HAVANA (AP) — Cuba has published revolutionary icon Ernesto "Che" Guevara's journal from the guerrilla campaign he fought with Fidel Castro.

"Diary of a Combatant" covers the period from 1956 until late 1958, days before the Cuban Revolution swept Castro to power.

It begins with his arrival in Cuba aboard the yacht "Granma" with Fidel and Raul Castro and covers his march from the eastern side of the island to the capital.

It was launched in Havana on Tuesday — which would have been Guevara's 83rd birthday. Guevara's widow Aleida March and one of his daughters were on hand to sign copies.

March told reporters the purpose of publishing the diary is "to acknowledge his thoughts, life and work."

Guevara was killed in Bolivia in 1967.

He might be have been effective in the Cuban revolution but his attempt to replicate "La Revolucion" in South America was a disaster. He was a terrible strategist and did not understand well the people he was trying to "liberate." The locals thought he was actually dumb when noticing how he was planning to fight the soldiers that were after him. He was never a "real" mountain man and though that fighting at 12,000 - 15,000 feet high is the same as fighting in the resort type of weather and geography that Cuba has.

He is defined by that iconic photo of him in the beret. More than his character and contributions, that image established his place in history.

He was relatively effective in Cuba. As for the charge of murderer Revolutions are never pretty and yes people die. His exploits after Cuba were a joke. From my reading Castro was happy to see him go. Looking back all those years the revolution was justified. The vast majority of Cubans live a better life now than they did under Baptista. I wonder had the US not isolated the island economically if it's progression to a more European social democracy might have happened. Maybe not with Castro around, but just speculating. Much of the jingoism you hear in the states is from the losing side. That's a group of Democracy loving patriots...right.

Why is HuffPo deleting comments that are pro-Che? Nothing inappropriate with the words or meaning of my posts. This site is a hackjob for capitalist bosses, nothing more nothing less. Enjoy your place in history as pawns of the bosses HuffPo. I wonder if this will make it through your censors?

It made it! Now how about the posts that didn't make it through the filter...

Being a Communist doesn't make him bad but his actions made him a killer.

So you think murdering and butchering people you don't like is cool? How liberal of you.
02:37 PM on 06/17/2011
I am not a "liberal," that term only applies to capitalists. Your policies kill your sisters and brothers everyday, all over the world. They even kill you, though you are too lost in your ways to see that. Socialism will take hold in this country and the next, and very, very soon.

All those that honestly believe Che was a hero, obviously really did not now him. Remember this. He was a hero to Communism. And how much of anything that comes out of the mouths of communists can you believe? He is not a Universal hero. He was a hero to a few Castro brothers in Cuba and a few guerilla fighters in the jungles of Central and South America. That's all. Because he was a common criminal.
04:30 PM on 06/16/2011
Actually the Castro brothers got fed up with him...sending him first to the Congo (another disaster) and then to Bolivia.

The Art of iconizing a common criminal. Che Guevara was in charge of all executions taking place in Cuba. The Argentinian physician was in charge of killing Cubans who opposed the Castro antics. Many of those who worked close with Che have agreed that this physician was no more no less than a common criminal. I was there also. I grew up in the island. Sad to see so many people who believe he was a hero. Of course, most of them were never in Cuba with him.

He was in charge of executing the previous executioners, the Batista supporters who were worst than castro supporters, and killed many cubans. That said Che was a bad man.
03:18 PM on 06/17/2011
He executed the those in the puppet government and those who stood between the PEOPLE and thier true freedom, the freedom from capitalist bosses. Being you said you grew up on the island i suppose you had family that were amongst those deserving of execution, and like cowards the survivors fled to their American backers. Too bad you made it up here to pollute our discourse with your defense of capaitalist atrocities. Our day of freedom here in the US will come soon enough, and those who stood in the way will be dealt with how the PEOPLE see fit. Capitalism kills more people in a day on this earth than Che could have in a long and healthy life, if he chose to try and compete with the great beast in that regard. Capitalism has failed, our time is now.

And with them he killed masses of non political people. Common people. That is not heroic. That is cowardice. Win the backing of a people by killing those that do not agree with you. That was the policy used by Hitler, Stalin, Herod, Vlad the Impaler, Ide Amin Dadda, Caligula, prosecutors on the Inqesition, judges at the Salem witch trials, and all other cowards of history.
