John McCain: Immigrants Caused Arizona Wildfires (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/19/11 11:38 PM ET Updated: 08/19/11 06:12 AM ET

John McCain (R-AZ) says undocumented immigrants are to blame for the massive wildfires that have ravaged Arizona.

"There is substantial evidence that some of these fires are caused by people who have crossed our border illegally," McCain, said at a press conference Saturday after touring the Wallow fire, which began on May 29 and has burned over 500,000 acres to date.

“They have set fires because they signal others, they have set fires to keep warm, and they have set fires in order to divert law enforcement agents and agencies from them,” McCain said. “The answer to that part of the problem is to get a secure border."

McCain did not provide any evidence to support his claim, however.

On Sunday, Tom Berglund, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman, told ABC News that there is no evidence that undocumented immigrants had caused the Wallow fire. "Absolutely not, at this level,” Berglund said. "There's no evidence that I'm aware, no evidence that's been public, indicating such a thing.”

Berglund did say, however, that the cause of the Wallow fire, now the largest wildfire in Arizona history, had been determined to be human -- specifically an “escaped campfire.” Two persons of interest were questioned, but no arrests were made.

Latino groups sharply criticized McCain for his remarks. "With the lack of evidence, he might as well also blame aliens from outer space for the fires,” Angelo Falcon, the president of the National Institute for Latino Policy, told CNN. Randy Parraz, whose organization Citizens for a Better Arizona is trying to recall the state senator who sponsored Arizona's controversial anti-illegal immigration law, called McCain's remarks “careless and reckless.”

"It's easier to fan the flames of intolerance, especially in Arizona," he said.

UPDATE:

On Monday, McCain's office released a statement clarifying the senator's remarks, saying that while he had toured the Wallow fire on Saturday, his comments were referring to blazes in southern Arizona more generally, both now and in years past.

“The facts are clear. For years, federal, state and local officials have stated that smugglers and illegal immigrants have caused fires on our southern border," said Brooke Buchanan, Senator McCain's communications director. "During the press conference on Saturday, Senator McCain was referring to fires on the Arizona/Mexico border, not the Wallow Fire.”

If Roger Clemons can be arrested for lying to Congress..Why is McCain not arrested for lying to press and constituents..Instead of arresting Illegal aliens we should arrest Congress..

"With the lack of evidence, he might as well also blame aliens from outer space for the fires,”...WHAT?????? The last time I looked aliens from outer space weren't trying to sneak across the border into the U.S.A.

I hope you guys will apologize to the old man when he is proven to be correct about this fire.

there is no evidence at all right now for this, and even if he is right (coincidentally), he doesn't deserve an apology for making an unsubstantiated remark to garner Republican voters.

Since the Obama Administration refuses to enforce the border and keep illegal immigrants out, odds are as good as any other reason...perhaps moreso....that illegals DID cause the fire. So....are you now going to write the White House and demand they actually enforce the law..... or say nothing?

This whole thing starts with a statement from Cochise County Sheriff Devers claiming that two anonymous Border Patrol Agents told him that they observed illegals in the park, which was closed, at about the time the fire was first reported. That location being in the United States and may or may not have had anything to do with the fire since there was another fire two days earlier at Parker Canyon Lake not three miles away

Time for him to retire and yell at the kids who walk through the grass (on whichever of his 5 homes he is currently in)

Probably all those illegal aliens who ran those Wall Street banks that tanked our economy in the last decade too, huh Sen. McCain?

No, that would be the guys running this administration as well as the last one.

Funny that a Forest Ranger defends the people that illegally grow acres of marijuana in our national parks, and kill the Rangers that happen to discover their operation

I just love the politically correct stooges, these people are called "undocumented". Hello! they are illegal, threat them as such.

A few people need a wake up call. McCain is not a racist. Some of the bleeding liberals need to check their facts instead of attacking. If you read a few articles concerning the ongoing problems our border patrol is having, you would understand what McCain is talking about.

Have you checked your facts on the known cause of every other fire in this state to understand how ridiculous his comment is?

Even HuffPost is quoting McCain as saying: "There is substantial evidence that some of these fires are caused by people who have crossed our border illegally" and it certainly seems to be supported by the facts. (emphasis added)

"When this fire started, Coronado National Monument was closed," Dever said. "There were no people allowed -- there was no camping, no traveling, no nothing. The forest around it was closed. There was no travel permitted, no hiking, no nothing permitted in there. Whoever started the fire was there illegally. The fire started at the end of the fence where it starts up on the mountain on the U.S.-Mexican border. That is a high-intensity drug and human smuggling area by designation of the federal government, us and everybody else."
http://ktar.com/category/local-news-articles/20110622/Sheriff-says-Monument-fire-likely-started-by-illegals/

The U.S. Forest Service officials said they have determined Monument fires were human-caused (see link above) and it's a fact that the Monument and the forest around it were both closed. The human(s) who caused that were there illegally.
I have plenty of issues with McCain these days, but there's nothing wrong with what he said except that some pro-illegal immigration people reacted as if he claimed ALL the fires were caused by people here illegally and he is not reported to have ever even said that. It's not very honest to attack him for something he did not say.

I just love Uncle John. We Arizonans can always count on him. Our night time temperatures near the border hover around 80-90 degrees this time of year. It's too frosty for those sneaky illegals, though. They gotta build fires to stay warm. Then they gotta build other fires to let their friends and all the Feds know where the big toasty campfire is. Right, Uncle John?
04:10 PM on 06/23/2011
You live in AZ and are denying illegals do these things? This is well documented, like the article states.
