Unlocked iPhone 4: Now In The Apple Store Starting At $649

Unlocked Iphone 4

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/14/11 10:50 AM ET Updated: 08/14/11 06:12 AM ET

Apple is officially selling unlocked iPhone 4 models.

Visitors at the online Apple Store can select from a 16GB unit for $649 or a 32GB unit for $749. Customers can choose from either white or black flavors.

Available only in the U.S., the unlocked devices are GSM-compatible, meaning users can place calls on either AT&T's network or T-Mobile's without having to sign a two-year contract for either carrier. The catch, however, is that the unlocked iPhone won't support T-Mobile 3G download speeds.

"[D]ata transmission on the T-Mobile network will occur over the slower EDGE protocol because the carrier's 3G network is incompatible with the iPhone," Apple Insider points out.

Could this offer possibly be a precursor to a full-fledged T-Mobile iPhone? CNET implies so:

Earlier this year, AT&T announced its plans to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion. If that deal is approved by regulators in the coming months, there will be just one GSM carrier in the U.S., and the need for an unlocked iPhone 4 will be diminished.

For now, Apple bills the unlocked device as an ideal companion on trips overseas.

"If you don't want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice," Apple's description of the device reads. "It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you'll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide."

This could mean cheaper rates for U.S. iPhone users who make calls while outside the U.S.--great news for vacationers who rack up massive phone bills by placing calls on local networks in foreign countries.

However, Technologizer sheds light on another crucial caveat: an unlocked device costs about $450 more per year than a locked version with a two-year contract.

"Here's how the total cost breaks down, assuming you choose the cheapest voice and data options and stick with AT&T for two years," writes Technologizer. "Locked AT&T iPhone 4 minimum cost: $1758.76 ($199 for a 16GB phone, plus two years of voice and data at $64.99 a month) [...] Unlocked iPhone 4 minimum cost: $2208.76 ($649 for a 16GB phone, plus two years of voice and data at $64.99 a month)."

If you don't take your iPhone on frequent trips outside the U.S., an unlocked device might not be the best choice for you. But if you're a frequent flyer fed up with high roaming charges, then you might want to consider Apple's offer.

I will scream if AT&T takes over T-Mobile. T-Mobile is one of the only alternatives left with an unlimited data package. How about that freedom of choice, republicans?

I just got the IPHONE 4 from Verizon. I do not think I would ever need an unlocked version because I am not traveling much these days. The IPHONE is a great product. The DROID does not even compare.

You have to be a fool to pay 649 or 749 for a phone and you can't use the device to its full potential. I guess some people are willing to pay anything in order to get an iphone. I don't think it's worth it

What if you already have a AT&T plan with another phone (like Android)? Now you can switch to the iPhone. I have a Samsung (not a smartphone) and I might consider this as I don't need data plan, the wifi alone capability is good enough.

I travel overseas frequently and made the one-time mistake of taking a Verizon Blackberry and using their global modem for my computer. The voice and data charges were utterly insane! Literally thousands in data charges for merely picking up email a very few times and $8+ per minute for any call to anywhere!

Now I have a simple phone purchased in Turkey and just get pre-paid SIMM cards.

For those who haven't traveled outside the U.S., we pay by far the highest fees for mobile service of any country I have visited. It's all because our phones are linked to specific service providers and the service they provide linked to a specific phone. Both the service providers and manufacturers lobbied hard and spent much money to create this "consumer loose all" system in the name of "free" or virtually free phones with long contracts.

All iphones have been avaible without simlocks in Australia since they were first introduced. You can buy them at phone shops, or even from the apple.com.au website without sims.

That's probably the price of an unsubsidized iPhone 4. Not nuts at all. So you now know that telcoms take off nearly $200-$300 off the TRUE price of an iPhone in order to lock you in a two year contract.

Just wait till AT&T starts putting meters on basic bandwidth for general usage on top of fees. AT&T is the biggest obstacle to progress.

Americans pay almost 65 dollars a month?? thats insane! from a country that is so patriotic and loves capitalism this is quite shocking to hear. AT&T is a greedy company and this new takeover deal shd be snubbed.

Yes, and that doesn't even include text! I checked out your claims on Vodaphone and O2 and I can't find a plan in that price range that has 250 minutes and unlimited internet. I did find a plan with 100 minutes, 500 texts and no internet for $16.

Anyway, it does seem you pay about 50% less than we do for a comparable plan, and you get texts thrown in for free.

try giffgaff.com. voda and o2 suck. ;)

Unlimited UK texts
Unlimited Mobile Internet
Free calls and texts to giffgaffers

This is amusing to me that only now the US gets to buy what we have been able to get since day 1. All phones bought from apple.com are unlocked in UK. And they work at 3G! Because our networks dont use silly frequencies the rest of the planet doesnt use haha.

Those prices are in line with those in Europe for the same models. I'm glad you can get them unlocked brand new, but I'll stay with my unlocked & jailbroken 3GS from Craigslist for now...
