Women Steal $600 Of Gouda And Blue Cheese Wheels From Oregon Whole Foods

First Posted: 06/08/11 01:36 PM ET Updated: 08/08/11 06:12 AM ET

Two women stole about $600 worth of gourmet cheese from a Bend, Oregon Whole Foods by simply asking for a box and walking out of the store. Their bounty included a $300 wheel of nine-month aged Gouda, and two wheels of blue cheese worth $270.

It seems almost too easy. The women walk into the store, pick up the Gouda wheel and ask for a box, which an employee provides. They box up the wheel, snatch two wheels of blue cheese, one walks to the register and the other leaves with the dairy.

Despite being caught on camera, the women are still at large, though police are investigating leads. So if anyone in the Bend, Oregon area happens to attend a party with a serious amount of cheese...

See the video below of the cheese heist.

Considering the prices at Whole Foods, we're probably talking about 10 lbs of cheese, max.

As a former cheesemonger, those prices seem about right.

Let's assume the aged Gouda was one of the large size that weigh about 22 lbs. That'd be $13 and change per lb., which is not a bad price at all. Wheels of blue cheese are generally much smaller. Most of them run around 5-6 lbs. If two wheels went for $270, that'd be $27 a lb. at 5 lbs. per wheel, or $22.50 per lb. at 6 lbs. per wheel. That's a pricey item, but there were definitely things in that range even when I was a cheesemonger in the late 90s. And Roquefort, the king of blues, is even more expensive than that.

When they get caught, they should be forced to eat the wheel. Hilarity ensues.

Hmmm...wonder if this is in any way related to those two women who stole dozens of deororants in Florida? What's next after the motherload of cheese heists? Guess we'll be reading that two women have stolen scores of laxatives.

I think about doing that every time I see those... And I rarely eat cheese. Something about a giant block makes the inner mouse in me think "thats ridiculous, I need it."

Compulsive behavior prompted by cheese addiction? Yes, cheese is addictive and contains morphine which scientists believe fortifies the bond between mother cow and calf. See http://freefromharm.org/food/health-nutrition/addicted-to-cheese-heres-why/.

They didn't mean to steal $600 worth of cheese, they thought the cubes were free samples and had two each.

Someone also stole a $150 bottle of Dom Perignon from the Bend Costco so it must have been one heck of a party.
