LONDON - Prince Philip -- the colorful and outspoken husband of Queen Elizabeth II -- attended a special church service and reception to celebrate his 90th birthday Sunday.

The queen, Prince William and his new bride Kate Middleton joined the rest of the royal family to celebrate Philip's birthday at Windsor Castle, one of the queen's residences, 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of London.

The royals arrived for the service in a fleet of limousines, scurrying into the church under umbrellas to protect them from the heavy rain.

Sportsmen, foreign royals, Prince Philip's godchildren and staff who have worked for the royal family were among the 750 guests invited to the church service at the chapel at Windsor Castle and to a reception.

The Reverend David Conner, who gave the church service, praised Philip for supporting his wife for six decades, and paid tribute to the work he did with charities.

Take a look at pictures and scroll down to keep reading.

Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, married the queen in 1947. He is the son of the late Prince Andrew of Greece and a great-great-grandson of Britain's Queen Victoria, giving him deep royal roots. The tall prince, still with military bearing but his face now craggy with age, has been a familiar figure at his wife's side for decades. He has championed numerous charities over the years, but is advising the ones he heads to start planning an orderly transition as he plots the end of his working life.

Instead of acting as if he can continue the punishing pace of royal engagements, Philip, who turned 90 on Friday. has acknowledged that he is losing stamina. In a television interview to mark his milestone birthday last week, he said he was nearing his "sell-by date."

"I reckon I've done my bit. I want to enjoy myself for a bit now. With less responsibility, less rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think of something to say," he said.

"On top of that your memory's going, I can't remember names. Yes, I'm just sort of winding down."

On Friday the queen made her husband the Lord High Admiral of the Navy, giving him a centuries-old title she had held since 1964. Philip had been a prominent naval officer until he gave up his career to be at his wife's side when she became queen.

The awarding of the title was seen as a sentimental acknowledgement by the queen of her husband's sacrifice on her behalf.

It's this kind of bravery that should make all Brit's proud. This is the kind of selfless bravery in the face of danger that helped the allies overcome the Germans in WWII. And they said the monarchy was a vestigial growth on the nation's economy!

"braved the rain" or "braved" any major or any minor elemental force is a perfectly normal and un-comment worthy figure of speech in Great Britain (you know the land that created the English language)

Why Americans have to comment deridingly every time something that they don't see or hear in Boise or Poughkeepsie (hats, language civilisation) appears over their limited horizon, I don't know.

Mind your tongue, deluk -- I dropped my guard few days ago and inadvertently used the the word "facetious" instead of "snarky". It got quite a lot of mileage, with shock waves rippling even beyond the hallowed boundaries of HP. Stick to a maximum of two syllables and you'll be fine. Otherwise you will simply have to brave the backlash.

My family members often say they are going to "brave the rain", or more commonly, "brave the elements". You live in a very small world, my friend, and it shows in your comment.

They'll be hauling him off to the old folks' home before too long. (Especially after he pinches his grandson's wife in the ### a couple of times. Probably isn't sure who she is since he slept thru the wedding.)

What other ignorance do announced with such bravado?

another silly hat. she should get an award for the silliest hats awards and she wears them well and very proudly. i am happy that she's smiles with those silly little. this will be my last comment about their silly wardrobe. if i dress funny to them is because i am not from where they are from but they have money and their outfits doesnt become them. i think they need a more up to date fashion consultant like kimora, lisa raye and beyonce

Dear ApoLoon-eeeya Bliss, should this actually be "u'r" last comment...I would gratefully embrace the silence. I would dance under the stars and forget that you have a publically ridiculous thing against nice (vogueish?!?) hats, and the people with more money and class than you, who pull them off. I recommend a rock and some grammar lessons. The worms would be grateful.

"The worse of the worse when it comes to morals" - how do you know that???

Hollywood - usually does not come to you by birth. You have to work for it.
