Gabrielle Giffords Reunited With Staff In Tucson, Husband Mark Kelly Says

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A weekend visit home to Tucson that included a reunion with staff members, Father's Day breakfast and Mexican takeout food was good medicine for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she recovers from being shot, her astronaut husband said.

Giffords and Mark Kelly also took a ride Saturday to see familiar downtown sights before an emotional reunion later in the day with her staff, Kelly told the Arizona Daily Star.

The meeting included Ron Barber, who also was injured in the Jan. 8 mass shooting in Tucson that killed six and wounded 13.

On Sunday, the couple and Giffords' family had a Father's Day breakfast of eggs, bagels, fruit salad and leftover Mexican food.

By 11 a.m., they were back in the air headed for Houston, where Giffords will continue rehabilitation therapy as an outpatient.

"After everything she's been through, this was a milestone," Kelly told the newspaper. "It was motivational for her to drive through the district and see some of the people she represents and see how things are."

Giffords knows how many people were killed or injured in the shooting but isn't aware that her staffer, Gabe Zimmerman, and her friend, federal Judge John Roll, were among those who died, Kelly said.

He and others are gradually revealing details about the tragedy to avoid overwhelming her.

During the reunion, Giffords climbed a flight of stairs at the home of one staff member, her spokesman, C.J. Karamargin, told The Associated Press.

"When I was in Houston, I saw her walking on her own, but to see her climb a flight of 18 steps?" he said. "Not a visit has gone by when I haven't seen some clear progress."

Kelly told the Star that Giffords is struggling with her speech, but "as far as what she remembers and comprehends, at times I feel she's 100 percent."

"Her communication skills are getting better every week," he said. "Six months from now we are all going to be amazed at where she is."

Giffords had mixed emotions about her visit.

"She was happy to come back, but at the same time it was only for a weekend," Kelly said.

Giffords wants to visit Tucson as often as possible, Karamargin told the AP.

"Seeing what a positive impact the visit had on her, and how much of a success it was, I think we're going to try to make it happen soon," he said, although he wasn't sure when.

I think it's going to be rough when she learns of Gabe Zimmerman's and the other's passing. I wish her all the best in the world.

lets hope gun-happy republicans leave her alone this time

Given that she had a reunion with her staff members and her memory and comprehension is "at times 100%", wouldn't she be wondering where Gabe Zimmerman is?

She is going to recover in small steps at her own speed. I have a feeling that's not going to be slow. She sustained one of the worst injuries anyone can and still survive. She's amazing.

Inspiring to see a husband be such a cheerleader for his wife -- no doubt she deserves this. But it's refreshing because he has never once in any way discussed how difficult this is for him. I don't know the couple personally but the unselfishness that appears to be at work here is admirable. Classy couple.

With Gabby Giffords, we see what miracles are available in medicine today, and yet, too many of our citizens, do not benefit from this sort of miracle. Our health care system is a Jackpot system: If you have great health care insurance, there is a tremendous possibility of healing, even from very devastating injuries or illnesses. And yet, if you do not have health care insurance....you get initial first aid (that is required by our system--to treat everyone through the ER door), and when you are stable--if ever--you are sent home. It is truly a crapshoot. You have either platinum insurance, or next to nothing.

Which one do you have? Wanna bet your life on it?

I can say with certainty that no-one asked any of the Tucson shooting victims what kind of insurance they had before, during and after they were treated. Those doctors at UMC, and other outlying hospitals treated the victims until they were well. For Gabby, hers is still continuing but so are others as well. While I agree that there are differences in plan coverages, etc., I believe to use this horrible tragedy to imply special treatment is poor judgement and timing.

Yes, every single victim who made it alive to a hospital was treated. If by that you mean stabilized, if possible, so that the would not die from their injuries. HOWEVER, THAT level of treatment is far different than what those of us with good health care gets. Yes, they were not asked about their insurance before they hit the ER; the level of insurance governs their treatment plan.

Those who come into a hospital under Good Samarian laws are NOT entitled to ongoing physical therapy, surgeries that impact quality of life, etc. If they are alive and breathing, the hospital has met its obligation. If they ended up in a wheel chair for life, well, unless they have $hundreds of thousands of dollars, they won't get the state of the art orthopedic surgeries over years that they may ultimately need. They will end up cared for by family, or at some medicaid nursing facility that will feed them and change their bedding, but that's it. If you think our current laws would provide the sorts of medical care that Giffords has been afforded to anyone without insurance who is brought to a hospital by ambulance after a shooting or an auto accident, etc., you are sorely mistaken. Go check out how the Good Samaritan laws really work, It is why universal health insurance coverage is absolutely necessary.
