Jerusalem Festival Of Lights 2011: Contested Old City Becomes Stunning Art Display (PHOTOS)

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/17/11 12:43 PM ET   Updated: 08/17/11 06:12 AM ET

JERUSALEM (AP) — When night falls on the Old City of Jerusalem this week, the walled enclave sheds its role as one of the world's most contested pieces of real estate to become a luminous carnival of art installations and performances. (Scroll down for photos)

Jerusalem's Festival of Lights, now in its third year, illuminates an area known more for religious friction and clashing political claims than for art or nightlife. Most nights, the Old City's stone alleyways are dimly lit, peopled mainly by small numbers of tourists, Palestinian merchants and children, and ultra-Orthodox Jews headed to or from religious studies or prayers.

But for seven nights, until June 22, a shining 10-foot-tall (3-meter-tall) puppet named Meir — Hebrew for "the illuminator" — entertains visitors with antics like trying to scale the wall of the moat at the Tower of David, used by conquerors across the millennia as a fortress, barracks and gun emplacement.

Dozens of neon bars hanging from a 36-foot-high (11-meter-high) willow tree made of wire, and great dandelions of wire and light, light up the walls at Jaffa Gate, the portal of sand-colored hewn stone blocks that is one of the eight gates in the Old City walls. Magical creatures are projected on to the newly renovated facade of another entrance, Damascus Gate.

Alice Honig, 25, from Ontario, Canada, said the lights of the festival have allowed her to see things that ordinarily would have escaped her notice.

"During the day it's so hot and noisy you miss small things, because you wouldn't stop and look," she said. "It opens people's eyes to things that you would walk by otherwise."

In what some might interpret as a commentary on Jerusalem, one performance has acrobats suspended on the Old City walls enacting a war between two ancient civilizations to control light.

It's not clear who represents light and who represents darkness: That's left for the viewer to decide.

The festival is an outgrowth of Mayor Nir Barkat's aim to turn the city into a world-class tourist destination, while portraying Jerusalem — holy to three religions and fiercely contested by Palestinians and Israelis — as an ordinary municipality with garbage strikes, movie theaters, zoning issues and street festivals.

But the Old City resists that mundane vision. Distrust, violence and conflicting claims of sovereignty over the eastern sector of Jerusalem, where the walled city lies, make it one of the hotspots of the Mideast conflict. The Old City is home to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, one of the holiest sites in Christianity, as well as to the sensitive compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

The festival's artistic director and founder, Eduardo Hubscher, an Argentine-born Israeli, says the festival tries to steer clear of political messages. He calls it a collaborative effort by Christians, Jews and Muslims, mounted in parts of the Old City revered by all three religions.

The festival's overarching aim is to bring people to old Jerusalem after hours, and to create a new venue for tourism, Hubscher said.

"It's safe at night and it's a different place — there is a romantic part here," he said.

Allan Gale, 59, a visitor from Detroit, agreed.

"This is a great idea because it brings people to the Old City at night. Instead of avoiding it because of fear, you are attracted to it to enjoy the art," he said.

Nice

Much better than back before the Arabs states attacked Israel. During that time Jordanian troops and "palestinians" took constant shots at the Jews on the other side of the divided city. Unity of the city is much nicer. All faiths can enjoy a united city.

Yes, let's comment about the lights and forget the ethnic cleansing, apartheid and murder the Israelis do every day. Oops I forgot we're not allowed to comment about Israel lest we be labelled Anti Semitic. They are only defending them selves from Palestinian women and children who have the audacity to want to live. It is irrelevant that Jew's lives in Israel a thousand years ago.

If American Indians started murdering and torturing the current occupants of any major american city, it would be unacceptable and I don't think Modern americans would take it sitting down as many ignorant people think the Palestinians should do. Jews have a right to live and so do Palestinians. No one has a right to Murder innocents of the other party.

You also forgot the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Jerusalem in 1948.

how convenient...

Past wrongs do not justify making immoral and disgusting acts today. The people are different and the times are different. By your logic is it okay to go on a killing spree in Germany today because of what they did in WWII? How about we americans go attack the british because of the wars we had back in the 1700's? How about the christians attack the Jews for killing Jesus!!! would that be right?

Israel's behavior is disgusting and can not be justified by anything. No murder can. I didn't forget to include anything. What happened 60 years ago by people who are now dead is irrelevant. Don't try to justify the murder of innocent people by any means, that in itself is disgusting.

This story is about Jerusalem. Since Israeli liberation of Jerusalem, the Arab population of Jerusalem has increased from 68,600 in 1967 to 244,800 in 2007 (a rise of 257 percent). You must have a different definition of "ethnic cleansing" than the rest of the world.

How is it apartheid to lock up those who call for your destruction and attack you every chance they get? As for Iran, there are few more repressive regimes in the world. They have oppressed their own people, mur dering them in the streets if they protest. The governments in Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, etc. have done much worse to their own people than anything Israel has ever done to the pales, but I don't hear a word about it on here. Thats right, its only upsetting and wrong if Israel is involved. You Israelis bashers are a bunch of hypocrites.

"How is it apartheid to lock up those who call for your destruction"

A silly question. When 'the people calling for your destruction were those whom you ethically cleansed from their homes' which you then stole.

Great celebration of free Israeli people now able to enjoy their freedom after throwing out Jordanian Iraqi and Syrian invaders, and their PLO collaborators out of Jerusalem.

regular every-day lighting of the Khajoo Bridge over Zayand in Iran is 10000x more stunning. http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-19850116/stock-photo-khajoo-bridge-over-zayandeh-river-at-dusk-with-lights-isfahan-iran.html

It's funny how the press acclaims these type of achievements as stunning and pays not attention to the country they're currently demonizing for an attempt at Israeli hegemony.

The same rationale applies to Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer and cannibalist. All he does is stained by his victims' blood.

Israel is the world's pariah. I would not marvel at their festivities just like I had no smile to show over the released pictures of a Nazi Christmas.

Jews have been living in so caIled "lsraeI" or "stoIen Palestine" since before the religion of Is lam was founded. So your statement is definitely incorrect.

The Associated Press wrote this story. Well AP, I wasn't aware that Nir Barkat was the "Mayor of Jerusalem." Actually, international law does not recognize Israel's unilateral attempted annexation of East Jerusalem after Israel attacked its neighbors in June 1967 and directed its most powerful military attack (and took the most casualties) in taking East Jerusalem from Jordan. Barkat and Israel have no legal jurisdictional claim over East Jerusalem. Nir Barkat is mayor of predominately Jewish West Jerusalem. Period.

I love light shows and Jerusalem is particularly appropriate because, as one person interviewed in the article pointed out, it can be just too damned hot in the middle of the day.
The organizers said they were trying to keep in non-political so I think we should take them at their word. It's not that I don't have opinions on Middle-Eastern politics, but I'll argue them in different threads.
This is about a totally positive artistic project. Don't see enough here to grade it on quality, but I'll give it an A for good intent.

there is a pic in the slideshow that has cats in it... it's an odd thing, there are thousands of feral cats in Jerusalem, I don't know why and I don't know how they got there...but there are cats everywhere in Jerusalem.

Cats all over Rome too. The old Italian ladies go out and feed them.
Oh, and I do that too around here.

It must be a Med/Mideast thing. First time I was in the region was 1986 when I was in Soviet Baku. Stray cats everywhere!
09:21 PM on 06/19/2011
When I was visiting the Old City I saw two cats mating in broad daylight in the middle of the street.  A woman who lives nearby told me they never do that in front of people, she said it was really strange.
