Danielle Steel, J. K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer might be rich and powerful, but their work could never come close to the originality and the beauty present in the writings of Angelou, Morrison or even Allende...

As far as "power" goes, this list is a great start. If "influence", I would add Alice Munro, E. Annie Proulx, Ursala Le Guin and Margaret Atwood.
