The Washington Post:

But an aide to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday that the lawmaker stands by his vow to block any candidate. Late last month, McConnell led 44 senators in a letter to the White House calling for structural changes to the bureau. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) has accused GOP opponents of discriminating against Warren because she is female, but McConnell's complaints are much broader.

They only call it Class War when we fight back.

It's not sexist McConnel and the rest of the GOP will block anyone who is not as crooked and bought as all of them are. Warren has proven herself to be an advocate of the people and of fair honest business practices, somethiong I think the GOP finds offensive.

Here's an idea. Why don't we make the 2012 election a referendum on Mitch McConnell?

No, for once I agree with McConnell. His opposition to Warren is not because of her gender.

It's worse than that. McConnell and his Republican colleagues are bought-and-paid-for lackeys of the "too big to fail" banksters who are terrified of anyone like Warren who would get in the way of their preying on the American consumer.

Good piece in the NYT regarding this here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/11/opinion/11nocera.html?_r=1&src=tptw

Two highlights:
1. "...they portray Warren as a polarizing ideologue bent on creating an agency that, as Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, put it recently, 'could be a serious threat to our financial system.' How, precisely, an agency that tries to keep financial consumers from being gouged threatens the system is something no one ever explains. (Unless, of course, gouging consumers is central to bank profitability. Hmmm...)"

2. "In politics, there are certainly times when compromise is the right approach. But this is not one of those times. The agency needs to begin its life unafraid to do its job, which won’t happen if the White House backs down now.... Yes, the nomination would spark a partisan fight, and, yes, there is a high likelihood that she would not win confirmation. But it would redound nicely to the president’s advantage. Americans would be able to see, in the starkest way imaginable, who’s trying to help them — and who’s not."

Yeah- he would vote for Leona Helmsley, if she were still alive, after all. I just know he would.

Of course their opposition is not sexist. They cannot tolerate a super intelligent, honest person
that cannot be paid off. Scares the bejeebers out of them. A bunch of weasels.

I believe Mitch, he has a long history of aversion to intelligence to support his assertion.

Yes of course they will block anyone who is looking out for the consumer's ( you and me) welfare.

Don't we already know... the only people they care about are the big businesses...oh except when they are in the midst of failure...then let them di e too...

Funny, if it wasn't so destructive...

I absolutely agree with the present lot of misogynist Republicans! They have every reason to hate and block Elizabeth Warren's confirmation:

1) She is a woman!
2) She is a woman with brains!
3) She is a woman with brains and abilities!
4) She is a woman with brains and abilities and cares about the average citizen!

My goodness how dare we have a person who actually serves the interests of the common man? Let's PLEASE vote these cavemen out the next time around!!!

For once I actually agree with McConnell. The GOP opposition to Dr. Warren has more to do with her pro-consumerism than her gender. Anyone less than a GOP sycophant doesn't stand a chance at getting confirmed for this post, let alone someone with actual bonafides, ethics, integrity and radar for BS....

I think Mitch has a point here. It's not so much sexist as it is just more blatant GOP stupidity and wanting to defeat anyone that the President is for - no matter how qualified they may be.

They hate all smart people.

They are scared to death she would do her job... they have to stop her at all costs! Can't have her be effective! Banks are banking on this failing... they need to keep bilking the American public, Congress needs to keep supporting them bilking us... Congress doesn't work for us, they work for the bankers!
