Gabrielle Giffords Photos: First Images Of Congresswoman Since Arizona Shooting

PHOENIX (Associated Press) -- The first photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot in the head in a mass shooting in Tucson about five months ago were released early Sunday.

The photos appeared on her Facebook page.

The Facebook photos, taken May 17 outside her Houston hospital, are the first clear snapshots of Giffords since the shooting five months ago during a constituent meet-and-greet in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson.

The photos showed how far she has come since she was wounded in the left side of her forehead, but her spokeswoman, Pia Carusone, has cautioned that Giffords still has a long way to go in her recovery.

They show the congresswoman outside, the greenery of the hospital lawn in the background. She smiled directly into the camera in one, while in the other she smiled downward as she sat next to her mother, Gloria Giffords.

Giffords has been in a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting. Six people were killed and 13 were injured, including Giffords.

Carusone said Friday that Giffords could be released sometime this month.

She said doctors and family are considering "many factors" while making the critical next-step decision to release Giffords from TIRR Memorial Hermann, the hospital where she has been undergoing intensive daily rehabilitation since late January.

"We're looking at before the end of the month. We're looking at early July," Carusone said. "We don't have a date."

But in an interview published this week in the Arizona Republic, Carusone made clear that Giffords remains a shadow of her former self as she has difficulty stringing together sentences and relies heavily on gestures and facial expressions to communicate. She also faces some difficulty in expressing bigger, more complex thoughts, Carusone said.

While Giffords' release from the hospital after five months of intensive inpatient therapy will mark an important step in her recovery, she still must undergo months of outpatient rehabilitation that will include speech, occupational and physical therapy.

Since the shooting, the only time the public has gotten a glimpse of Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space. The grainy footage, taken from afar, showed Giffords slowly but purposefully walk up the airplane's stairs.

The newly released photos, shot by Tucson photographer P.K. Weis just before surgery on her skull, provide a much clearer image.

Last month as Kelly was orbiting Earth, doctors repaired Giffords' skull, finally freeing her from wearing a cumbersome protective helmet that her staff members say she hated.

Since the shooting, Giffords has made remarkable strides, requesting her favorite foods, singing her favorite songs, and relearning how to walk and talk, although she struggles to string sentences together.

In an interview with The Arizona Republic published Thursday, Giffords' Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said Giffords' limited speaking ability has led her to rely primarily on facial expressions and hand gestures to communicate.

"She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she's still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing," Carusone said. "Add it all together and she's able to express the basics of what she wants or needs. But, when it comes to a bigger and more complex thought that requires words, that's where she's had the trouble."

Carusone also said that if Giffords' recovery were to plateau now, "it would not be nearly the quality of life she had before."

"All that we can hope for is that she won't plateau today and that she'll keep going and that when she does plateau, it will be at a place far away from here," she said.

Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the shooting and is being held at a Missouri facility. A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial, but prosecutors hope his competency can be restored so he can answer for the charges.

Not dancing on the grave, so to speak, but this woman is still a sitting member of Congress and entitled as one of 435 Representatives to vote on very complex issues. She is going to be totally at the mercy of her "HANDLERS" who will tell her what to do. It's time that everyone recognize the truth and allow her to resign so the people of her district can have representation in Congress.

I understand where you are coming from, but to be fair, she still has her logic and reasoning skills, She knows what is going on. She just has trouble expressing what she wants to say. I'm excited for her and I think she is doing a great job in every aspect of treatment, and recovery, as well as being a good example for congress. She may very well be the most intelligent person in there! =D

Not saying you're wrong, because I don't really know how much Mrs. Giffords is capable of in terms of knowledge, judgement, reasoning and such. You could be right.

But what I believe when I look at the ranks of Congress and the lazy losers occupying most of the seats is that Mrs. Giffords deserves the time to recover for a while yet to see if she can ever return to this job. She served with passion and skill before the shooting. She deserves the long break and she deserves the benefit of hope that she can make a comeback.

