'Kidnapped' Lesbian Syrian's Blog A Hoax, Written By A Man

Syrian Blogger

06/12/11 11:50 PM ET   AP

CAIRO — A new entry Sunday in a blog purportedly by a lesbian Syrian-American living in Damascus asserted that the entire saga was a hoax, supposedly written by a man.

The post, which came days after an entry saying the blogger had been arrested, was signed by "Tom MacMaster" in Istanbul, Turkey.

In it, the author says the narrative was fictional but insists it "created an important voice for issues I feel strongly about."

It says the author never expected so much attention.

On Tuesday, a blog post at the same site, "A Gay Girl in Damascus," supposedly written by the woman's cousin, said she had been detained in Damascus after weeks on the run.

The story unraveled quickly after a woman in Britain said the photos on the Facebook account of the blogger known as Amina Arraf were actually of her. The Associated Press reported her disappearance, confirmed by an activist in Damascus, but reporters in Virginia then could find no trace of Arraf or her family.

The author of the blog post on Sunday titled it "Apology to readers" but wrote "I do not believe that I have harmed anyone." There was no listing for MacMaster in Istanbul.

"I only hope that people pay as much attention to the people of the Middle East and their struggles in this year of revolutions," MacMaster wrote in Sunday's blog posting. "The events there are being shaped by the people living them on a daily basis. I have only tried to illuminate them for a western audience."

The Washington Post reported Sunday that it had corresponded with and spoken to MacMaster for several days and learned that he was a 40-year-old from the U.S. state of Georgia, a Middle East peace activist who is now working on his masters degree at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

In the post purportedly by Arraf's cousin, Rania Ismail, it said Arraf was last seen Monday being bundled into a car by three men in civilian clothes as she was on her way to meet someone at the activist Local Coordination Committees. Ismail said a friend accompanying her was nearby and saw what happened.

A reporter for The Associated Press, who maintained a monthlong email correspondence with someone claiming to be Arraf, found the writer seemed very much like a woman in the midst of the violent change gripping Syria. The writer spoke about friends in Damascus, and outlined worries about her father and hopes for the future of her country.

In the emails, the person acknowledged fudging some details of escaping from Syrian security officials to protect herself and her family, and painted a harrowing picture of fleeing her home.

Jelena Lecic, the woman whose photos were linked to Arraf's Facebook profile, said the London woman first learned her likeness was being used when it was linked to article about Arraf in the Guardian newspaper, her spokesman has said.

The spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.

From the Guardian:

"A blogger whose frank and witty thoughts on Syria's uprising, politics and being a lesbian in the country shot her to prominence was last night seized by armed men in Damascus.

Amina Arraf, who blogged under the name Amina Abdallah, holds dual Syrian and American citizenship and is the author of the blog A Gay Girl in Damascus, which has drawn fans from Syria and across the world.

She was kidnapped last night as she and a friend were on their way to a meeting in Damascus. The kidnapping was reported on her blog by a cousin.

"Amina was seized by three men in their early 20s. According to the witness (who does not want her identity known), the men were armed," wrote Rania Ismail.

"Amina hit one of them and told the friend to go find her father. One of the men then put his hand over Amina's mouth and they hustled her into a red Dacia Logan with a window sticker of Basel Assad."

Kuwaiti baby incubator stories, anyone? Mobile WMD labs in Iraq? Hezbollah training in the Venezuelan jungles? Iranian nuclear weapon plans on laptops given by Mossad-MEK to IAEA? Colombia's capture of FARC laptops implicating Chavez? Al Qaeda hiding in Iran?

How many times have we seen that old Syrian Lesbian hoax pulled now? I've lost count. Some people fall for it every time.

Believe nothing. That is the harm caused by this author. Instead of helping his cause he will in fact ruin any hope of helping it. Why would anyone ever take action, actual or implied, after such a diabolical plan to decieve has been brought to light. Makes you wonder how much that is brought to us is truely real and not a fabrication.

