Obama's Bin Laden Polling Bump Fades

Obama

First Posted: 06/10/11 02:15 PM ET Updated: 08/10/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- A batch of new national polls released this week share a similar theme: All show a fade of the modest "bounce" in President Barack Obama's approval ratings that occurred just after the killing of terrorist Osama bin Laden in early May. For the moment, however, HuffPost Pollster's trend estimate -- based on all readings of Obama's approval -- remains slightly higher now than it was in late April and throughout much of 2010.

Over the last week, seven new national surveys -- from Fox News, CBS News, CNN/Opinion Research Corporation, Reuters/Ipsos, Quinnipiac University, ABC News/Washington Post and DailyKos/PPP -- have all shown remarkably similar patterns in Obama's job approval rating. With one exception (the Reuters/Ipsos survey), the slight increases evident in surveys conducted in mid-May were gone by June.

2011-06-10-Blumenthal-sevennewsurveys2.png

Plotted on a chart, the data show the same rise and fall on most of the surveys in the past two months:

2011-06-10-Blumenthal-chartsevennewpolls.png

Notice, however, that this chart includes the bold, black HuffPost Pollster standard trend line. This estimate is an analysis of all available polls using local regression, a statistical procedure that creates a smoothed line when data points are scattered. The line is designed to resist "chasing" noise in poll results (which may sometimes be the result of random sampling error or "house effects" and differences in methodology rather than real movement in the polls).

In this case, the trend line appears to mostly ignore the apparent spike in many of these surveys in mid-May and indicates a continuing upward trend. Five of six most recent polls (again, all but Reuters/Ipsos) now plot just below the trend line.

The smooth upward trend estimate line remains, partly because the two daily tracking polls have not demonstrated the same rise and fall pattern in May and June as the other national surveys. These far more frequent daily trackers have a greater impact on HuffPost Pollster's trend estimate. The Rasmussen automated poll rose after the bin Laden killing and has remained relatively stable since, while the Gallup Daily tracking poll showed a much deeper dip than the others in mid-April. Both show Obama's approval rating remaining at a slightly higher level now than before the successful bin Laden mission.

2011-06-10-Blumenthal-chartdailytrackers.png

There are times when the standard HuffPost Pollster trend line can be too smooth and miss real changes in public opinion. We can adjust the local regression to make it more sensitive.

Doing so in this case appears to provide a better illustration of the recent trends across all of the surveys. The more sensitive red trend estimate line in the chart below, for example, shows both the rise in mid-May and the modest decline since.

2011-06-10-Blumenthal-chartmoresensitive.png

Even our more sensitive estimate still puts Obama's approval at 48 percent, which is very close to the heights it reached in Jan. 2011 following the president's State of the Union address and his speech after the Phoenix shootings. Obama's approval was lower throughout the summer and fall of 2010. Our trend estimate showed Obama's approval at roughly 45 percent from August through late Nov. 2010.

2011-06-10-Blumenthal-bigchartapproval.png

Of course, these readings are just a current snapshot, and the downward trend may continue. Or the overall political environment may have changed since the 2010 elections in a way that slightly benefits Obama.

But these data strongly imply that the successful bin Laden commando raid has not radically shifted overall perceptions of Obama's job performance.

One explanation is that foreign affairs, terrorism and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are not dominating the our news and political environment the way they did just a few years ago.

The bin Laden breakthrough did alter perceptions of Obama on his handling on those issues. Data from the USA Today/Gallup survey conducted in mid-May showed a big spike in Obama's ratings on terrorism (+15 percentage points), the situation in Afghanistan (+6) and foreign affairs (+5) but slight declines on the economy (-2) and the federal budget deficit (-1). And since news about the bin Laden story remained on the minds of Americans during much of the month of May, these shifts probably helped fuel the momentary bump in Obama's overall rating.

2011-06-10-Blumenthal-Gallupobamaissues.png

Obama's approval rating on the economy (37.7 percent), as tracked in the HuffPost Pollster trend estimate chart, remains much lower than his overall rating (48.9 percent). Thus, as economic news dominates, and especially as more Americans begin to hear mostly bad news about the economy, Obama's ratings may well see further declines.

Here is a list of things that our President has 'begun' to tackle.  Some have met huge stumbling blocks (aka - The Party of NO) but many have been implemented - or are in the process.

he knew where bin laden was back in sept the year before but he waited till the election cycle started. everything he is doing is to make himself look good for re-election. if he gets voted in again either he stole it and cheated or people are just stupid

Maybe obama can find another country to illegally invade, in the middle of the night, and kill some more of its' patriots for better ratings !!! In fact, he should personally go on another death mission in a ski-mask; I'm sure he has many ski-masks left over from his "Chicago" days of crime !

