'Well Educated Person' Thrown Off Metro North Train (VIDEO)

Metro North Fight

We here in New York have become all but anesthetized to fights on the subway. But this is new -- a scuffle on Metro North! A slight variation, yes, but this one is far more obnoxious than a few thrown fists.

A woman is being confronted by a Metro North employee for being too loud, and cursing. But the woman's first very logical and not at all snobby response is this: "Excuse me? Do you know what schools I've been to and how well educated I am?"

The fight escalates from there, and finally, after some physical contact, the woman is told to get off the train. "I'm not a crazy person. I AM A VERY WELL EDUCATED PERSON."

Watch this video to see more (it gets worse). Or, as Daily Intel's Dan Amira says, "get ready to throw up."

Editor's note: the original video was removed from Youtube. To see the video head over to Gawker.

Has she forgot who has the authority of the train, her or the Conductor and AC. My bets go with the Conductor and AC

Just saw this yesterday, so kinda late to post a response. But Hermon Raju's case has me baffled frankly.
The amount of vitriol doused on the this girl on the web is plain shocking. I am not defending her rudeness. However I do not agree with amount of hatred piled either.
She has mentioned that she was talking in Hindi, which is when the cop decided that she was cursing and to ask her to get out. (Raju feels she was racially profiled) There is no evidence of the girl swearing.

The cop goes on to further justify that she is a crazy person, reiterating she needs to get off the train. That is when this chick goes "(No I am not crazy), I am a very well-educated person" Even in this segment, she demands the cop to identify the curse words and the cop just said 'she was dropping f-bombs'. Even with her high-pitched arguing, not once does this girl swear at the cop.

Did she handle it badly? Yes. Pompous, maybe, but maybe she was also just trying to just establish her sanity? And maybe she is outraged that someone called her crazy in public.

Was the cop cool, or just smug that justified or not, this chick would be thrown off after getting insulted in public? Power does bring smugness, no? Look at our political landscape.

People in glass houses and all...

Oh, please. How many times did she say she was well educated? She deserves to be ripped ten times harder than she has been. And I see she got fired as well. I'm shedding no tears.

On top of it, I got to see some of her powerpoint presentations while she was at Estee Lauder. What a joke. She may claim to be well educated, but she's a joke.

Has anyone else noticed that this video is of an argument that was already in progress? There is no video of the incident to started all of this. While people may feel that the young woman doesn't need to "curse", they may even think it's ridiculous that she keeps saying how educated she is, we don't see what the employee did to instigate this level of intense anger from the woman.

We're judging her without having all the knowledge of the incident itself. Sure you can make your own assumptions of what happened. But those assumptions are only ones you're making to prove what you already want to believe.

Yea I agree. All you really saw there was someone who was trying to engage in an argument and another person who was looking to her boss for relief. The lady was accused of something and seemed to be verbally and loudly defending herself. Then she was considered "irate" which was apparently going to be enough to stop the train, and then finally accused of "touching." The incident apparently ended when the conductor was taken away. It all appeared to be over her using the "F Bomb" which seems to be how most fights start, over words.

As silly as it may seem, "touching" is actually really serious - it can be considered assault. She really shouldn't have reached out to the employee - she's lucky she didn't end up in jail.

Is it just me or does anybody else get annoyed by people being on the phone on public transportation? I mean, sure, pick up the phone and say that you're on the train/bus then you'll call them back. Or maybe it's an emergency, then be my guest.

I was on the bus one time and this girl wouldn't stop talking on the phone about her inane existence. NEWS FLASH: you're not in your living room. There's a reason why this is public transportation. IT'S NOT YOURS ONLY. Have some respect for the other passengers.

"And I am the Queen of Britain! It doesn't matter, Miss. You're on the Metro. We all show common decency here."

This "well educated" individual might want to read a book on how to behave in public. Hang up the phone and stop subjecting all the other passengers to your banal and hardly original language.
11:12 AM on 06/21/2011
we only see a fraction of the video, captured by someone else, posted by someone else, so how is Raju subjecting others to anything? Or are you saying she should not even respond to an attack in her 'banal and hardly original language' Aren't you just displaying your superiority about your 'extremely original ownership' of a global language?

This women has no manners pure and simple, could race play a part possible, could she have mental illness possible. It's also possible she has a run in her pantyhose and is a completely miserable person to begin with. I opt for the latter!

Enough about the Metro North employee. What about the young girl they were trying to throw off the train for saying the f word.
03:16 AM on 07/25/2011
They didn't want to throw her off the train for that - they just asked her not to do it again. It was her response, increased agitation, and finally physical contact with the conductor that got her kicked off the train.

"i am not a crazy person, i am a very well educated person"

that is what the ted Kaczynski said too

It is fascinating that the posters here do not seem to see the 'slightest' aspect of their own behavior in this woman and that is truly sad. Everyone here (I would imagine) believes their own cell phone behavior to be perfectly acceptable. The fact is it is annoying, irritating, and ridiculously immature no matter who is doing the speaking.
Enough is enough. These cell phones should be banned in public places except for 1-2 minute calls and only then in an emergency.

"Racist - (noun) - a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others."

American society now celebrates the "street" culture. Today's youth are taught that the lack of education and verbal skills are the road to success. Today's youth of any color have idealized the pronunciation of the word "asked" to be pronounced "axt". This is not a racial difference that forces her to pronounce the word as "axt". It is her own choice to do so. Just as it was her choice to get a bad weave. It was her choice to get a blonde weave.

Person's of every race have the ability to speak "asked" correctly. It is not "racist" to point out her choice to say "axt" instead of "asked".

I certainly don't believe my race is "superior" to any other race. I also don't believe that any race has the right to "rule others."

There is nothing racist in my comment. There is nothing racist in pointing out bad hair fashion choices. There is nothing racist in pointing out a person's choice to miss pronounce words.

Just because the woman is black doesn't mean I can't mock her fashion choices or inability to speak articulately. Stop playing the race card Johnny Cochran.

And I would also not claim that you would be making a racist comment if you pointed out that I wrote "miss pronounce" instead of "mispronounce". I would laugh at your joke.
(But not as hard as I am laughing at myself right now.)

I went to some of these schools with some of these well-educated people. I couldn't tolerate them then, either.

As someone who rode the MTA for years, this is not a rare sight. SOOO many people are loud and obnoxious on it, it's absurd. FAR worse than the subway - and these are the supposed "professionals."

I've seen way worse. But she's typical.

Obviously she did not get EDUCATED at Mrs. Porters or anywhere. She is an embarrassment to the erudite community; and clearly off her meds. Education is treating another person with dignity and respect. She sounds more like an inbred ingrate.

Educated people don't need to state it repetitively...

"Education is treating another person with dignity and respect" Exception to the rule: calling a complete stranger an inbred and ingrate (based on what exactly?)

I read that after the altercation, the conductor came on the loudspeaker and reminded people to keep conversations quiet, "especially those people who went to Harvard or Yale or are from Westport." .......that was awesome!
12:52 AM on 06/21/2011
Indeed Danish, that conductor is AWESOME! I will look for her the next time I ride that train :)
