of the world into a quarter of a football stadium, the same isn`t true with the human.
Go elephants go, cull some.

There are 470,000-690,000 elephants in the world.

A quarter of a football stadium?

Er, no.

I really did not need to see the security guard being gored to death by the elephant. Reminds me how Republicans are doing the same to this country.

The harmony of nature the Earth enjoys will become a thing of the past if we don't control our population. But eventually it'll come back once Earth is no longer able to sustain our pillaging of her and she drives us into extinction.

control our population? Argh. The world could fit into the size of New England with the same population density as Manhattan. The human species can quadruple its population and still be ok.

Oh that's just a great idea!! What about the very limited food supply? Guess we could just eat each other. What about all the waste? Fuel? Natural resources? Getting along? People all over the world must stop having so many children. To suggest otherwise is just crazy.

Judging from their size these were "teen age" animals most likely males w/to much testosterone...as w/humans looking for and causing trouble!

How much do you love it that the town's name rhymes with "eyesore?" I only hope the elephants trampled on my Citi bank phone operators and computer help techs.

Looking at the size of these elephants, they are obviously juveniles, who according to various documentary have a tendency to act out when then are no large Bull elephants to keep them in check…makes you wonder where the Bull elephants are in this region?
01:55 PM on 06/11/2011
It's not large bulls that keep the herd in line--it's matriarchs. These definitely look like juveniles, and males are forced out of the herd when they mature. Perhaps there's just no place else for them to go.
