Sea Shepherd Activists Head To Libya Waters To Stop Illegal Fishing Of Bluefin Tuna

Sea Shepherd Libya Bluefin Tuna

DON MELVIN   06/10/11 04:35 PM ET   AP

ABOARD THE STEVE IRWIN — A boat operated by environmental activists was steaming toward Libyan waters Friday, hoping to stop illegal fishing for bluefin tuna – through confrontation if necessary.

The Steve Irwin, which is owned by the U.S.-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, could enter Libyan waters as early as Friday night, said Locky MacLean, the first mate. There, it will rendezvous with the Brigitte Bardot, a faster, smaller Sea Shepherd boat that is currently tailing two unidentified purse seiners – boats that catch tuna with large nets that they draw closed like purses.

The Brigitte Bardot has searched the region and has reported that 23 purse seiners are now working in the area. Not all, presumably are fishing illegally, however.

The activists will match the names of the vessels against a list of authorized ships prepared by ICCAT – the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas – and direct action will be taken only if Sea Shepherd is certain the boats are fishing without licenses or exceeding their quotas.

While the activists will in theory be operating in a war zone, they do not fear for their safety as a result of the Libyan conflict. That war is not being fought at sea, and Sea Shepherd is keeping NATO, the military alliance conducting the campaign to protect civilians in Libya, aware of its activities.

The nearly 60-meter (195-foot) Steve Irwin carries a helicopter, which will be used to scout for tuna fishermen just north of Libyan waters. The conservation group wants NATO to grant it an exemption from the no-fly zone it is enforcing over Libyan territory so the chopper can also be used to search those waters.

The group believes fishermen may see Libyan waters as safe territory for poaching because inspectors will be loath to enter the area.

The stock of bluefin tuna has been depleted to the point that conservationists fear its collapse to unsustainable levels. The raw meat is highly prized in Japan.

The fish spawn in the Mediterranean before heading out to the North Atlantic.

Nearly 40 activists from Sea Shepherd are on board the Steve Irwin, which is named after the Australian conservationist and TV personality known as the Crocodile Hunter, who died in 2006. MacLean said if need be the Sea Shepherd volunteers will take "direct action" by diving into the water and cutting nets to free the tuna.

The Sea Shepherd activists, most of them volunteers, have no official enforcement powers.

"We're basically citizen observers down there," MacLean said. "Nothing stops us from observing illegalities and enforcing them."

The Steve Irwin left the Sicilian port of Syracuse early Friday.

I think they should head to the waters off Somalia instead. That would make for a great episode on Green TV.

The Somali pirates just need to start killing some endangered species and Sea Shepard would be all over that. Whale Shark Wars perhaps?

So far, the Somali fishing grounds really improved a lot, as the pirates keep international fish thieves away from Somali coastlines. After all, the pirates started kind of like a "green" movement, to protect their coastal fishers, before they discovered, how much money was to be made in the pirate business.

Bluefin tuna are nearly extinct.

Why is it that only a few civilians are concerned enough to actually do something about it? That's pathetic and hardly reflects poorly on these activists, who are doing the only rational thing possible in the face of such wanton destruction of the bluefin tuna.

Why is it that you feel so strongly about it and yet aren't willing to do anything about it except whine on HP about it?http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/wilderness-resources/stories/farm-raised-bluefin-tuna-spawn-controversy. Fyi the surest way to ensure the survival of a species is to make it profitable.

I respect that she stood up for the activists verbally here. She wasn't whining. But I will whine... why did you post a broken link that we can't read?
07:24 AM on 06/14/2011
Oops - hit 'favorite' instead of 'Reply'. Now your whining has a favorite it does not deserve...

Anyway - there is more than one threat to the world that needs attention, and just because someone finds one way to help (maybe the original poster is an environmental lawer - you don't know) does NOT mean they can't have an opinion on another one, like this. You make yourself sound like somebody so stupid you don't understand how many threats there are to our future.

Better watch out for the French Military remember they blew up a green peace boat for messing in the French military affairs.
This so called "Captain" guy needs to taken off the seas anyway, he is a menace. WHen one of his people ends getting killed he'll be responsible no matter what and will end up in prison for manslaughter or worse.
The IMO has many laws and regulations pertaining to harassment on the high seas.

I am not sure about this idea, the Arabs are not eco friendly and do not care if your friends with the Cetaceans. Not one of them has military experience besides a cook, these are not the Japanese. While I appreciate what they do I have never considered Paul Watson exceptionally bright and it would not help their cause if they were killed. The proximity to Sudan and Egypt could also be problematic, the Arab fisherman literally do need their catch to survive and being armed is the norm. Three hikers comes to mind!

The US could stop Japanese whaling if it really wanted to.
Tell Japan not one single product of yours will be allowed
here until you stop whaling.
I think that is what should be done.

I think we could a lot more pressure on them, but they are an economic and military ally and unfortunately probably not likely to happen

I never thought I'd be pro-whaling until I watched Whale Wars.

That being said. Lets watch and see if these people actually fight against illegal fishing.

Whaling is only legal because Japan has bought off a majority of the international whaling commission countries. People like you who confuse "legal" with right are a prime cause of all the corruption in the world that goes on behind the scenes, producing a set of laws that only benefits the large corporations.

Sea Shepherd is doing the *right* thing, even if it's not legal. In the end, when the ecosystem collapses, people who followed the corporate-sponsored laws won't be heroes.

The dedication of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society toward protecting endangered species is truly commendable. Their founder Paul Watson has a long track record of being a strong supporter of animal rights and the environment going back to the founding of Greenpeace. Wishing them a smooth sail ahead.

Not to worry, TunaKeepers.

The Isreali Defence Forces have the absolute (divine) right to neutralize any maritime presence in the Med. Just get word to them that some of the fish in the poachers' nets will go to feed Palestinian orphans in Tripoli.

Problem solved.
