Tina Fey On Tracy Morgan's Homophobic Rant: 'Violent Images... Disturbing To Me'

Tracy Morgan Tina Fey

As word leaked out about Tracy Morgan's violently homophobic on-stage rant at a standup show on June 3rd in Nashville, his representatives worked quickly to release to the press an apology from the eccentric comedian.

Hours later, his boss made clear that those words of regret, not hatred, best be honest.

In a statement released to the press, "30 Rock" executive producer and star Tina Fey -- a longtime gay rights advocate -- had a harsh message for her co-star (via Deadline):

I'm glad to hear that Tracy apologized for his comments. Stand-up comics may have the right to "work out" their material in its ugliest and rawest form in front of an audience, but the violent imagery of Tracy's rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community.

It also doesn't line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person.

I hope for his sake that Tracy's apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian coworkers at "30 Rock," without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.

The other producers and I pride ourselves on 30 Rock being a diverse, safe, and fair workplace.

Fey, named one of gay newspaper The Advocate's People of the Year for 2008, emphasized her close friendship with the gay community in her recent memoir, "Bossypants."

Morgan has showed his appreciation for Fey's help in the past; his former "Saturday Night Live" cast mate and head writer has given him chances no one else would, he told Oprah Winfrey in 2010.

“She’s my friend. I love her," he said. "She understood that I knew who I was. Where everybody else [said]: ‘Oh, he don’t know. His whole career is chance.’ And she understood that I was making choices. I was making choices on TV. And she not only would write things, she would just encourage me.”

NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt also released a statement condemning Morgan's remarks:

I speak for NBC and myself personally when I say we do not condone hate or violence of any kind and I am pleased to see Tracy Morgan apologizing for recent homophobic remarks in his standup appearance. We will always recognize an artist's freedom to express him or herself, but not when reckless things are said no matter what the context. Unfortunately, Tracy's comments reflect negatively on both 30 Rock and NBC -- two very all-inclusive and diverse organizations -- and we have made it clear to him that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.

Once again Tina Fey shows intelligence and wisdom. Her statement was optimal from many aspects.

Whether it's toward a gay or straight person, this type of joke is commonly heard in everyday life but on another level looks like this commotion shows another connection between imagination and imagery. I love 30 Rock and see humor in most everything except maybe the "kill culture"..Why is Tracy's bit not funny when we love horror and severely violent "entertaining" movies (multi-billion dollars worth of getting off) and are so surprised at the violent images in the "real" world?

I cannot believe these comments. People are actually implying that Tracy Morgan would stab his son. If he had substitute the word Republican for gay, it would be a million laughs - not OH! Call CPS!

If my son said he was a born again Christian, I'd stab him! (Cue the crickets........)

It makes you wonder how sincere his apology really is when the people that have the power to ruin his career are adamantly against his anti-gay tirade.

Tracy Morgan needs to show that his apology is not just in his own best self interest, but is something that comes from the heart. Admittedly this will be difficult seeing that this is not his first outburst against the gay community.

Maybe he can be redeemed by remembering that "actions speak louder than words". You have a lot of work ahead of you Tracy.

I've been a 30 Rock fan from day 1 but if watching the show helps put a paycheck in the pocket of someone how condones violence like this I will stop watching 30 Rock and NBC and supporting their advertisors till Tracy Morgan loses his job like so many other tv and radio personalities with similar views.

Morgan needs to go Tina. We'll boycott the show and NBC otherwise. Killing kids? Holy cow!

I am trying to figure out why Tracy Morgan is getting off a lot lighter than Michael Richards did.

Comedy is dangerous. Sometimes, you riff on something that would go over well with one audience and think that it'll be universally funny, only it blows up in your face.

I have no idea if Tracy Morgan is as homophobic as his tirade would suggest, but I think he needs to try out his material with a more diverse audience before taking it on the road. As a big fan of 30 Rock, I truly hope his apology is sincere.

What is with all the "free speech" defense? No one on earth is suggesting this type of speech be censored or made illegal. But that doesn't mean there aren't consequences when people hate your hate speech. You're free to say what you want and we are free to want you fired if we find it disgusting, idiotic and hateful.

I love "30 Rock", but the TV character's version of his real life self-destructive idiocy is played out, getting rid of him would be a good shake up for the show.

You tell'em Tina! Only gays can make fun of gays and blacks make fun of blacks.
Can someone just write a guide or handbook on the matter. That way we won't make mistakes and can always refer back to it?

You think saying he'd murder his child for being gay is making fun of someone? This wasn't about fun, it was hate.

Here's a guideline, violence isn't funny. It's serious business.

Next guideline, the disenfranchised is not to be the target of the privileged.

I think if you follow those two simple guidelines you'll be fine.