In my opinion, I think all authors and would-be authors should take on the responsibility of labeling their online work as such...Fiction, Non Fiction or Based on Real Events. Literally anyone can write engrossing stories on the web and pass them off as reality. It's easier than going down conventional book publishing avenues, and it's as anonymous as writers wanna be. These deceptions are not going away any time soon, and in most cases it'll be impossible to authenticate a blogger's content, unless something drives them to spill the beans and expose themselves, both visually and verbally (which may prove amusing or appalling to the devoted reader).

The blog was labeled as at least partly fictional from the beginning. In the end, readers need to take responsibility for what they read and accept as "genuine." It really is that simple.

The lions share of responsibility belongs to the blogger, not the reader. And it appears as if he is having none of it. Just another discredited phony in the blogosphere.

You're wrong on that one.

The blog itself was never labelled "part fiction" but rather "Arraf" said that "her" work (in general) dealt with fiction.

Also, considering the topic and persona this dude adopted, it was on him to come clean a long time ago. The last straw was that he didn't stop it once the Arab Spring and Syrian uprising started - he was putting folks in danger because other gay people in Syria were running around trying to find "Arraf" and outing themselves in the process, and thus putting their lives at risk.

On NPR this morning I heard BBC's interviewthe blog author. This guy speaks almost perfect American English very no accent. The BBC guy asked him whether he thinks what he did only reinforce the Arab states' suspicion that CIA/Western media propaganda is behind the uprisings. The blogger side stepped the question and kept on repeating that he knows people in Syria who are suffering from the government.

I don't know if this guy is a CIA plant but I am pretty sure someone is paying for him to blog that stuff.

Life is rarely as "clean" as movies...a Muslim, lesbian, freedom fighting blogger from Syria communicating with the West about the brutal crackdown of the completely evil regime is a comic book.

Whenever I see things like that that appear designed to hit certain emotional spots in people I cant help but be a little suspicious. This guy could have done far more good if he just posted his own knowledge of the situation over there as himself without the attempt at psychological manipulation and fantastic storytelling.

Agree completely -- unfortunately he has merely succeeded in undermining the credibility of people who are genuinely suffering and trying to get their story out there, not to mention endangering some who actually sought to support "Amina". The more I read about this guy and his motivations, the worse it gets. I hardly even know where to start.

Another faker, huh? It wouldn't have been any less interesting if this tale had been told in a fictional, story telling format - clearly noting it as such!! Instead, it's a joke and an insult.

I suspect Syrian officials are relived and happier, now that they no longer have to look for Ms. Arraf within their prison population.

a cautionary tale to all Huffers who believe that everything written is true, and not wildly biased and slanted to the left-wing conspiracy’s agenda. once upon a time children, news was ‘reported’ factually and without opinion. today, however, it is a smorgasbord without a sneeze-guard in place to keep the accuracy fresh. moreover, where opinion is overt we have ‘moderators’ screening the comments.

Insightful post, and so true. It's not like anyone looking for objective news and objective viewpoints hasn't noticed it, either. And here's a note: all you really have to do to be a 'moderator' is to flag enough of others' posts which are also seen as objectionable to HuffPost staff. This would probably mean, if you flag enough conservative-leaning posts, or posts that refute a liberal-leaning HuffPost article, then poof, you're a moderator!

I'd love to hear why you think it is that lefties think news and facts are part of a right-wing conspiracy, and righties think news and facts are part of a left-wing conspiracy.

Who's right, and why?

why does everything on Huffpo have to be framed in the left/right; liberal/ conservative; dem/rep format? It makes it seem as if neither side is capable of independent thought and can only comment on news articles casting aspersions at each other. This article is about a liar in Syria, not the liars on news stations in your country, if you see any parallels thats fine, but to try to turn this into some sort of battle between the two parties is quite ridiculous, inane and silly. I understand its your right to free speech, but do you have to be so myopic.

Blogs and any information gathered on the net is highly suspect. AP and other news sources are lazy, they should do their homework the old fashioned way - hard research.

The worst thing about Mr MacMaster's "apology" was his explanation that he had created "Amina" because his views were attacked when he posted information on Syria under his own persona, and was accused of being anti-American. Had he had the courage to stand by his convictions, unapologetic for being a straight white American male, he could perhaps have done some good. As it is, he has undermined the credibility of many genuine victims of oppression and has actually endangered Syrians who sought to support Amina.
