Sarah Palin and John McCain's Courtship Detailed In Emails

Palin Mccain

NEW YORK -- Long before the glory days of the Republican convention, the exultant crowds greeting them in venues across the country, the sniping and backtalk in the heat of the campaign and the post-defeat blame game, Sarah Palin and John McCain were engaged in a subtle courtship dance, much of which is revealed in the email document dump released today by the state of Alaska.

Months before Senator McCain picked her as his running mate, then-Governor Palin was privately expressing interest in the post. In an email sent on June 4, 2008, her aide Ivy Frye noted that McCain was being pushed to choose Palin for the VP slot.

"The second and third articles I've seen on vp buzz just today," wrote Frye. "Pretty cool."

Earlier, Frye had sent an email to other aides, as well as Palin's husband, Todd Palin, titled "VP Madness in ADN [Anchorage Daily News]." Enclosed was a write-up of another article suggesting that Palin had advanced to round two in the VP horserace.

And back in February of that year, another top aide, Frank Bailey, sent around a San Francisco Chronicle piece that referred to Palin as "Alaska's young, hot, Vogue-posing, female Republican governor" who "could become the popular favorite to be Sen. John McCain's running mate."

Later that summer, the feelers became more intense. Three weeks before McCain made the official announcement, he was already trying to enhance Palin's presence on the national stage -- and give him a boost.

On August 4, 2008, her schedule coordinator Janice Mason emailed her that McCain's spokesman wanted Palin to take part in a national press call on the following Wednesday, adding "it would help the elected official," and requesting that she discuss energy issues.

"I received a call from Charles Adams, Communications Advisor Department for Senator McCain. Mr. Adams was inquiring as to whether or not you would be interested in participating in a National Press Call on Wednesday, 08.06.08. This would be with their National Pool of Reporters. It has very good attendance on calls. It would help the elected official. It would be a total of 15 minutes of your time and would be in regards to Energy. They do these National Press Calls each week. This is tentative at this time depending on your interest to participate. Thanks, Janice."

Palin's less-than-enthusiastic reply - "I could do this, time depending..."

Just two days before McCain's announcement, Larry King's staff wrote to see if Palin would be interested in discussing live via satellite "McCain's VP's choice."

In the days after the announcement, Palin received dozens of emails from excited Alaskans, expressing their pride in their home state heroine along with a few folks who expressed concern that she might be distracted from her gubernatorial duties.

One, Lee Grothe, wrote, "I know that John's only chance obtaining [sic] the Presidency is with you as his running mate." Another email came from Joel Crouch, who wrote, "Me and my partner were praying that we would get another Reagan and then Mccain [sic] nominated you. Perfect Choice. God's Blessing is on you..."

Curse you John McCain for dumping Sarah Palin on us.

I agree. But whatever harm to our nation McCain did by unleashing Sarah on us, pales in comparison with the damage Bush Sr. did by appointing Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. What a disaster Thomas is to decent functioning government and he'll probably be around for a long, miserable time. as well.

the primary reason people should vote is in your post...the SCOTUS.

Ever since 2000, when they reversed their usual 'states rights' platform for decision making in such a transparently "politicized" decision. And thereby gave us George the Younger, named Shrub. Not even a quality Bush.

It does matter.

Citizens United is the last straw, the last unveiling of the plutocrats show.

So, yes, it does matter.
And no matter how many paid forum posters come on here and pretend to be disappointed progressives who just, sadly, 'can't show up to vote with such terrible betrayal that they feel, go vote anyway.

It does matter.

Future history books should note that it was due to John McCain that American politics finally, irrevocably, went all to hel.l.

The problem was John, you did not know the difference between a Running Mate and a Ruining Mate. -So, Palin's lame brain blame falls mainly on McCain.

We in the UK await her announcement with bated breath. It's one thing to carry a fringe group of people along with you and have them hang on your every utterance, it's much more difficult to hoodwink the majority. I'd dearly love to see her debate - she proves time and again she's learned nothing from her experiences of 2008. Run Sarah, RUN! :)

While I appreciate your demand for mindless entertainment from afar, believe me, the actuality if you're an American is a bit worse. 2008 aged me 10 years, especially after the polls rose after the Republican Convention.

I will never forget her speech, because in one gem of a little sentence, she fit in three of the most gigantic lies I've ever heard by saying that Obama would raise taxes on the little mom-and-pop clean coal companies.

However, I must say I did like her outfit, just like all the male attendee septegenerians sporting campaign buttongs saying "We have a hot V.P. candidate!" Disgusting.

The problem with providing you Brits this marvelous cheap entertainment is that she's the scariest person who's ever run on a Presidential ticket, and that's saying quite a bit, as I was an adult when Ronald Reagan ran.

More proof that McCain is, and always has been, a terrible leader. He flips on issues, even those that seem to be foundational beliefs, he has been involved in some seriously questionable situations, incidents and political intrigue.... He has terrible judgment and the proof is in the further damage he did to his party by bringing Sarah Palin out of the woodwork and turning her narcissistic personality loose in the larger public arena... She doesn't help the image of the country one little bit and I think that her scrambling with Bachman (another seriously deficient candidate with major personality problems) is a great example of the diminishing of the GOP... Of course the entire GOP at this point doesn't have much going for it... Boehner, McConnell and co are not leaders either.....

I want to read Obama's emails, don't you? Sign the petition if you want Obama to release all of his emails while he was Senator. I want to know why he voted "present" so many times.

She is indeed a very ambitious and revengeful woman ... will not blink an eye to throw us in too. I Don't want her to 'gotcha us under her bus, right?

The question here is, does making a good celebrity equate to making a good governor (or VP) choice? The answer is obvious especially in hind sight. This was a seriously reckless decision make by GOP (a revealing insight to just how superficial and ill-advised this party is). It should also stand as an example, perhaps the most shining example since Ronald Reagan, or Arnold Schartznegger of just how vulnerable and fragile our system of government is. We have built in the allowance to promote and place absolutely unqualified candidates into positions that can literally DESTROY our nation. Many (I would say most) people vote to spite "personalities" (i.e., political celebrities). It has nothing to do with qualification. It is based SOLEY on rhetoric and deliverance of the rthetoric. It is a very dangerous system we allow in the name of democracy.

I concur with your premise on how or why people vote. It is not the case for everyone though. Some do vote based upon valid assumptions regarding governing skills. And the theory is that the vast numbers (of voters) will create an outcome which will mitigate the, for lack of better terms, strange factor.

What other option, though, is there? We used to have our state Legislators or their designee vote on the President. Before we had the current, indirect direct vote. It is still not completely direct, due to the electoral college. I would not like to go back to that type of decision making process. The process prior to the Twelfth Amendment.
