Zombie March Takes Over the Loop With Undead Mob (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 06/13/11 02:45 PM ET   Updated: 08/13/11 06:12 AM ET

A "flash mob" of a different sort than the ones recent headlines have trumpeted took over the Loop Saturday as Chicago's Zombie March turned out some 500 undead participants, much to the delight and fright of those who reveled in the bloodbath.

The march reportedly kicked off at Millennium Park before heading north along Michigan Avenue toward the Tribune Tower, near which the mob "attacked" a double-decker tour bus. Next, the ruthless gang headed back south toward the WLS's State Street studio, where participants made their plea for brains to the local television audience.

Photographer Ryan Lee Williams survived the event and passed along some shots to Huff Post Chicago. While the participant count was down somewhat from its 2008 count of 1,500 zombies, which reportedly set a world record at the time, this year's edition was undeniably frightening from the looks of it. I was just wondering why almost everyone in the march were whites (no kidding - there's a smattering of people of color but not much). Are white people that crazy? Or bored maybe? :-) :-) :-).

If you check my full set at www.flickr.com/ryanryanryan you will see a few shots of people of color, including an absolutely beautiful family of four, and several other individuals. It's true that the march was largely white - I know a number of people came from the suburbs and even central Illinois to participate. But there was definitely some representation. Go to my flickr set and browse through the pics to see more.

As we all saw in Romero's "Night of the Living Dead," if it wasn't for that Black guy, all the white people would have been devoured. Most people of color know that they will just be the first ones arrested for Driving While Zombie. America is making strides, but still has far to go.

I so wish they had done this today during rush hour. It would certainly have brightened my morning commute!

It was on a Saturday to engage maximum tourist terror.

True- and that itself is a reward for any Chicagoan.

Nice. I've never been to a Tea Party rally myself, but they look like fun.

A quintessencial example of the right for freedom of expression, even if very odd and slightly disgusting.
