Carolina Herrera's Fall Ads Inspired By Old Portrait (PHOTOS)

Carolina Herrera's fall advertisements might look a little familiar.

Women's Wear Daily writes that photographer Patrick Demarchelier found inspiration in a 1970 portrait of the designer by Norman Parkinson:

Invited for a leisurely lunch one afternoon, [Parkinson] later snapped Herrera at ease and gave her the shot as a memento. Fast forward to the soon-to-be-released fall 2011 images, which are meant to evoke a similar spirit of stolen moments, especially effortlessly stylish ones.

We're totally digging Herrera's turtleneck, chain belt and wide-legged trousers, but we'd settle for a sequined sweater as modeled by Sigrid Agren, too.

Check out the two images below and to read more, head over to WWD.com.

Oh, they have a "similar spirit", do they? Let's review.

The 1970s one is:

1. Outdoors, not indoors
2. With completely different outfit
3. In a different type of chair
4. With different styling
5. In black and white instead of colour
6. Not photoshopped

The '70s one looks wistful and candid, while the modern one looks staged and sexualised.

The black and white in the old photograph evokes a romance of times gone by, whereas the cold blue lighting and reclined angles of the chair in the modern photo suggest a detachment that borders on the clinical.

They are "similar in spirit" like the centre of the sun is similar to a raccoon.

Yes...the "sit on wicker with hand on head" pose has NEVER been done before in the history of photography...except once...in 1970.

Keep posting stories like this that waste my time and I will stop reading. And now I am wasting even more of my time by posting my own comment... You owe me, HP.

I'm pursuing a class action lawsuit for money I could have earned instead of clicking on misleading, pointless links on HP. You want in?

They're saying the *spirit* of them is the same, but it's not even! So misleading, as ever.

I see no similarities between the two photos at all. And the original is actually better than the newer one.

She's younger... more glamorous in the older photo. Looks pretty good in the new one. Who cares of the first influenced the second?

You do realise it's not the same model, right?
