Georgia Immigration Lawsuit Joined By Mexico, 10 Other Countries

Georgia Immigration Lawsuit

GREG BLUESTEIN   06/16/11 02:22 PM ET   AP

ATLANTA — Mexico and 10 other countries have joined the legal fight against Georgia's tough new immigration law, warning that the strict crackdown could jeopardize close ties between the U.S. and its Latin American neighbors.

The nations filed briefs late Wednesday in support of civil liberties groups who asked a federal judge to declare Georgia's new law unconstitutional and block it from taking effect. The filing marks a new phase in the legal showdown that has pitted Georgia's attorneys against groups who had threatened to challenge the law even before it was adopted by lawmakers.

Mexico's move also echoes the legal strategy it pursued to challenge tough new immigration rules enacted by other states. Attorneys representing Mexico filed briefs challenging similar legislation adopted in Arizona and Utah.

Georgia's law, known as HB 87, would allow law enforcement to check the immigration status of a suspect who cannot provide identification and empowers them to turn over anyone found to be in the country illegally to federal authorities. It also adds new penalties for those convicted of harboring illegal immigrants and presenting false documents when applying for a job.

Gov. Nathan Deal's office on Thursday declined to comment, but he has praised the legislation as a "responsible step forward" in the absence of federal reform. Earlier this week, Deal urged farmers who claimed workers have been scared away by the new immigration restrictions to hire people on probation to work the fields instead.

The measure, Mexico said, would strain diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Mexico, "interfering with the strategic diplomatic interests of the two countries and encouraging an imminent threat of state-sanctioned bias or discrimination."

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru also filed briefs Wednesday in support of the plaintiffs.

Other outside groups have also sought to intervene in the run-up to a highly anticipated hearing scheduled for Monday, when a judge could decide whether to block the law from taking effect. Court officials expect a crush of people to attend and are arranging for a spillover courtroom to hold the crowd.

The Anti-Defamation League filed an amicus brief this week warning that the law could deter Latinos from reporting crimes and create an underclass vulnerable to increased hate crimes and violence. And the American Immigration Lawyers Association claims the law forces police to make "highly discretionary judgment calls" about whom they should detain for immigration violations.

The filing from Mexico said the country's top officials were closely watching the debate surrounding the Georgia measure. It said Mexican officials were dismayed when Georgia passed the law, which it said could impact millions of Mexican workers, tourists and students in the U.S., and millions more whose jobs depend on international trade.

"Mexico respectfully submits that, if HB 87 is allowed to take effect, it will have a significant and long-lasting adverse impact on U.S.-Mexico bilateral relations, and on Mexican citizens and other people of Latin American descent present in Georgia," it said.

I live in Hawaii and the famous Kona coffee is brought to you thanks to the ruthless farmers that would not pay liveable wages or benefits to the pickers. If you are a non Central American you will never get through the gate to get a coffee picking job because they have Mexican superintendents that bring their own from California . These workers do sunrise to sunset and even nights 7 days a week and take home $50,000 per season a piece. If they get hurt they are on their own and out of the door. The Mexican population in Hawaii has risen to be the 2nd largest minority in the State. With that they strain a very generous health care system that is in shatters nowadays. For fun they get drunk on payday and go to the other side of the island to steal cars and break them for parts. You got to love the illegals!

Strain international relations? Bull pucky! All Mexico worries about is that if we do follow our own laws and deport the illegals, then Mexico will not have the billions the illegals send back to Mexico. The money the illegals send back to their families relieves Mexico of having to take care of the people and is the second largest income for the country.

The money large corporations save on the less than minimum wage payrolls goes into campaign donations.....That's why nobody goes after the root of the problem.

I bet you Hillary is doing overtime coordinati9ng efforts to get countries lijke Mexico to make a fuss. Just about the only argument the Obama adminstration can make against theer anti illegal immigration laws is that it interefers with foreign policy. Without teh fuss - rthey really have no case.

However this is extremely dangerous since we now have legal precident for foreign countries to dicitate our policies to us - making Calderon is Hilary's actual boss!

And the coke Americans suck up their noses -- that is OK right? I think Coke is Socialist in the sense that the consumer does not pay the full price. Mexicans are taxed in blood to provide Americans with that luxury. I hope that this is the first of many fusses directed at the clay feet of the hateful nativist movement in America -- or let us use its proper name: the new white supremacist movement.

Had there been no tolerance for Hispanophobia, Mexico-hate, immigrophobia, we would not have had events like the murder of Brisenia Flores by White Supremacists using the false issue of "illegal" immigration as a cover for violence. http://act.presente.org/sign/brisenia/

Mexico haters should note that the US is the world's biggest importer of Cocaine, Pot and other illegal drugs, and it is American vice that is feeding violence in Mexico. It is a true shame that we have states like Georgia, NC, Alabama and Arizona, but the bigger shame is some of the obscene discourse dished at a neighbor whose workers feed us.

The only thing Mexico is worried about is the vast amount of money the illegals send home. Their economy would be desperate without that money. Many, if not most illegals, are paid under the table & therefore pay no taxes. But they don't have a problem using social services provided for citizens & immigrants who are here legally, thereby causing another drain on our already strapped economy. I have no problem with legal immigrants. It's the illegals who take jobs away from citizens of this country because they'll work for lower wages, & the people who hire them.

Yea and true blue American Citizens like you have no problem paying them
slave wages while getting rich at the same time. Who do you think hires these
illegals, oh yea.....other illegals.

You must be a close neighbor, relative, co-worker of ZZPOT in order to absolutely know for certain that he hires illegals. Ridiculous claims about what others do or do not do does not help your argument or lead to any rational discussion.

Maybe Georgia should just adopt Mexico's immigration laws.

"Under the Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. Immigrants who are deported and attempt to re-enter can be imprisoned for 10 years."

I can't post here what I would like to say to Mexico. But Mexico needs to stay the hell out of Georgia's business and clean up their own rotten stinking mess in their own country. Calderon is a worthless piece of work, very similar to the one we have in the White House always meddling in other peoples business and never taking care of business at home. Clean up you country Mr. Calderon, and if you love your people so much keep them in Mexico and remind them that they need to obey laws. Calderon how much cartel money are you getting.

As long as we cant break the bad habit of meddling in their affairs because of our greed and ongoing effort to keep stealing their wealth, Mexico has every right to meddle in the way we treat people.

The truth is that Washington has always meddled in Mexican presidential elections. Beyond the US-endorsed election frauds of 1988 and 2006, there are other recent examples.

The 2012 presidential campaign is already underway... in Mexico.
And, as in previous Mexican elections, US interests are all over it like a cheap suit.
The truth is Washington has always meddled in Mexican presidential elections.

The Truth is that surplus profit exchanging hands is a much easier concept for most to tolerate than political corruption. Workers have become good competetive subservient slaves.

Over the past few decades Mexico has chosen to export its people rather than build an economy and provide jobs for its people. The crime and corruption of the government officials and the police has gone on for too long. It is time for the people of Mexico to stand up and demand that THEIR government provide jobs for its people and reduce the crime and corruption that is destroying the society.
