Being Woody Allen: FilmDrunk's Retrospective Of The Director's Surrogates (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/15/11 04:55 PM ET Updated: 08/15/11 06:12 AM ET

When Woody Allen gave up starring in his own films, he handed over the reigns to various actors who managed to keep the director's on-screen persona alive. But until now, you might have had a hard time putting your finger on the qualities that make one particularly Woody-esque. Fortunately, the folks at FilmDrunk have put together the following primer, starring John Cusack, Kenneth Branagh, Jason Biggs, Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Larry David and Owen Wilson. Watch and learn... perhaps one day you'll be called to serve as a Woody Allen surrogate.

So freaking true!! I've seen all those films and this video speaks the truth! I heart Woody Allen!

This is why I haven't liked a Woody Allen movie in 30 years. Every actor sounds and acts like Woody. Mia Farrow acted the same way when she starred in all of his movies. Stammering, whiny neurotics. Enough already.

I'm tired of the same references, and may I say I am not being vasicious or didactic.

Yeah, but none of 'em discuss masturbation as well as Woody did in his early films. :)

I'm not so sure about that. Maybe I'll have to see Midnight in Paris again.

i loved that he doesn't try to 'be' woody allen. he really gives it his own thing. he has a very natural style.

I personally think the only really good surrogates have been Will Farrell and Larry David because they both manged to play his character without it just being mimicry.
