Homeless Man Max Melitzer Learns He's Rich

Max Melitzer

SALT LAKE CITY -- A private investigator says he has tracked down a homeless Utah man and delivered some good news: He's inherited a lot of money.

David Lundberg said he found Max Melitzer pushing a shopping cart filled with personal possessions in a Salt Lake City park Saturday afternoon.

Lundberg declined to disclose how much money Melitzer will be receiving, but said the man's brother who died of cancer last year left him a "significant" amount in his will.

"He'll no longer be living on the street or in abandoned storage sheds," he told The Associated Press. "He'll be able to have a normal life, and be able to have a home, provide for himself, and purchase clothing, food and health care."

The story about Lundberg's two-month search for Lundberg has been reported by the Deseret News and KSL of Salt Lake City.

Lundberg said he was hired by the family's New York law firm to locate Melitzer, and some family members plan to meet Melitzer next week in Salt Lake City. He declined to identify them.

Melitzer's family wishes to remain private, and lawyers are deferring questions to Lundberg.

The investigator said he broke the news to Melitzer while they were sitting on a bench at Pioneer Park. While Lundberg said he didn't tell Melitzer how much money he was inheriting, the man was excited.

"He's still in shock. This came out of nowhere," Lundberg said. "He's a really mellow guy in his 60s, very sweet and more articulate than I thought for a man in his position."

Melitzer has been homeless for years and last had mail correspondence with his family in September. But when family members gave him a number to phone, he never called.

Don Hill, house manager at the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, told Lundberg on Friday that he had seen Melitzer near the facility two days earlier.

Hill said he has known the homeless man for four years, and Melitzer stayed at places like the Rescue Mission when he's not roaming between Salt Lake City and Ogden.

"During the summer, I'd imagine, once in a while he'll stay out nights – outside," Hill told the Deseret News.

Earlier this month, a police officer found Melitzer sleeping in a car in an Ogden salvage yard.

Lundberg said Melitzer was taken Saturday to an undisclosed location in Salt Lake City and doesn't want to talk to the media right now. But Lundberg said he would talk to family members about possibly holding a news conference next week.

The investigator said he found Melitzer with the help of a tip. He received about 60 or 70 such calls after news about his search went out Friday.

"Someone called today (Saturday) and said they saw him at Pioneer Park. I thought it was another crazy tip, but sure enough, there he was," Lundberg said.

I want to see the "after" picture. Maybe I'm interested.
11:37 PM on 06/20/2011
The family left him a phone number for him to call but said he never called ??? What idiots ... how many homeless people have cell phones (forget about finding a pay phone)?
05:16 PM on 06/21/2011
I think if you really had to make a phone call, you could without necessarily owning a cellphone.
11:19 PM on 06/21/2011
That is correct I could make a call without owning a cell phone and perhaps he could have too.

My point was the family was saying he never called them. Since they were apparently well off maybe they don't know the challenges a homeless person faces when it comes to something that is simple for some of us such as making a phone call.

Maybe they could have put out a little more effort and then again maybe he didn't want to contact them.

Actually, 30-45% of homeless people (in Washington D.C. at least) have cell phones. Also, many libraries have courtesy phones, plus there actually are still pay phones. Yes, his family could have made it easier on him, but it seems to me that if he was really interested in contacting them he would have found a way.

Wow. Very happy story. Reminds me of uhh...who's the homeless guy with the great radio voice? Hope he's not on drugs or alcohol because if he is then it's only a matter of time before he's back in the streets again---unless, or course, he's inheriting a billion or something.

In other news, millions of people with homes have learned they are poor..

Hopefully, it will be put in some kind of trust for him to insure his living expenses and other monthly bills are covered without him squandering it all in one fell swoop.

If he is smart he will donate it all to a politician and he will double his money.
04:53 PM on 06/22/2011
Yes, and only the top 1% will double their money with the support of lobbyists and the GOP!

Are the poor people stealing from you again? Boo hoo.
03:07 AM on 06/23/2011
No, it's the military and the DEA that are stealing from him I bet.
04:52 PM on 06/22/2011
If he is the top 1% who work so hard for tax loopholes, he should be taxed. Or, he should give generously to the GOP to lobby for no taxes.

I would not have waited for my death to help MY brother had he been homeless and living on the streets!

Many homeless people won't take help from family. I tried to help my homeless brother throughout his life, but he refused my help.

Why should he have to be responsible for taking care of his brother? If he has some sort of mental illness or health problem, then perhaps, but if he's just an unemployed homeless vagabond then it's not his responsibility to feed him, and house him, and pay for his clothes, and his health care, and whatever else. He is a grown man. It might be okay to throw some money his way every now and then but the man is his grown brother, not his child, and grown people take care of themselves. Not to be callous---since oftentimes homeless people are not necessarily homeless by choice---but that doesn't make his plight someone else's full responsiblity.

I have hesitated long and hard b4 I say this. Am hoping it is positive and relevant. I have been there and done that. Practically homeless (in US would not have survived), & got lucky.

I now live way below my means, free of the nasty bullies I was subject to b4. That is my one luxury.

Good for you! I'd love to take you out for coffee to hear some of your stories and learn from them.

I just hope that the money facilitates things in this man's life rather than leading to heartache years down the road.

When I heard that the economy was going bust a few years back, I opted not to sign another lease and moved in with my parents. Now I do anything that I can for them. We don't butt heads like we did in years passed. I manage the landscaping which was in disarray and scorned by more than one neighbor. We're working on stepping back the hording, and my father and I are taking our first steps to finish the basement, a goal that seemed as if it would never be reached. Instead of wasting money on rent, I put money into their house. And I have to say that I'm much more content then I used to feel.

The reason for hesitating is i know many are doing it tough & I dont want to rub their noses in my relative good fortune. It hasnt made me happier. Just removed the wolf from my door and the knot in my stomach.

My point mainly was, it can happen to any of us.

The brain is still a huge mystery.

Being too poor makes me unhappier. Being above basic needs doesnt make me happier.

its weird. Outsiders looking in would envy me. i have had a hard but charmed life but .... - the few emotional bummers and mistakes have been big ones, & thats what seems to dominate at the end of the game of life - 4 me anyway ~60.

I am not a blamer by nature, except of my self. The thing which really stumps me is that I chose such a wrong partner, but I cant regret it or get closure cos we had 2 such great kids.

Anyhoo - glad things are cool w/ u folks - life is a circle - u start and end up in nappies. Sounds like a nice part of the phase. When they stop being grouches and mellow.

Coffee thing sounds nice (tho prob talked u out of it anyway), but am here in sydney oz, so doesnt sound a happening thing. I Can call for 2c pm if thats poss (as in exch details) tho. may be fun
