Anthony Weiner Resignation Could Come Within 'Days,' Democrats Hope He Will Quit Congress

Anthony Weiner Resignation Rumors Democrats

ANDREW MIGA and LARRY MARGASAK   06/14/11 10:18 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — House Democrats are counting on growing pressure from Rep. Anthony Weiner's colleagues, a suggestion from the president and the return of Weiner's pregnant wife from an overseas trip to persuade him to resign over a sexting scandal in which he sent lewd photos of himself and messages to several women.

The House's top Republican, Speaker John Boehner, joined the chorus of Democrats calling for the New York Democrat to quit. House Democrats went behind closed doors for their regular party meeting, but they decided against taking action against Weiner in hopes that he'll resign soon.

A fellow member of Weiner's New York Democratic delegation, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, said before the meeting, "Hopefully, we are hearing he might resign in a couple of days."

When she emerged later, she added: "He's waiting for his wife to come home. That's what we're hearing from his friends."

Weiner's wife, State Department official Huma Abedin, is due back from an overseas trip early Wednesday with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Weiner, meanwhile, has sought treatment at an undisclosed location and has been granted a two-week leave of absence from Congress.

The House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, made the suggestion again after the meeting, saying she wanted to make sure nobody missed her earlier resignation call while members were on a weeklong recess. Pelosi said she concluded that "with the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents and the need for help ... Congressman Weiner should resign from the Congress."

Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., said: "I think we should send a strong message to him that he should resign, and let's see what happens. The more of us who say it, the more telling it will be."

But even as top Democrats tried to pressure Weiner into resigning, Sen. Chuck Schumer, New York's senior senator and the Senate's No. 3 Democrat, has not taken a stand on whether the seven-term congressman, a longtime friend, should resign.

Asked Tuesday about whether he would support whatever Weiner's decides about his political future – even if he decides to stay – Schumer focused his comments on the personal side of Weiner's plight.

"As I said this weekend, those of us who have been friends with Anthony Weiner for a very long time feel his wrongful behavior is distressing, saddening and heartbreaking," Schumer told reporters. "It's clear he needs professional help. That's what he sought. And that's all I'm going to say."

Schumer, Weiner's political mentor, gave Weiner his first job on Capitol Hill when Schumer was a congressman.

Boehner had been content to let Democrats wrestle with the embarrassing scandal, but when asked Tuesday whether Weiner should resign, responded: "Yes."

Rep. Rob Andrews, D-N.J., said after the Democratic meeting that 95 percent of it concerned energy prices. Andrews said there was no discussion of stripping Weiner of his assignment on the Energy and Commerce Committee, a possibility Pelosi had mentioned Monday night.

President Barack Obama spoke bluntly about Weiner in an interview that aired Tuesday.

"I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign," Obama told NBC's "Today" show. In a rare foray into a congressman's ethical conduct, Obama said Weiner's actions were "highly inappropriate."

"I think he's embarrassed himself," the president said. "He's acknowledged that. He's embarrassed his wife and his family. Ultimately, there's going to be a decision for him and his constituents. I can tell you that, if it was me, I would resign."

The cascade of raunchy photos and other revelations about the 46-year-old married congressman has been a distraction for Democrats seeking an edge as they look ahead to the 2012 elections. Besides Pelosi, several other Democrats have called for Weiner to quit, including party chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.

Well, He's gone... Now can we please get back to the important issues that face this country. Honest to GOD why are we so blood thirsty for scandal. He may have brought this on himself but it's tacky and bad form to delight in another person's misfortune. That goes for you too Ms Hasselbeck (The View).....

Shouldn't "flag as abusive" be replaced with flag if it does not fit the narrative? Or flag if you disagree and proves you wrong?

Vitter did not lie to anyone and try to ruin their reputation. Weiner did.

what vitter did is illegal. he broke the law.
12:19 PM on 06/17/2011
What Wiener did was attempting to break the law, ie. making false allegations, and nearly making a false police report - ILLEGAL. He thought better of it. He lied to the press, he lied to his friends. If Vitter broke the law he should be charged. Where's the charges, and conviction? Vitter did not LIE AND TRY TO RUIN SOMEONES CAREER TO SAVE HIS OWN NECK. Vitter proved to be honest about his mistake. Weiner proved to be a liar and a cheat, and a self serving predator. Now who would you rather have remain in office. Don't answer, I know the answer.
12:26 PM on 06/16/2011
So did Vitter lie and try to ruin someone's career (think Andrew Breitbart)? Did he lie to his friends in the media, knowing that they would go on to defend him (think Kirsten Powers)?

