Titanic II Sinks On Maiden Voyage, 99 Years After The Anniversary

Titanic Ii Sinks

It was bound to happen eventually.

Mark Wilkinson, the 44-year-old owner of the aptly named 16-foot cabin cruiser named "Titanic II," found himself clinging to the side of the boat as it slowly sank into the harbor. According to AFP, the boat began to sink as he reentered the harbor following a successful fishing trip.

It was the vessel's maiden voyage, though Wilkinson had bought the boat second hand. It cost him £1,000 (about $1,640).

"It's all a bit embarrassing - I'm fed up with people asking me if I hit an iceberg," he told the Sun.

You can see pictures of the sinking ship here, from the Sun.

Wilkinson even had to be rescued by the coast guard, according to AFP. A large hole had opened up in the fiberglass hull as the ship came to dock in West Bay, Dorset in Great Britain.

April 15, 2012 will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, a disaster that claimed 1,517 lives.

OMG - apparently they didn't see the movie...Titanic II...

The Coast Guard had to save him? Dude, if you can't swim that short distance to the shore in the background you shouldn't be on a boat, or even at a beach. And yeah, that's definitely not 16 ft. My 18 ft open-bow bay cruiser is probably shorter than the cabin on that boat...

Most likely the 16 should have been meters (just over 40 feet). Even at that, the superstructure could have been enough instability to cause it to capsize.

If there was one thing I would NEVER name my boat...........

1. A "16-foot cabin cruiser"? I call BS right there. Most canoes are about 16 feet; a rowboat is 12.

2. How can this have been its "maiden voyage" if it was purchased "second hand"?

3. Since this vessel apparently shared nothing at all with the original Titanic except the name and the fact that it sank, why don't you give equal time to the demise of my poor little rubber duck, "Lusitania," in the bathtub last week?

We will, of course, refrain from asking how your rubber duckie came to be torpedoed.

I had a kayak sink because it hit a rock. If this is news, why won't HuffPo talk about me?
