Russ Feingold: 'The Democratic Party Is In Danger Of Losing Its Identity'

First Posted: 06/16/11 11:45 PM ET Updated: 08/16/11 06:12 AM ET

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Former Wisconsin senator Russ Feingold issued Democrats a dire warning at the annual Netroots Nation conference here on Thursday, saying the party was in danger of losing its "soul" if it accepts corporate contributions in the 2012 elections.

"Sometimes we have to be very direct with the Democratic Party," said Feingold to the crowd of progressive activists and bloggers at the Minneapolis Convention Center. "Just as you have long pushed our Democrats to stand up for their ideals, I'm here this evening to ask you to redouble your efforts. I fear that the Democratic Party is in danger of losing its identity."

Feingold pointed to Priorities USA, a new Democratic independent expenditure group -- known as a super political action committee (PAC) -- that is allowed to raise and spend unlimited amounts of corporate money. It was launched by former deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton and former senior adviser Sean Sweeney in April.

"Creating those kinds of super PACs for Democrats is wrong. It is not something we should do. I disagree," Feingold said. "I think it's a mistake for us to take the argument that they like to make -- that what we're going to do now is, we're going to take corporate money like the Republicans do, then after we win, we'll change it. When's the last time anyone did that? Most people don't change the rules after they win."

"I think we'll lose anyway if we do this," he continued. "We'll lose our soul when it comes to the issue of corporate domination. People will see us as weak. People will see us as corporate-lite. We'll gut our message. I think it's not just wrong, I think it's a dumb strategy. It's dumb because people will not believe us if we do this."

Feingold lost his election in 2010 in the face of heavy outside spending on behalf of his Republican opponent, Ron Johnson. He discouraged outside Democratic spending on his behalf, as he has consistently done in his elections.

He told the Netroots crowd that he understood that Democrats want to win, and that Republicans "have found more ways to play dirty."

"But Democrats should just never be in the business of taking corporate contributions," he said. "It's dancing with the devil. It's a game that we will never win."

When Priorities USA launched, Burton discussed Feingold's disapproval with The Huffington Post, saying, "If the Koch brothers are going to spend $100 million promoting their agenda, we have to do things immediately to stem their influence."

Feingold also called on President Obama to make campaign finance reform and the combating of corporate influence in elections a centerpiece of his own campaign.

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer is set to address the conference Friday Morning.

In May, Feingold sent an email to supporters of his Progressives United PAC, shaming two prominent Democrats -- House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) -- for being too beholden to corporate interests.

He also called out Sens. Mitch McConnell, (R-Ky.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Rep. Darrell Issa, (R-Calif.) for opposing a White House executive order under discussion that would require government contractors to disclose their political donations.

There is a reason Russ lost his Wisconsin Senate Seat....

He is imminently impractical and an unrepentant idealist.

I salute his ideals, but.....

a) The Dems need the money
b) Principled oversight can be set up
c) There are corporations that want to hedge their bets but are afraid to do so publicly.
d) There are corporations that  Read More...

I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE THAT CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM FROM START TO FINISH IS ABSOLUTELY NEEDED. AND THERE MUST BE RULES, CAREFULLY ENFORCED, THAT GOVERN HOW FORMER OFFICE HOLDERS ARE COMPENSATED WHEN THEY RETIRE.

But we are not there now and will not get there unless we win.

Mr. Feingold would seem to favor a highly principled loss to a compromised victory. I know which one I favor.

The Democratic party hasn't had an identity Since the 70's.... They have tried to be all things to all people except the working class.

They have taxed and regulated millions out of jobs... (small business)

Regulated US oil companies, and made us dependant on foriegn oil.

Stripped parents rights(DCFS / CPS)

Made it harder for law abiding citizens to protect themselves from criminal elements(gun control)

NAFTA... need I say more?

Obama just gave, how many Trillion to Corporations, Unions, and Special Interest Groups?

They fight for the rights of criminals, untill one the criminal activity hits one of their own.

You won't hear about Homosexual rights until campaigning starts.

They already have 2 failed health care plans... now they want to start a 3rd which will cost more than the 1st 2.

They only play on people's emotions... there's no substance or common sense to their policies.

"I feel your pain"

They lied about WMD, and where it went. They are making deals with terrorists, and millitant islamic groups.

They are giving Billions to orther countries, while the working class is struggling more by the week.

The list goes on... No they don't have an Identity. If you research it, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Finegold is right. It is the difference between an alternitive vision or simply a compromise. I'm not deluding myself with visions of sugarplums-- a real progressive in the White House or anywhere else would still be fighting an archaic political system and corporate Republicans. There would not be any change. The difference would come in the form of beginning a discussion with the American people about what is wrong and how to make it right.

There's a huge problem with the two party system.

It allows for their to be only one de-facto political party:

The Business Party- with Democrats and Republicans effectively constituting competing factions of the same party.

"Competing" isn't really an accurate term. They antagonize each other for political gain at our cost.

We have had party politics and money influence since the days right after G Washington. All other nations have the same. We are jousting with windmills. Use the system - that is what the GOPers are doing. Some say we do not need career politicians. Do we then want amateur politicians who do not know their donkey from a hole in the ground? Would not such pols be subject to even more influence peddling? Some of the ones we send to Washington now stunk when they were running for office the first time and yet they were elected. We have a weak electorate in too many places. Notice how the GOPers do not mind weakening the schools? Wonder what they are up to now? Does the term permanent majority ring a bell?

