El Paso reportedly has one of the lowest crime rates in the United States. Yet Ciudad Juarez, known among some as the "Murder Capital of the World," lies just a few meters away, across the Mexican border.

To kick off the new season of its "Fault Lines" current affairs show, Al-Jazeera takes an in-depth look at Mexico's ongoing drug war -- specifically the violence in Ciudad Juarez. More than 8,000 people have been killed in this once-booming border city since 2008, the year that Mexican President Felipe Calderon vowed to crack down on the drug cartels.