It may not happen. I hope it does. If it doesn't, she will have accomplished more than a lot of the sorry excuses that take up seats in other jurisdictions.

Gabrielle Giffords Photos: First Images Of Congresswoman Since Arizona Shooting ? Actually, I'm pretty sure that the hospital staff took quite a view images before, during, and after surgery.

Now I'm just as happy as a pig in sunshine that this Congesswoman is "coming around" after extensive surgeries and therapy, but I've got to ask... Did Medicare take care of her medical bills, travel, rehab, transportation to Houston, transportation and lodging to Florida ( to watch her husband fly), teansportation from Houston to Tucson, and follow up medical and personal trips to Houston? Or are those of us struggling to pay our own medical bill taking on hers as well?
People are being shot almost eveyday in the U.S.A. and their doctors fight the government to cover 80% of charges and they WILL be expected to pay 20% plus deductable plus the ambulance ride. Uncle sam won't even pay our cabfare home.
This is a beautiful woman and no doubt she's only half as corrupt as your average lawmaker, but I don't consider any single one of them any more special or entitled to quality healthcare and / or travel allowances than you or I or your family or mine.
This shooting was insane and tragic but it doesn't justify draining our tax dollars on special health coverage and expenses for the government elite.

THE PHOTO ENRAGES ME. WHY CAN'T WE ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGE ILLNESS IN THIS COUNTRY? THE POOR WOMEN JUST GOT SHOT IN THE FACE,WHY CAN'T OUR LYNG MEDIA SHOW US SOME INDICATION OF WHAT SHE HAD TO GO THROUGH TO GET TO THAT MOMENT? WE ARE FORCE FED GORE IN ALL OUR MOVIES AND THE MEDIA CAN'T SHOW US ONE PICTURE WITHOUT A SMILE?

Good point ...

Its like we're kept unaware of the daily struggles of the sick, injured, cancer victims, people dying .. it's all part of life. Portrayed in a fake way in Hollywood but not allowed in real life.

To be fair don't you think that is part of the families choice, I know if I were recovering from a gun shot wound to the head I wouldn't be to excited for photos. Just a thought.

While it is definitely good news that Giffords is improving from the injuries she sustained in the January shooting, I'm not quite sure I'm as ready to celebrate as some (most) of you seem to be. If Gabrielle were to read these comments, could she even understand the sentiment behind them?

"All that we can hope for is that she won't plateau today and that she'll keep going and that when she does plateau, it will be at a place far away from here," she (Carusone) said.

Giffords has a life, but it's not HER life. It is not the life she chose to live, nor the one she worked so hard for. I'll celebrate and call her recovery a miracle when AND if she is ever able to do so herself. For now, cautious optimism is all I can muster.

Very encouraging! And I think that her short, dark hair looks great.

Here we go again, all the cloting, unthinking "God bless" stuff.

Six people died that day, and she's been permanently brain damaged. Where was "God's blessing" then? What we should be saying is "Shame on you, God, for it happening in the first place."

Truly amazing! I know this personally as my mother is in Giffords same place dealing with ability to be back to normal as possible.
For those that were lost...how wonderful it would be if they could be in this same place rather then gone. However, I'm sure they are in a much better and more wonderful place! :)

She looks good! I'm happy to see her recovery is going along so well considering the horrendous nature of her injuries. I don't think the average person would have fared so well, but she is fortunate to be able to afford the best healthcare available, and clearly it makes a big difference in outcomes. Here's hoping that she keeps improving!

I'm so conflicted. I'm so happy she looks so good and is apparently recovering and yet I am terrified that she may not fully recover. God Speed Gabbie. We're pulling for your full recovery and we think about you even when you don't make headlines.

I also remember those that lost their lives that day and those that were injured and wish peach for their families.

WOW, Gabrielle you are one amazing woman, a true American hero.

Keep up the great work, I once too had to relearn to walk after a devastating period in my life and each and every day was hurdle that some days I could not get over, remember the many, many people like myself are inspired by your strength, perseverance and smile.

From one survivor to another, keep up the great work.
