The Washington Post:

Borders Group Inc. on Thursday asked the bankruptcy court's permission to close the following 51 stores in order to satisfy a condition of its bankruptcy financing.

Borders says it doesn't actually want to close the stores because that could make it impossible to sell them. And it is negotiating both with its lenders and with landlords to keep the majority of the stores open.

Considering how slow their wi-fi is in their cafes (dial-up, most likely), that aspect will not be missed. However, I don't like the idea of yet another cycle of empty real estate sitting unused, all those jobs vanishing into nothingness...oh, that I will not like. But their crappy wi-fi leaves much to be desired.

We have to stop running corporations as if they were cash cows to be stripped. No wonder our economy is in the toilet.

I used to love Borders. Until the stores started going downhill. I'd walk in and it was just a bunch of junky displays and books in complete disorder. There were never enough staff members and the ones they had were all creepy. I won't miss Borders.

Just recently (May 10, 2011), Lucasfilm, which owned Star Wars, and Random House annouced through their press release that the entire library of Star Wars fiction book titles under Del Ray and Bantam Sprecta imprints will be available on ebook as of June 28, 2011 as well as future Star Wars novels.

Many Star Wars book fans were thrilled, whom they clamoring for it through their devices like Kindle. So, it's another blow to the retail market for mass paperback and hardcover books, now they more unlikely to go to bookstores in buying Star Wars book titles. It's the last thing Borders needs. Even if it miraculously kept all 51 profitable bookstores open, it doesn't change the overall changing trends, which is changing reading consumption from print to digital.

If they can't keep *airport* stores open, they're history.
Which is good for independent bookstores, but I feel for the employees since I doubt they will all be able to find jobs in another bookstore.

Shame as I like going into a bookstore and touching books...and horrible thing as many Borders employees are highly educated and like to talk books....guess the world only values minimum wage box packers.

I hate to see book stores close too, but I like this news, why? Because it mean more business for local book stores

There are a number of Borders in my area and none are on the list, but I fear for their future. I like Borders okay, and they have nice stores, but they chose the lousiest locations; inconvenient and out of place. My wife and I go to bookstores often, but it is not usually our destination. We combine our book shopping with other activities. The problem is that there are not the type of other destinations near Borders that attract us. If we want to go to a Borders, we must make a separate trip. Someone dropped the ball in location selection.

Borders and Barnes & Noble were always some kind of hipster/yuppie type of place. Like the Starbucks of entertainment- overpriced but somehow gave the patrons a sense of "cool" (even though they aren't). Good riddance to these stores.

Hey Borders, how is this hopey-changey thing working out for you?

The past couple of months I've started going to Borders again as a sign of support.
I hate to see any bookstore close--indie, box, or libraries.