Russ is either WAY too positive or he doesn't have complete command of the English language. . . . The Democratic party isn't LOSING its identity, it's LOST its identity.
04:23 PM on 06/17/2011
I'm afraid Feingold is a little late. The corporations have been purchasing Democratic Congressmen and Senators for quite some time now. Nothing short of a new American revolution will turn things around. Since that probably won't happen, the fix is in for us all.
04:20 PM on 06/17/2011
You go Feingold. If Republicans can go for a super PAC, so can we. Two can play that game. I have been trying to log into that website to donate but had some problems. I gotta try the site again. Feingold rocks !!!!!!!!!!

Sen. Feingold is AGAINST the corrupt corporatism the Dems apparently think they've _only just_ embraced (they could do with a reality check).

Reality check. . . . you've listened to too many right wing loons . . . the Dems are starting to be controlled by the corporations (like the Republicans already are). Which makes them the OPPOSITE of socialist but corporatist, or fascist. Wake up! All of Washington is run by corporate lobbyists . . .the lobbyists even write the legislation. That is corporatist.
All those terms like socialist, communist, fascist aren't just mean names you call people, but they are words that have actual meanings. . . . And DC is run by corporate lobbyists.

It's not just the Dems in the U.S., but the Social Democrats in Germany, "New Labor" in Britain, etc. Maybe it's the belated trauma of the 1960s that made leaders from that generation decide to make up with the conservative forces again and offer "neoliberalism light" instead of real socialist alternatives.

C'mon, get real. The so called Democratic Party has already lost its identity, unless you count being a "new Republican Party, though slightly less sociopathic than the current Republican Party an appropriate identity.

The Democrats became anti-american lying backstabbers back in the 70's with Jimmy Carter.

We didn't have an oil shortage... He is the one that started selling us out to foriegn oil. Most of you don't know, becasue you aren't old enough, or refuse to do you research and listen to the biased media.

WE JUST HAVE ONE WELL BLOWING MILLIONS OF BARRELS OF OIL (PER DAY) INTO THE GULF. WE HAVE MORE OIL IN 4 WESTERN STARTS THAN ALL OF SAUDI. WE NEED TO ALLOW US COMPANIES TO DRILL AND PUMP OUR OWN OIL, AND TELL THE PRES TO SCRATCH, AND NOT REQUIRE THEM TO PUT IT ON THE GLOBAL MARKET.

WE HAVE POIL SEEPING OUT OF THE GROUND IN AREAS, THAT OUR PRESIDENT AND HIS PARTY WILL NOT ALLOW TO BE TOUCHED... BUT HE'LL LEASE LAND AND LET FORIEGN COMPANIES DRILL AND PUMP OIL??? WHAT IS THAT???

WAKE UP PEOPLE... YOU ARE BEING PLAYED FOR FOOLS

There is no problem between supply and demand in oil. Oil production is up 11% under Obama. Demand is DOWN right now. The problem is with the speculators. The oil company executives and others have said that speculation adds about 40% onto oil prices.
Again, there is no problem with supply/demand driving up prices.
You have to get beyond your bumper sticker slogans and look at the facts. And for your own sake and that of your family and friends. . . lose the hate. It is bad for your health.
04:40 PM on 06/17/2011
The fact is the US has all the natural resources...oil, natural gas, coal....to supply our country for many years to come and Obama fails to put our people to work by opening up drilling around the country. The permits are always denied, and his people run the agency.
05:11 PM on 06/17/2011
Nonsense.

There is nothing in the states that can begin to compare with the Saudi oil. The only proven large reserves in the US are extremely energy intensive. Consuming three barrels to produce four stopped making sense around the time we realized our CO2 emissions were a major problem.

The democrats need to stop being so nice, get their platform out there and stop giving one thing to the GOP/TPer's . The right have made enough fodder for the Dems to show the whole nation exactly what they are doing to take down the middle class and we should keep pounding it into the heads of the people that the right will do whatever it takes to get rid of Obama. Them and their rich buddies want to destroy the middle class and take over the country. Make a chart and list all the accomplishments Obama has made and then list all the bills that the right has prevented from passing which would have created jobs and other good things for the people. It's time to fight fire with fire as our future depends on it. Let's Get Tough.

If you step back and look at how things have gone . . . the question has to be raised . . are the Dems really the opposition party or are they the Washington Generals playing the Globe Trotters? That is, they make it look like a real game but the outcome is predetermined . . .things will be decided for the corporations and against the people and it will be made to APPEAR as if there is a real fight.

As someone, that because of severe limitations in walking, I have watched the government at work and if you watch the house and senate you would have no problem deciding who the opposition party is and how much they block good legislation. Example the Economic Development Act. Proven to create thousands of jobs but held up by the GOP even though they voted unanimously for it several years ago. There is your answer.

CEOs wasn't the best word. Rich by any measurement, like someone who inherited their money or for what ever reason is a wealthy person not in need of tax cuts.

He lost his seat because he is out of touch. Everyone knows our country and states are deeply in debt and the Republicans are the only ones offering up suggestions how to get out of this mess. His people were tired of his inaction.

If Mr. Feingold wants to help start a nationwide, grassroots, Progressive Party that does not take corporate campaign contributions as a matter of principle and integrity, I will join him. However, I won't hold my breath for that happening.
