Carole White, Modeling Agent: Milan & Paris 'Absolutely Don't Want Black Girls'

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/14/2011 8:38 am Updated: 08/14/2011 5:12 am

In a lengthier article entitled "Is The Fashion Industry Racist? Yes -- And It Goes Right To Its Core," the Daily Mail's Liz Jones sits down with Premier Model Management founder Carole White to discuss whether there's any progress being made on the catwalk or in front of cameras.

White, Naomi Campbell's former agent, remarked, "At the high end, it is slightly better now. But in the mid-range -- the catalogues, the e-commerce websites -- it is difficult. They want girls who are ethnic, but light-skinned girls. If a girl is very dark, they say no."

Jones adds:

Carole says the problem stems from the influential fashion capitals of Milan and Paris.

'There, they absolutely don't want black girls. A black model has to be a real star before you can take her there. They only take a black girl when the biz is buzzing about her.'

However, European cities can't take all of the blame. In March, Jezebel reported that New York's most recent fashion week (Fall 2011) was the "whitest" since 2008, "featur[ing] 137 designer runway shows and presentations, and 5,269 different fall outfits were presented to the world's retailers and press. Of those 5,269 looks, 4,468 -- an overwhelming 84.8% -- were modeled by white women."

White also pinpoints photographers, saying a lot of them "don't know how to light a black girl."

White hasn't hesitated in the past to talk about industry goings-on, previously telling the Mail, "Now, we talk to our models about nutrition, make sure they have a personal trainer. Even our language has changed. A decade ago, we would have just said: 'Don't eat,'" and, "You'd think these girls would have handsome boyfriends, but they don't. They date short men who are insecure."

i'm not surprised by this revelation. it's obvious that most people in the fashion industry don't want to use black girls because we hardly see them on the runway. and people wonder why there's always going to be a BET, EBONY, JET, and anything else geared towards other ethnicities.

This is why no one should take fashion too seriously. Racism, the promotion of unhealthy body images and unrealistic expectations of beauty, and the idea that as long as you look good and have the right accessories your life is complete, and being educated about current events and culture comes in later if at all. I once was deciding between a subscription to two magazines: glamour and gq. I did a test for content, randomly flipping to a page in each. In GQ, it was an article about the best new museums to see. In Glamour, it was how to pick out a nail polish to flatter your skin tone. I went with GQ, where they aren't afraid to feature ladies like Emma Stone and Frieda Pinto or develop your brainpower. Russell Brand's "African Child" is the NORM in that business!

Black is a very powerful color.
It overwhelms the clothes.
Be flattered.

Some smart American designer will soon do a show with only black models and they'll get tons of publicity.

Do people finally get why Essence is so important? Or are they still buying into the ridiculous "reverse discrimination" argument.

I love the people getting mad at this... who had no problem with FUBU. The truth is that clothing companies should be able to cater to a specific audience REGARDLESS of HOW that is done [the majority of the target audience in PARIS is WHITE, and they want to see themselves in those clothes]. I once emailed Roca-Wear asking why they had no white males modeling for them, and why I couldn't model for them [I fit the entire list of requirements, but they had no caucasian or white label under their complexion questionnaire...]. This was done after the whole AF / AA "all white" fiasco'. I have zero problem with Roca-Wear catering to an audience, but the pot is calling the kettle, black. I never got a response.

I used to love buying fashion mags. and clothes, clothes clothes. All through the 80's & 90's &1/2 of the noghtie's, I worked in the industry and loved fashion. And for awhile it seemed we were making a few steps forward in this diversity issue. I loved the element of fantasy. If they weren't selling fantasy then they would indeed just show the clothes on hangers. Models are far more expensive and difficult to work with than inanimate objects.

I stopped buying them some years ago. I do support the social ideal of diversity, but that is not why I stopped even bothering with high fashion. I am ultimately a selfish consumer and it just got boring. Deathly boring to see nothing but pale, emaciated, sad little girls. No matter the 'fantasy' set up they were going for, athletic super-girls, fun party-girls, strong business women, sexxxy vixens....they were all the same placid lost little faces.....YAAAAAWN!

How sad, to be in fashion and have such a narrow view of beauty.

Well there is one designer that always has some of the hottest black models in his show and that is "Chado Ralph Rucci", check out his Fall 2011 show and the clothes are some of the best out there!

as a woman in my 30's it is impossible to take any part of the fashion industry seriously. clothing for grown women presented on the bodies on teenage girls who look more like tall prepubescent boy. i've been watching a lot of classic movies lately. talk about "luscious" women in clothing that hugged every curve! i enjoy fashion because i respect the art of well-cut, well-fitted clothing, but the industry is becoming increasingly absurd with each passing day.

its a shame, and then again its no different than any business controlled by white people who see themselves mirrored by the models or the actors. As long as money is controlled by a few , the status quo will remain. There are lots of black stars, but they aren;t doing anything to help the situation, because their popularity and careers are still in white hands. Look at how the right wing media treats the president of the united States, and you wonder about black models??

Mugsee Bowles (I'm not sure of his last name) played for years in the NBA and he is only five foot three. He is an incredibly exciting player who never let the tall guys intimidate him. He'd fly right under their arms! Pippen's comparison is absolutely invalid.

This is definitely racism and ignorance (they are the same thing, really). Anyone with any taste at all knows that clothes always look better on black people. It's just a fact.

I don´t think the problem is racism, ignorance or the beauty of the models. The fact is that in Europe (where I live) the most of the people is Caucasian, and if you select the people in this countries that can afford this clothes they are 90% Caucasian people, 9% Asian people & 1% black people...
03:10 PM on 06/15/2011
whether or not they can afford what they are buying isn't the case. poor people buy the latest in fashion. which is 90% of the reason why they're poor.

The problem is clearly racism. The article said the high end is more diverse. It is mid-range that is the problem. They absolutely will not use black models. Given the strong black middle class and how consumerist it is, well, let's just say that more blacks and Asians are buying the clothes, even if they can't afford them. I know mail room clerks that have Luis Vuitton and Fendi, real, not fake.

I was actually being deadly serious. I know many will not agree with me but I think black people invariably make the best models for a number of reasons.