Can anybody name ANYONE in the media that stuck up for Vitter, Ensign, Foley, or any republican caught with "their pants down"? Anyone?

Weiner matters because his character shows he should not be making laws in this country. He is not worthy of trust, judgment or respect. Drain the swamp!

Andrew Breitbarts career?

What exactly is it?

Professional gossip columnist?

Dont forget that Breitbart attempted to (and eventually succeeded) in ruining the career of a good man who stood up to the right wing nutters and even to his own president , the leader of his party , over private and personal and LEGAL matters.

Ruin andrew breitbarts career? Give me a break.

Karma will come to breitbart in time.

A sad day for Democracy if he resigns, since his constituents want him to stay and it is not their job to please a Washington D.C. elite or lacivious group of papparazzi Peeping Toms.

Washington D.C. is always distracted and never accomplishing what it should be accomplishing. They were like this before Anthony Weiner, and they will be like this after Anthony Weiner. Because most of them are prostituted to special interests - to the point of an indecency far, far, far worse than anything Mr. Weiner tweeted on his keyboard in mutually consenting, legal adult relationships, and in the privacy of his own home.

Maybe Breitbart should put a web cam in his own bedroom. Maybe they all should.

As soon as he receives a big enough pay-off, then he will resign. What do you think he is waiting for. Money
09:01 AM on 06/16/2011
He is only guilty of being a hetrosexual man. He's just doing what every other man has done. His dumb actions should not and DO NOT take away from his good work. I think everyone is upset because he exposed the fact the capital has a ultra private gym that the taxpayers are paying for.

If Weiner is forced to resign then the next time someone stubs a toe will be asked to resign...

i am not an anthony wiener fan at all, didnt like him the first time i heard him speak, but i think it is not anyone elses place to tell him to resign......that just seems dangerous to me, if his own party has the power to force him out of office, what will keep the same thing from happening sometime when there is a dispute over a vote on some bill? like a punishment for going against some crazy agenda.....if the democrats push him out the republicans will say hey the democrats did it so now you need to leave for whatever it is you did, then the power evolves into something more sinister.

I wonder where all the Democrats were when the Downing Street Memo revealed that then President George W. Bush and his sidekick, Dick Cheney, along with then U.K. Prime Minister, Tony Blair, fabricated "weapons of mass destruction" narrative, so we could illegally invade, occupy, and pummel an otherwise sovereign state without even a formal Declaration of War? Guess minority leader Pelosi thinks lying to the press about sending photos of one's private parts is more actionable than lying to Congress about weapons of mass destruction that resulted in the loss of many thousands of Iraqi and American lives.

I don't think Bush and Cheney were on twitter broadcasting evidence for everyone to use against them. Oh, yeah, evidence. You need evidence to consider something as actionable, something more than just bumper sticker narrative from the "Bush Lied..People Died" crowd.

Did the representative from Wash, State who was playing footsie with another man in the men's room at the airport resign?

Note to all Americans. This is the Universe (Err God, or "The Big Electron"), notifying you through "irony", that this doesn't matter. Aside from the fact that every human in history has had sexual "stuff" that they would lie about. There is yet another clue:

His name. And all the puns the media is avoiding:

Weiner needs support.

Weiner shrinks from controversy.

Weiner is not a stand up guy.

Weiner didn't give us the straight truth.

Weiner has a beef with media.

The media engulfs Weiner.

Media attention a cold shower for Weiner.

I guess I'm one of the few sane ones left. As I've said before... if we hold everyone to this standard, half of us will be in a gulag- with the rest on the waiting list.

As Shakespeare said, "Use every man after his desert, and who should 'scape whipping?" I live in Arizona, and I wish Anthony Weiner were my congressman. I have no representative in the House or the Senate.

TO The Democratic Party: "It is so sad that you have chosen to ignore the voice of so many Americans regarding Anthony Weiner?! Sadder ...that your behaviour and that of the MEDIA....might in some way.....remind Huma of the inhumane and unjust practices of stoning women in Arab countries!!! Much like an Arab family....you have acted in unison for the "perceived" dishonor to your members. You could not find the humanity or courage to stand up for one of your own. You showed no mercy as you added to Huma's humiliation...tore her marriage to shreds...and killed her husband's career!!!! Anthony, no doubt wounded her.....but seeing blood....the mob mentality finished the job!!! You have proven to be no better than the worst of us!!!!!"
