Study: Do Women Want Rich Men?

Guy W Car

That guy smiling from behind the wheel of his shiny Porsche may indeed be trying to impress a woman with it, but he's probably only interested in a fling, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Researchers found that in much the way a peacock flashes his feathers to attract a mate, some men use conspicuous spending to attract women: The catch is that the guys doing the big spending to bait women are supposedly only looking for a short-term relationship.

How money plays into sex, dating and marriage is an often-studied topic. A report by Dr. Catherine Hakim released in January showed that women are choosing richer husbands, or "marrying up" more today than they did in the 1940s. And a controversial 2009 study found that while several factors affected a woman's reported enjoyment of sex, the most influential was her partner's income.

So a guy can grab a woman's attention with shiny, expensive objects? Yes, it seems, but the new study also suggests that he won't try to hold it for long. A woman might choose the guy with a Porsche for a date, but she doesn't necessarily view him as a better marriage partner than a guy driving a Honda Civic.

"When women considered him for a long-term relationship, owning the sports car held no advantage relative to owning an economy car," explained Daniel Beal, an assistant professor of psychology at Rice and a member of the research team. "People may feel that owning flashy things makes them more attractive as a relationship partner, but in truth, many men might be sending women the wrong message."

The women in the study took the flashy car to mean the man was looking for uncommitted sex.

Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist at Rutgers University who has studied romantic love extensively, said studies have widely shown that women like men with resources: They have since the beginning of time because they need someone to help take care of their young.

Men with lots of fancy cars who live in the right part of town are sending an evolutionary message that they can provide. And while this study showed that the conspicuous spenders didn't have a long-term advantage, Fisher argued they weren't at a disadvantage either.

"The bottom line is when you take a look around the world, women -- if they can win over the Porsche guy -- they'd rather have the Porsche guy," Fisher said.

Just because women know the conspicuous spender is primarily looking for a fling, that doesn't mean they won't try to turn that fling into something more.

"They want the resources, so they'll think 'Maybe I can love him in the way that makes him stay long-term,'" Fisher explained.

A study Fisher helped conduct with Match.com found that a third of respondents reported having a one-night stand that turned into a long-term relationship. With those numbers in mind, he posited that women might take a chance on the Porsche guy. Just like men, women have dating strategies, and in this instance, the pay-off would be big.

"He had to really work to get that Porsche, and that's his bait, and she sees the bait," Fisher said. "She reels him in, and he thinks it's short term. She has sex with him, and he falls for her. Now her babies can ride around in a Porsche."

So...men with expensive cars just want uncommitted sex. Women who see these flashy cars know they just want uncommitted sex. However, the women who see these flashy cars have sex with these men anyway hoping that they can convert them into long-term relationships because the men with expensive cars aren't at an evolutionary disadvantage and there's a 33% chance from dating sites that they can land a rich guy.

Wow, this is really calculating and kind of fascinating...

No.

JUNE 18 (HealthDay News) — Men who drive Porsches or flaunt other flashy possessions are usually not the "marrying kind," a new study suggests.

Researchers from Rice University, University of Texas-San Antonio and University of Minnesota found that conspicuous spending by men is often driven by the desire to have uncommitted romantic flings . . . . although flashy spending may get a woman's attention, she won't be picking out china patterns any time soon.

In analyzing more than 1,000 men, researchers revealed that being in possession of a Porsche . . . did make a man more desirable to women than owning a non-luxury item, such as a Honda Civic. The attraction however, ended there. [Women] did not find him more desirable as a marriage partner for a long-term committed relationship.

Researchers found that women inferred from men's flashy spending that they were only interested in uncommitted sex.

"When women considered him for a long-term relationship, owning the sports car held no advantage relative to owning an economy car," study co-author Daniel Beal, an assistant professor of psychology at Rice University, said. "People may feel that owning flashy things makes them more attractive as a relationship partner, but in truth, many men might be sending women the wrong message."

Do women seek out rich men? This would certainly help to account for the popularity of Italian PM Silvio Berlusconii and Hugh Hefner among some women.

That being said, all generalizations are bunk, including this one. I believe Sam Clemens said that.

Oh, dear... sooo bass ackwards. This is right up there with Freud deciding women had p3nis envy. Women didn't want p3nises... they wanted what that organ entitled it's owner to... independence, respect, self-determination, etc... In the same way, women don't necessarily want a "rich man". They want to BE RICH! (i.e. financially secure) because in this culture, when you are rich, you can be.... Independent, respected, self-determining, etc...

Historically, since women have been denied direct access to wealth, that financial security was transferred from a man. There are many women still operating in that mind-set (either by necessity or due to culturization). However, a woman who trades sex for money ultimately further degrades women in the eyes of men... as evidenced by some of the male posters on this thread.

So, ladies, make your own way. Help each other out. Band together and support each other. Teach your daughters to be responsible people in their own right. Then, inane articles that only serve to feed ignorant stereotypes like this one will be obsolete!

My generation called it "security".

I didn't buy into that, because I was quite capable of taking care of myself. I did know women who trolled for buys with money, and the stories they told me about the experience were quite a cautionary tale. Yes, some women care more about money, than anything. They are delusional however. Men with means always regard themselves as "great catches", even when they emit emotional, or spiritual "bad breath".

The affluent always assume people are after their boodle. There is also a suggestion that since they ARE rich, they can buy or sell anything.

Marriage is hard enough, without a spouse constantly obsessing about "their" money...so give me the poor, decent guy every time.

Life is too short to have to wake up every morning to someone I can't stand just because he has money .... I would rather be alone

Financial security does not necessarily mean rich. It's just nice to go to sleep at night knowing the bills are paid, and there is a few extra bucks in the bank that can be enjoyed without the fear of losing everything. financial stress can kill even the stongest of relationships.

Very true! Financial difficulties are often listed as being the number one stressor prior to divorce.

The photo is an Audi, not a Porsche. That and all Porsche models (excepting the Cayenne SUV) are 2 seaters, and there won't be any babies riding in them. Mostly because she'll make him sell them the minute they're married.

Women only care about a man's spiritual wealth. Money means nothing to a woman.

Hey, you got men's honest message. Now if women could only be honest about their true interests....

There are people who are rich and there are those who pretend, I say be safe and stay away from both.

"Money isn't important," is womanese for, "The reason I brought up money, is because it is important."

More womanese:

"It's getting late," is womanese for, "It isn't bedtime."

"I love you," is womanese for, "Now you say it."

Shame on you Mike! I'm sorry if that's been your experience, but these comments are like saying that if a women says no to sex, she really means yes. And we know what THAT kind of thinking leads to.

Seems to me you may be missing out on some really good women, by putting you own spin on things, rather than really listening to them and taking them at their word. Why not trust the process and see if their actions back up those words? They'll show their true colors sooner than later. Who knows? You might just find a bird who sings a tune you like, instead of that mockingbird you're keeping your ear peeled for.

Aurora, I doubt if you date women, but trust me, learning womanese is very helpful to dating sanity and sanity in general. If you ask her for a date and she says anything other than an unqualified and unconditional "Yes" you have almost certainly just heard womanese for "No." Been there. Knowing womanese helps you listen carefully, pay attention, and read female nuance. If you stop beating your head against a wall, your head stops hurting. Knowing womanese, I longer have a need for aspirin.

I don't know what "process" and words you're talking about. As for showing her true colors "sooner rather than later" why not show her true colors upfront? Is she hiding something? Like pirates of old will she heave to, strike her colors, and then run up the Jolly Roger!?

Argghh mateys! We're headed for Davey Jones locker with these she-devils!