The smell of panic is emanating from the WH. Obama thought he could "deal" with republicans who clearly stated their only goal was to prevent him from being re-elected in 2012. So he triangulated and appeased the lying republicans and did diddly about the main problem, JOBS, while falling into the "deficit is the most important issue" lie. I have studied economics and I appear to know more about it than Obama and his advisors. Paul Krugman, who knows a lot about economics (he has a Nobel prize for this brilliant thinking about economics) has been warning Obama and his bozo advisors like little Timmy Geithner, Larry (women are inferior) Summers and refuses to push for the appointment of Elizabeth Warren to a job to help us little folks aka the middle class and poor. It is a good thing Obama is President and does not have to go through body scanning to get on an airplane. I fear the scan would expose a lack of a spine.

You knew it was coming, America has short memories. I remember Bush had poll numbers into the high 80s after the first Gulf war and he lost the next election to Clinton. It's good for awhile but people come back to earth and the every day problems of bankruptcy, lack of jobs, thoughts of losing their homes, stocks and 401K sinking. Reality sets back in and the working man struggles while the politicians live high and mighty and have no worries except to figure out what lie will work on you to get them re-elected.

You are right about the birth certificate issue. Nothing being said now but just wait until the campaigning gets into full swing. We all know the democrats can not run without using personal attacks. This time it will backfire on them. The was one of McCains failures . He refused to use negative campaigning. Whoever gets the republican nomination will wait to see the democrats first move and then go into full attack mode. Obama has too many questionable areas in his life that have gone unanswered. He will not get the free pass from the candidates or the press he enjoyed in 2008. All that has to be done if the issues remain unanswered is to place reasonable doubt in voters minds as to do you really know this man? He will not be able to run on any kind of successful record.

Americans are getting tired of Obama's inaction on jobs too. I had hope that Obama could change the economic picture, at least enough to believe there were factories opening up, jobs would be created, and that TARP money the banks are sitting on would be loaned out to businesses to get inventory and spur the economy. That hopey changey thing’s light is flickering out, and will go out very soon.
09:28 AM on 06/11/2011
Obamas done a lot more for creating jobs than the repubs ever had. So he had a bad month, hell his worst month for job creation is still ten times better than Bush did and you would expect republicans to come along and open up factories when they supported compamies that shipped jobs overseas. Obama has bent over backwards to convince banks and businesses to reinvest the trillions of dollars they are sitting on but they won't. It's not about what he hasn't done...but more about the man himself. The banks and CEO's are both wlling to gamble politically and financially by holding capital and breaking the will of the economy, blame Obama and usher in a repub president who would...make their tax cuts permenant, look the other way while they ship jobs overseas and blame unions and invest millions into lobbying for legislation that would eliminate both unions and minimum wages....if this is what you want, I truely hope you are rich enough to afford the policies you support.

Wow! Bent over backwards? My butt. The only thing Obama's bent over to do is pick up a golf ball and hit it.
10:25 PM on 06/12/2011
What has he done? Why would a business reinvest with all the new regulations being created, the dark cloud of Obamacare that includes all kinds of hidden taxes and regulations. I have a small business and its really scary.

Obama is bad for business. Pure and simple. The business community has not faith in his actions.

The public voted in the Bush gang and then brought in Obama. This country can take a few years of bad leadership but when it continues into the following leader, the staggering begins to turn into a fall. The Clintons did a good job of leadership and if Hilary had been allowed to become America's president, this country would be well on the road to recovery now. Bush listened to his Dad, Obama listens to his advisors. Neither man leads nor really wants to. Bush would make a wonderful, good ole boy in a pick up truck if Dad would leave him alone. Obama just wants to nurture and care for people in other countries and won't open his mouth unless his advisors whisper in his ears. Whoever those advisors are, they are not interested in a recovering America. This will not be printed because any straight talk about Obama seems to be censored on this site.
07:54 AM on 06/11/2011
Common sense and history will only prove Obama will be a one term president. The economy is stalled (never really got started). High fuel prices which adds to the cost of all everyday items. More people losing jobs again as unemployment will continue to rise. The only accomplishment he can claim is a failing heath care bill that will have more people without healthcare insurance then before the bill was passed. Over 1000 companies opted out, rumor has it 30% of this countries companies will drop coverage before 2014 and just pay the fines if it goes into effect. Their is a better chance it will be ruled unconstitutional by the courts. He will be running his campaign on failed policies, high unemployment, failing economy, and an unconstitutional healthcare law. That is what I call a winning combination.
09:33 AM on 06/11/2011
You want to see more job loss?...elect a Republican. Obamas worst month is STILL better than Bush's....most Americans know this.

The problem with your theory is it is harder to hire when the unemployment number is around 4% percent. That group in most part lack education, job skills, lack of drive, drug problems, criminal background, etc. When you have high unemployment companies have the pick of the litter so to speak. Companies can now weedout the ones they do not want and replace them with more qualified people for less money. The incomes will only rise after the unemployment numbers start to get closer to 6 % . Now I have to pay you more and offer more to get labor. One I am trying to keep you from changing jobs if you are any good, and I will be trying to gain employees from steeling from other companies.

You actually believe Corporate America will actually hire with Democrats in control. That would be the first time in the history of this country. They will not hire as long as he is in office. You can call it political sabotage if you want but facts are facts. The old saying money talks and BS walks.
