Anthony Weiner To Seek Treatment

Anthony Weiner

Multiple outlets are reporting that Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) intends to seek treatment amid the fallout from controversy that erupted earlier this week when the congressman admitted to having inappropriate online interactions with six women in recent years.

HuffPost's Sam Stein reports:

Weiner's office put out a statement confirming those reports and announcing that he had requested a "short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well."

Earlier reports suggested that Weiner had no immediate intention of resigning. "Congressman Weiner takes the views of his colleagues very seriously and has determined that he needs this time to get healthy and make the best decision possible for himself, his family and his constituents," the statement from his office continued.

The Democratic Party hierarchy demanded on Saturday that Weiner resign for sending online material ranging from sexually suggestive to explicit to several women.

"This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House," Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the party chairwoman, said in a written statement calling for the New York lawmaker to quit.

The House Democratic leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, said Weiner "has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents and the recognition that he needs help. I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of Congress."

Weiner had no immediate reaction.

Before Saturday afternoon's developments, Weiner told reporters in his neighborhood that "I have to redeem myself and I am going to try to get back to work."

Weiner said his conduct involved "personal failings" and that he would try not to let them get in the way of his "professional work."

Wasserman Schultz, Pelosi and others party leaders made their demands one day after Weiner acknowledged that he had exchanged online messages with a Delaware teenager. He said the exchanges involved nothing inappropriate.

His party's leadership had refrained from demanding a resignation for days after Weiner admitted sending lewd photos and messages and at least one X-rated picture to a handful of women around the country over the past three years and then lying about it.

Weiner is married to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Abedin is pregnant with the couple's first child. She is traveling with Clinton in Africa until the middle of next week.

A recent poll of registered voters in Weiner's New York City district found that 56 percent said he should stay in office while 33 percent said he should leave.

Pelosi has asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate whether Weiner used any government resources. He has said he does not believe he did.

Before Saturday's developments, at least nine House members and three senators said Weiner should resign.

He has repeatedly said he would not.

Weiner said earlier Saturday that his wife "is doing well" and that she "is a remarkable woman who is working very hard."

Gee, If he'd only put as much effort into his political career as he did with his extra-curricular activities he might actually have helped our nation instead of becoming a nation-wide joke.

IMO, he should step down. I would not vote for someone who doesn't have the common sense to avoid making poor choices like these.

WEINER SET TO GET TREATMENT FOR HIS WIENER...personally I would change my name.

Weiner's progressive voice is needed in the House of Representatives. I live in Arizona, and I have no representation in the Congress. The Democratic leadership should have said that Weiner's messages were the family's business and then returned to governing. The Republicans certainly aren't doing any governing. So far, all they've done is sit in the corner and howl.

Yep, people like John Boehner are fake crying like a fool and zero is getting done. When I see Boehner on tv I wish I could kick him in his family jewels. One time he even came off of the podium saying I don't believe I just said that. Well John and Republican/Teabugger leadership. We don't believe you say that ish either.

Protecting Children On the Internet

In early 2007 my office did a study that found that over 85% of registered sex offenders in New York City live less than five blocks from schools, and 670 sex offenders live within just two blocks. Some offenders are even closer, permanently residing less than 500 feet away from unwitting parents, educators and children.

Along with several colleagues in Congress, we introduced & passed the KIDS (Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators) Act of 2007, a bill to require sex offenders to register their e-mail and instant message addresses with the National Sex Offender Registry. The “Kids Act’ implemented one of my six recommendations to keep a closer eye on sex offenders both near school grounds and online. I also proposed stricter GPS tracking of sex offenders, tougher enforcement of registration laws and more public disclosure of sex offender data.

Sadly, the Internet is the predator's venue of choice today. We need to update our strategies and our laws to stop these offenders who are a mere click away from our children.

I'm sorry I'm not following. Are you saying that you consider Anthony Weiner a paedophile? I'm not getting it.

Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Representative Anthony Weiner and Jared Lee Loughner have neurological and psychiatric damage.
People of course are very sympathetic toward Gabby Giffords because she was shot; but generally are quite furious with Rep. Weiner, who “should” have better judgment and impulse control.
And the vast majority of people will never be capable of understanding Gabby Gifford’s shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, also a victim of neurological and psychiatric damage--- a classic paranoid schizophrenic, and the son of an ordinary couple.
It’s too bad that that all three conditions cannot be seen as part of the “mind/body” connection. The mind and the body are one. Gabby did not want to be a brain trauma case, and I doubt if Anthony Weiner wanted to be in such legal problems. Jared’s twisted neurons foresaw notoriety and violence.
Gabrielle Giffords has received state of the art medical care as well she should. The many wars in which the United States is engaged, have vastly improved treatment for traumatic brain injury.
Anthony Weiner’s treatment will more likely be based on an inpatient version of 12-Step Recovery.
Jared Lee Loughner’s schizophrenia which affects 2 percent of the population is not understood, is underfunded for research; and Arizona continues to allow concealed weapons.

I get kinda annoyed by everyone going into treatment for everything.
06:29 AM on 06/12/2011
I think treatment is a good idea if he intends to save his marriage but as far as remaining a congressman he has lost all credibility. He must resign in order to allow the voters a chance to send a trusted individual to work on behalf of the American people.

He is really afraid of being jobless without his cushy government gig.

This whole treatment thing is ridiculous.  What exactly is being treated?

"This whole treatment thing is ridiculous. What exactly is being treated?"

Well if that statement isn't a dichotomy. First you express expertise about the treatment being ridiculous and then you ask what exactly is being treated. Do you understand the problem or not?

It's a PR ploy to allow him to keep the only job he has ever held (politics; see bio for Weiner, Anthony).

Whenever people have a problem now they chalk it up to being an "addiction" and try to use vacation "treatment" as a way to show that they are trying to resolve the problems that are not their fault.  It is an addiction remember.  they do not want to do it, but they have no choice.

Ah-boo I say to this.  Ah-boo!

Treatment,I thought there was nothing wrong here.Treatments are like being sentenced to life on death row, They continue on and nothing ever happens.

Please note that Reps and Senators get 100% of their healthcare bills paid by you and me. They put in a provision in the new healthcare bill that excludes them from the bill's healthcare program. Wealthy politicians get free treatments, healthcare until they die.
01:31 AM on 06/12/2011
And wealthy dems, (lots more dems are millionares than republicans) don't get 100% of everything paid for them too?
07:42 AM on 06/12/2011
That is correct. And thats the problem with social security and our healthcare system. The lawmakers ,congress etc, dont participate in them systems so ,just how hard are they going to fight to keep them systems for us.nadda.

There are men and women sitting in jail cells for doing similar acts. Our morality police should take a new look at what is and what isn't immoral in this day and age. Additionally, the general public should learn a bit about sexual aberrations and recognize that these people don't need jail time, but need proper treatment. (Note: Weiner is going to undergo treatment).
01:12 AM on 06/12/2011
You're wrong. you do not go to jail when you have your pants on and zipped. He could have had something in his pocket.

Get your legal information correct before stating "men and women sitting in jail cells for doing similar acts".

There are probably hundreds of diseases and illnesses that at one time were considered incurable. Polio, Small Pox, etc. Maybe you should show a little optimism regarding the future of medical science.

When will people doing assinine things like tweeting his crotch stop copping out by blaming some bugus addiction or disorder that some bogus treatment is going to cure?
11:21 PM on 06/11/2011
Rich914: It's a pretty good bet that you have never taken a psychology course.
02:56 PM on 06/12/2011
Never took a psychology course that taught personal responsibility and decent behavior are merely the choices of a particular brain type and assinine behavior can always be treated as long as you've got the copayment and some whacky shrink who specializes in treating assininism. By the way I don't find assininism in the DSM, is there another name for it?

As punishment he should be put into a room with several teen age girls and made to do nasty things to them continuously. That would teach him a valuable lesson.
