Joe Scarborough Goes Off On Newt Gingrich (VIDEO)

Morning Joe

First Posted: 06/17/11 04:55 PM ET Updated: 08/17/11 06:12 AM ET

Joe Scarborough let loose on Newt Gingrich during Friday's "Morning Joe."

Scarborough was eating a bun of some kind when Mika Brzezinski played a clip of Gingrich saying in a speech that President Obama favored "the opposite of freedom." This was too much for him, and, with food still in his mouth, he went on a sarcastic rant about Gingrich.

"It's not the opposite of freedom," he said. "If you're scoring at home, kids, Barack Obama and his sort of mushy progressive but moderate, extending the Bush tax cuts and tripling the number of troops in Afghanistan, that is not left-wing Marxism or socialism. That is not the opposite of freedom. The opposite of freedom would be, oh, I don't know, Gaddafi."

Brzezinski let out a shriek of laughter. "Ok, you can finish your morning bun now," she told Scarborough, who wasn't done.

"Why can't you just say I disagree with his viewpoints?" he shouted. "Instead of bringing up Stalin and Hitler ... why does he keep saying stupid things like that?!"

It's not the first time Gingrich has riled Scarborough up. The MSNBC host lost it over Gingrich's awkward encounter with an Iowa voter in May, and condemned his stance on the proposed Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero.

Why is Morning Joe using that silly percussion sound to segue from a live picture to a taped segment, even one that deals with a serious subject? This is a morning talk and news program, not a Saturday morning cartoon.

These people discuss politics like a small group of teenagers. They constantly want to talk about
schoolyard issues. Banter on issues that have little substance to real political importance.

I can't believe I actually agree with Joe and the former head of the GOP! Wow, the end must be near.

You are correct. It's scary when a righty says something reasonable these days; the shock is palpable and I always try to give a little Hail Mary, full of grace, to the soul of Barry Goldwater in thanks.

How I long for the days when both sides drank heavily together at night, twisted each others arms in the daylight and actually managed to get some things done.

And suddenly Joe's horrified? Republicans routinely and in every session of congress make war against the Democrats, women, the poor, the middle class, the nonwhite. Where was Joe on every other occasion that this sort of hyperbole occurred? How does Joe justify being a part of a political party that is so wrought on tearing this nation apart?

The way the ideological turf has been carved up today, I don't think we're right-wingers or extreme.  I think we are mainstream.  I think we are in the middle of common sense.

You still haven't said a thing, and I still have no clue where you stand.

Within current day main-stream, left and right divisions, Richard Nixon would be slightly to the left of Dennis Kucinich, but certainly left of the current democratic main stream.

Really?

The majority of Americans disagreed with the GOP positions on abortion, marriage equality, Medicare . . . .

So how are you "mainstream?"

Joe who?

I respect Scarboroughs loathing of Newt.

If it was just Gingrich saying stupid things, that's one thing, but it's the whole freaking Republican party that sustains itself on this type of hyperbolic rhetoric.

To the GOP everything to the left of the Christian Co-alition is Marxist.

It's embarassing to watch them on tv. I mean... Newt is a author, he write books on politics.. he KNOWS Obama isn't a commie, or a nazi or a nazicommie but he's willing to debase himself and lie because his audience would rather just trust him then open up a text book.

I never thought I'd see the day when I agreed with Joe Scarborough, but his rant about Gingrich was 100% on the money.

I cannot stand Scarborough! If he is truly so outraged about what Newt says why doesn't he yell at every Republican that says the same thing. He is just jumping on the repub talking points ban wagon. For the life of me I cannot understand why anybody watches this morning news show, these guys are no better than the morning Fox show. The first time I saw them I thought I had tuned in the wrong channel.

What you are seeing is Joe Scarborough, the mainstream Republican getting sick and fed up - like the rest of us - of the Tea Party and the outlandish rhetoric.

I don't agree with a lot of what Joe says and he is sometimes overbearing, but at least he's not a robot.
