Sega Pass Hacked, User Information Compromised

Another video game company has been hacked. This time, it's Sega.

The company's Sega Pass system, which distributes free content like demos to users, was taken offline on Thursday. According to the email sent to users, reprinted by PlayStation Lifestyle, "unauthorized" entry was discovered on the database. No payment information has been compromised.

Sony wrote that some users' email addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were taken. Payment details are safe, however, as Sega uses external payment providers. Sega advised that users should change passwords for other sites they may have used the same login information for, and to beware emails asking for personal information.

"We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers’ data and isolate the location of the breach," Sega wrote. "We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems."

While some have speculated that LulzSec, which claimed responsibility for hacks of Sony and the CIA's website, is responsible for this latest attack, the group denied involvement. "@Sega - contact us. We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down," it wrote on its Twitter.

Some of these comments are priceless! But not so much as the information that's being captured. What a disaster. Thankfully some companies are still keeping their subscribers and customers safe!

I have an idea, it's called the HACK a day calendar. Already for the month of June, we have Sony, Citi, The CIA now to begin this week off SEGA /playstation. This way, we all can remove are vital information before the infiltrtion and then re enter -- think of it as a public service. Cripes if the corporations aren't going to protect our financial info we should be able to protect are vitals individually.

Dear Hackers who ever you might be:

I am in need of some spending cash, happily I promise to spend it, put it back into the economy to stimulate the malls and little shoppes. I am a great person, caring and compassionate, I would be very generous to those in need. If you happen to break into a bank, brother could you spare a dime. Oh Greece is poor too, Thank you!

Hey what do you expect when you outsource your operations to a 3d world country for pennies? Some of the best and brightest IT nerds are here in the US, unfortunately these cheap O companies don't want to hire them to secure the network and monitor the system of data bases. If this a breech, how many times have the hackers been in and how long have they been doing it. There are back doors to everything. Bottoms UP Jack Daniels

The sad reality is, most large system operators, financial data operations speand relatively little on security and many do not take it at all seriously, especially now..as no one is suprised. Behind closed doors, they do not really care..

Maybe LulzSec wasn't responsible for this latest hack. But they have inspired other hackers to put their skills to the test. I think ideally, the message these hackers are trying to send is that we are trusting and relying on many of these companies, yet they can not provide the means of security that they claim to have. This includes our very on financial system. Maybe I am reaching. But it should exemplify our standard of security any how.
11:31 PM on 06/18/2011
You bet it should, we need to get it off the grid. It can be done, what do the Women in action folks do? More CEO, owners, etc good go for it.....

Exactly. Banks don't want you to know how much they lose to hacking. Think about all the other systems that are vital, national security, electricity.

I have said it a thousand times, until congress passes a law that delivers serious financial penalties for companies that do not properly invest in security, this will not stop. These companies have no responsibility for the identity theft that is the result of this information being stolen, and the banks do not care. They will just go after the victim.
11:32 PM on 06/18/2011
OH yes lets have more laws and regulation to increase the cost. I have an easier way, dont like it dont use it...you know technology
